As scheduled, our annual sport meeting was held last Saturday. We went to the campus to watch the final of the 4×100-meter relay. So extraordinary was the experience that I would never forget.I had never imagined that the atmosphere at a sports event could be so intense. The runners strained to run as fast as they could, while trying not to drop their batons at the change.I was also caught up in the excitement and cheered so hard that I thought my lungs would burst! It was so wonderful to be part of this sporting moment.
[片段1]
I sat alone in my room, thinking deeply. It occurred to me that I had never really considered my options carefully.I decided to reflect on my future, wondering what I should do next.Suddenly, an idea came to me.I imagined a world where I could pursue my passion and make a difference.I realized that I had the power to create change, and I was determined to do so.

Four Best Plants to Give as Gifts
Choosing a gift for someone is always a challenge.Giving plants is one way to try if the recipient is already a plant-lover.Here are some sure to impress as thoughtful gifts.
Jade Plant
The jade plant is a large succulent(肉質(zhì)植物) that makes a perfect gift for someone who's mastered parenting succulents. With a woody stem(莖), it looks like a tree once growing tall enough.Besides occasional watering and a bright window, the jade plant has few other requirements.A good challenge for ambitious owners is to regularly cut off its heavy leaves to reduce weight.
Christmas Cactus
This is a succulent with eye-catching flowers that appear in winter. You might assume it a picky plant, but nothing could be further than the truth. It prefers bright, indirect light and grows well in average potting soil. This plant prefers a steady watering schedule, especially in winter. To encourage more growth, plant it in a hanging container that allows its branches to hang down.
Paperwhite
Some people just aren't interested in keeping houseplants around long-term, and paperwhite flowers are an excellent gift for anyone you know who fits this mould.Paperwhites grow from bulbs (鱗莖) and will produce flowers out of season. The roots need to be kept relatively damp, but once they are blooming(開(kāi)花), there's not much that can go wrong. They can be replanted outside after they have run their course.
Corn Plant
The corn plant is forgiving of variable light conditions and watering routines. It grows slowly, but can reach a height of four to six feet, and can make an impressive floor plant. Its leaves turn paler in direct sunlight to reflect the extra light, and darker green in shady conditions to maximize sunlight absorption.

One morning, Ann's neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog.Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.
Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers(傳單), and put them in mailboxes.Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog.At the time, Ann's son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.
Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her.As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into Jack's room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him, the dog went silent.
“If it hadn't come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.

When it comes to entrepreneurship(企業(yè)家), it seems like a lot of us are fond of the idea of NOT getting more education.Sure, we've all heard how Bill Gates and Steve Jobs dropped out of college to found Microsoft and Apple, respectively.A lot of would-be solopreneurs(獨(dú)立創(chuàng)業(yè)者) think this means they should take the same course, putting education by the wayside to chase their business goals.
Now, I'm not saying that you need a college degree to be a successful entrepreneur. But all too often, people take these famous examples a step too far and decide they don't need to further their education in any way.
The thing is, college isn't the only place you can get an education.Bill Gates and Steve Jobs learned a lot outside their classroom settings to turn their companies into the global successes they are today. When it comes to entrepreneurship, the most successful people are generally the ones who develop a lifelong love of learning. It's an feature worth imitating.
When we think of ‘exercise’, most of us think of sweaty people at the gym running on treadmills and lifting weights. We don't think of hitting the books. But the brain is actually a muscle too.And just like you need those physical workouts so you don't start getting saggy(松馳的) around the middle, you need to give your brain regular “workouts” that keep it active and healthy.
Contrary to popular belief, your brain doesn't stop growing after adolescence. One recent study found that the brain continues to produce new neurons associated with learning, emotion and memory throughout adulthood.Of course, the outcomes of this ongoing development depend in part on your own efforts.
If you're not feeling motivated to work out your brain, it might be helpful to consider the costs of not continuing to learn.Quite simply, the problems you have now—whether in business or other areas of your life—are going to continue to exist if you don't find new ways to approach them. The things you learn will help you discover new solutions and think more creatively. When done right, training your brain can become a lifelong habit—just like going for a morning run or hitting the gym at the end of the work day.

