WORKING OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
As an adult, one of the first questions you are asked1 when meeting someone new is, “What do you do?” This is because2 your career is a very important part of who you are3. The career you have defines your life, and so taking time to think about it is an essential exercise for young people.
The best time to start thinking about possible careers4 is while5 you are still at school, before6 you make any choices about your further education. This, however, is not always easy. Some people know what7 they want to do from a young age, but8 many others just have a few ideas bouncing around in their heads.
One of the most effective ways to get some insight on a possible career path is to complete9 a “career aptitude test”. The results of the test will tell you about your strengths and interests, and10 some tests also suggest careers that11 you may be suited to. Having this information12 will provide you with a better chance of finding a job you like13.There are many free tests online, so14 give one a try. Getting a head start15 in considering your future career16 may help you for the rest of your life. You don't want to look back in years to come and say, “I wish I had thought17 more about what18 I really wanted to do.” 9動詞不定式作表語 10連接兩個并列分句 11引導定語從句,修飾先行詞careers 12動名詞短語作主語 13定語從句,省略了引導詞that/which 14并列連詞連接兩個并列句 15動名詞短語作主語 16動名詞短語作介詞in的賓語 17賓語從句,省略了連接詞that 18引導賓語從句,作介詞about的賓語
There are many different kinds of career aptitude tests. Some ask questions about your personal interests and attitudes. Others focus more on asking you to rate different kinds of work scenarios, like working as a librarian or a lawyer. Of course, while completing19 these sorts of tests, it20 is very important to be honest—and don't worry—there are no right or wrong answers.
One popular test asks the participants to grade their preferences for a variety of work tasks. Their answers are then analysed and21 divided up between six different types of work personalities. The participant is then given a chart showing their score for each type of work personality22. The top three scores are used to make23 a code that24 indicates the participant's overall work personality. This code is then used to generate a list of career suggestions.
Career Aptitude Test example Page 1 of 10 How do you feel about the work tasks below 1.Assemble a chest of drawers 2.Drive an ambulance 3.Help develop a cure for breast cancer 4.Analyse the elements hydrogen and radium 5.Design a new range of wrist accessories 6.Design clothes for brides and bridegrooms 7.Teach children geometry 8.Help and advise people in serious debt 9.Manage a hair and nail shop 10.Provide investment advice 11.Check and edit education materials 12.Categorise employee profiles
Your test results are below. Your work personality code is A I R. R:Hands on, active, technical I:Observant, intellectual A:Creative, imaginative, original S:Helpful, people oriented, responsible E:Persuasive, confident C:Organised, detail oriented
職業性格代碼為A I R。
The career suggestions are also based on your education and experience level, but25 you can look at higher level careers as well, which26 is very useful for high school students. For example, you could look at the basic careers to see what27 work you might like now, and28 then look at the more advanced careers so29 you know what30 you may like to aim for in the future. This is a great tool to help plan your career and let you know what31 targets you need to reach to get there.
In conclusion, career aptitude tests are clearly a very useful tool. However, it32 is important to remember that33 they are only meant for guidance. The secret to a good career is finding something34 that35 you are passionate about. So try a few tests online and start thinking about your future career right now!

(2024·廣西南寧高二下期末)Jan Ernst Matzeliger was born on September 15, 1852.Matzeliger's father was a Dutch engineer. Showing mechanical gift at a young age, Matzeliger began working in machine shops managed by his father at 10. At 19, he left Suriname to see the world as a sailor on an East Indian merchant ship.
After settling in Philadelphia in 1873, Matzeliger struggled to make a living in Philadelphia. In 1877, he moved to Lynn, Massachusetts, to seek work in the town's rapidly growing shoe industry. He found a position in a shoe factory. Matzeliger learned cloth trade, which made shoes almost wholly by hand.
Shoemakers made molds (模具) of customers' feet with wood or stone. The shoes were then sized and shaped according to the molds. The process of shaping was done entirely by hand. This was considered the most difficult and time consuming.
Matzeliger set out to find a solution to the problems he found in the shoe making process. He thought there had to be a way to develop a good method for lasting shoes. He began coming up with designs for machines that could do the job. After experimenting with several models, he applied for a patent on a “shoe lasting machine (鞋楦機)”. The machine held a shoe on a shoe tree, pulled the leather down around the heel, set and drove in the nails, and then produced the completed shoe. It could produce 700 pairs of shoes a day—more than 10 times the amount produced by human hands.
Matzeliger's shoe lasting machine was an immediate success. In 1889, the Consolidated Lasting Machine Company was formed to make the devices, with Matzeliger receiving a large amount of stock in the organization.
Matzeliger's shoe lasting machine increased shoe production greatly. The result was the employment of more unskilled workers and the increase of low cost, high quality shoes for people around the world.