Bottlenose dolphin moms adapt their individually special whistles(口哨) when their babies are nearby. This “parentese” might increase attention, bonding(聯(lián)系) and vocal learning in babies, as it seems to do in humans.
During the first few months of life, each common bottlenose dolphin develops a unique tune, or signature whistle, similar to a name. The dolphins shout out their own “names” in the water “l(fā)ikely as a way to keep track of each other,” says marine biologist Laela Sayigh. But dolphin moms seem to adjust that tune in the presence of their babies, which tends to stick by mom's side for three to six years.
Sayigh and her colleagues analyzed signature whistles from 19 female dolphins both with and without their babies close by.Audio recordings were got from a wild population that lives near Sarasota Bay, Fla., during catch-and-release health assessments that occurred from 1984 to 2018.The researchers examined 40 examples of each dolphin's signature whistle, confirmed by the unique way each vocalization's frequencies change over time.Half of each dolphin's whistles were voiced in the presence of her baby. When youngsters were around, the moms' whistles contained, on average, a higher maximum and slightly lower minimum pitch(音高) compared with those voiced in the absence of babies, contributing to an overall widened pitch range.
These whistle adjustments echo baby talk because human caregivers use real words and language, just with certain inflections(變調(diào)), Sayigh says.Formally called child-directed communication, these inflections typically involve higher pitches and a wider pitch range, like what was observed in the dolphins.“Bottlenose dolphins are a main candidate for child-directed communication,” says Quincy Gibson, a marine mammal behavioral ecologist.Similar to humans, these dolphins form strong mother-baby bonds and learn vocalizations.
But to confirm this study's results, scientists should analyze signature whistles of freely swimming, uncontrolled dolphin moms, notes Gibson.“We do need to look at this question in more natural and undisturbed conditions.” Still, Gibson says, “The idea that there might be similar forces driving parentese in such different species is just really cool.”

Tips on How to Study Smarter
Having good study skills is always helpful. And it's more important in the present situation, where online classes are growing.Students are likely to learn without a teacher or parent watching over. 16 Here are some tips to develop good study skills.
●Practice, practice, practice! Musicians practice their instruments.Athletes practice sports skills. The same should go for learning. 17 In one study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored better than those who studied in the normal way.
●Test yourself. Before big tests, you may often cover up the notes, and then try to recall them. This practice can help nearly everyone. You can put questions down on one side of the paper and the answers on the other side. 18 Teachers often dig deeper. They don't just ask shallow questions.
●Learn from mistakes.A secret of science: Mistakes help understanding. If you don't find out what the answer is, you're wasting your time.Checking the answers can make your study time more efficient.Check to see if you are right. You can then focus on what you get wrong. 19 9
● 20 Students know some good study skills, yet many of you don't actually do these things.Often you fail to plan ahead. So do make plans. And try to stick to a routine, too.For example, you can have a set time and place where you do schoolwork and study. And get enough sleep—not just the night before the test but for weeks or months on end.
A.Focus on your plan.
B.You can add more skills.
C.Make a plan and stick to it.
D.In fact, mistakes are actually a primary key to learning.
E.Try to test yourself in the way the teacher asks questions.
F.So you will have to manage your time and study more on your own.
G.If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice.

閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開(kāi)頭語(yǔ)續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Every Saturday, Bibi hung out at her grandma's laundry and dry-cleaning store while her mom worked.Bibi loved being with her grandma, but she wanted to do more than just draw and read.“How about I write down what people bring in and pin a number to it?” Bibi offered. With Grandma nearby, she did fine. But the next order was an
enormous bedspread.Bibi checked it in, but when she went to lift it off the counter, it wouldn't move. She tried moving it, but it toppled over on her.“I'm OK!” She giggled from under the soft material.Grandma lifted the bedspread off her and smiled.“Why don't you draw for a little while,” she suggested.“You're such a good artist.”Bibi sighed.“But I wanted to help you.” Grandma didn't want her to handle the hot presser or the iron. She could put the stiff cardboard into the ready washed shirts, but that was about it.“Why don't you draw a picture of more customers coming in?” Grandma joked.“Maybe that would help!”
Bibi went outside. It was a clear fall day.The last leaves were starting their lazy drift to the ground. She spotted her babysitter, Stephanie.Stephanie was painting big letters on the window of the hardware store.“Stephanie!” Bibi called.“You're going to get in trouble.” Stephanie laughed.“The high school cheerleading(啦啦隊(duì)) is painting windows for our football game next weekend. Some of the shop owners said we could.”
“Does that paint wash off?” Bibi asked.“Yep.It's just cornstarch(玉米淀粉), soap, and food coloring,” said Stephanie.Bibi saw other kids from the high school painting designs on windows up and down the street.“GO, TIGERS!” said the window of the nail salon in huge letters.“HEAR US ROAR!” said the window of the milkshake shop.“I can help you!” Bibi called to Stephanie, her heart beating fast.“I can draw!” “Sorry, Bibi,” Stephanie said.“I'm out of paint, and I have to get home.Thank you, though!” Bibi was so disappointed. She stared at Grandma's windows. They were bare.

Suddenly an idea burst into Bibi's head. After asking permission, Bibi went to the market and bought a small box of cornstarch and a package of food coloring. Then she mixed cornstarch and soap from Grandma, stirring them until they were thick like paint.Everything was in place. She wrote her message, outlining the words with washable black markers on the windows.Using her biggest brush, she filled in the letters with different colors. Then came the fun part. She spent extra time drawing the picture.
When she finished, Bibi went inside to get Grandma. When they came back out, a bunch of kids were gathered there.“Great job!” said one girl.“Perfect,” said another.Bibi's grandma looked up at the window to see what it was with pride.“AFTER THE GAME, BRING YOUR UNIFORMS HERE!” the window said.Bibi had drawn a picture of the team's uniforms jumping into a big tub with soap bubbles.Grandma clapped her hands and hugged Bibi.“This just might help,” she said. And after the game, it did.