Today, one girl came and sat down. I started with how we usually do. She can speak but cannot hear and lip read. I asked one question, and she went on for 10 minutes straight, and in Tamil I understood a couple of words here and there, so I understood that she was not saying anything connected with what I asked. I just kept on listening to her without speaking a word. This went on for an hour and a half! Then, after a long pause, I told her to get back on track with another question. And then she shared for another half an hour straight! The whole time I was just looking in her eyes which would go here and there but come back to me. In the end, I just got up and hugged her and she was smiling wider.
Then I invited her to have juice with me. She said yes. What put me in a state of fear was realizing, just a few minutes later, that treating my new friend to some juice was the first celebration of my very first salary! (2024·陜西省西安市高二下期末)One of the treasures from my classroom is a little wooden apple painted with the saying “To teach is to touch a life forever.”
Throughout my career, I often thought a great deal about the idea of touching lives and making a difference. I always measured my success by hugs and smiles from my students, not by data and test scores.
I can clearly remember how I became a teacher. I had once been a high school dropout. In order to find a secretarial job to make a living, I attended a typing training course, where I came across my life coach, Mr Martin. He told me that both a degree and ability were important in the journey of life, and encouraged me to apply for college admission.
With Mr Martin's help and inspiration, I went back to high school and then entered a local college. College life proved challenging but rewarding. I earned a master's degree in English Education, and set out on my own career as an English teacher.
Being a teacher, I had the privilege of working with diverse students, each with unique strengths. One student, Eddie, stood out. Eddie was bright and loved stories but disliked English. During my lessons, he would sit quietly in his seat, frustrated. Determined to help Eddie, I tried a different approach. Knowing his love for stories, I incorporated (使并入) storytelling into English lessons. Then I found that his eyes lit up, and then he became an active participant. Gradually, his attitude towards English changed. Eddie's transformation reminded me why I became a teacher. It wasn't about test scores. It was about making a difference.
I taught many students, but I didn't forget Mr Martin's teaching. One day, I dropped by his office without an appointment. “You probably don't remember me,” I said, “but I came here five years ago. I just want to thank you for your help.” “Of course, I remember you,” he said. “I remember your face and your story. How have you been doing?” I told him that I was teaching English and that I owed all of my success to him. He was proud of me.

1.續寫詞數應為150個左右;
Years later, I was shopping in a supermarket when I heard a voice behind me. “Eddie, you want to be an English teacher But I remember you used to hate English,” I said.

Years later, I was shopping in a supermarket when I heard a voice behind me. Turning around, I saw a familiar face—Eddie, now a grown man. “Miss, is that you?” he exclaimed. We hugged and caught up on each other's lives. Eddie mentioned that after graduating, he'd traveled abroad, experienced different cultures, and realized the importance of English. Inspired by my teaching methods, he now wanted to become an English teacher himself, to pass on the joy of learning and make a difference in others' lives.
“Eddie, you want to be an English teacher But I remember you used to hate English,” I said. He smiled and nodded, “That's true, Miss. But you changed my perspective. Your storytelling approach made me realize the beauty of the language and literature. I want to do the same for others, to inspire them like you did for me.” Hearing this, my heart was filled with pride. I knew my decision to become a teacher had been the right one. Moments like these were the true measure of my success.

(2024·上海市奉賢區多校高二下期末模擬)The fact that gender diversity is something that companies constantly desire highlights the problem in itself. Across industries, the workforce gender balance is still highly skewed (偏向……的), even in fields which do not traditionally involve laborious work. The tech industry is a case in point, with the workforce imbalance definitely being one of the most prominent on the list.
Diversity and inclusion need to go hand in hand, and women around the world are increasingly assuming important positions and taking core decisions in the tech sector. These women are driving technological change and innovation which impact the industry at large.
Gender diversity, like diversity in general, is important for varied perspectives and thought processes in a company. These perspectives are what help shape advancements and new ideas in technology and overall operations for the success of the business. This is especially true for technologies such as AI.
According to a 2017 report on Higher Education by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, women were at or near parity (對等) among undergraduate degrees in science IT and computer. Most women equal men when it comes to skills, but face discrimination in other areas, thus creating a gap and reducing the will to continue at the company.
According to reports, biased treatment within the workplace is the most frequently cited reason for leaving, followed by poor management. There is still scope for a shift in attitudes at workplaces, which is a major obstacle when it comes to preserving women employees. In order to retain this talent and hire more talent like this, governments, NGOs and leaders from tech organizations need to come together to help close the gender gap further by providing more flexible work options and decision making opportunities for women.
More and more women across the world are interested in looking for tech careers or maintaining their existing ones. There is a need to encourage them to take up roles in AI and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) with opportunities that are both fair and equal. Given the computer driven nature of AI, there is a need for women from diverse backgrounds to balance out the conventionally male dominated profession to give an accurate representation.

One of the treasures from my classroom is a little wooden apple painted with the saying “To teach is to touch a life forever.”
