——Listening and Speaking——

THE AMAZING ANIMALS OF AUSTRALIA
Our topic today is “Creatures Unique to Australia”, with questions answered by wildlife expert, Dr Jim Smith.
Australia has lots of unique animals, but which animal is a symbol of the country
It has to be the kangaroo, as1 it has a wide distribution throughout the country2. It's a tough animal that3 has to survive in a difficult environment. Also, it cannot walk backwards, so4 it is always moving forwards. This expresses the strength and resolve of the Australians as individuals and as a nation. Baby kangaroos weigh only two grammes at birth. They then find their way into their mother's pouch—a kind of pocket—to stay safe and warm5. They sleep and drink milk in that temporary, protected6 environment until7 they are about seven or eight months old. After this phase, they go out to try their legs. After they learn to jump, they gradually spend less time with their mother and8 learn to be independent. Kangaroos may look cute, but9 encounters with them don't always end so well. Kangaroos can hit and kick very hard, so10 please folks, if11 you see some kangaroos, remember they're not for petting12! 1引導(dǎo)原因狀語(yǔ)從句 2介詞短語(yǔ)作后置定語(yǔ),修飾distribution 3引導(dǎo)定語(yǔ)從句,修飾先行詞animal 4連接兩個(gè)并列分句,后一個(gè)分句表示結(jié)果 5動(dòng)詞不定式短語(yǔ)作目的狀語(yǔ) 6過(guò)去分詞作定語(yǔ),修飾environment 7引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句 8連接兩個(gè)并列謂語(yǔ)spend ...
Koalas are cute, and we see so many pictures of people holding them. But in many places in Australia, it13 is against the law to even touch them. Can you clarify that 13 it為形式主語(yǔ),不定式短語(yǔ)to even touch them是真正的主語(yǔ)
They are really quite cute, but14 the truth is, koalas are very sensitive creatures who15 can easily panic because of even small changes in their environment. They spend quite a lot of time eating, sleeping, and hanging onto tree trunks, so interaction with humans can cause them a lot of stress. Because of this, the government began to make laws against touching koalas, in the interest of animal protection, as well as public safety. So, if you see one in the wild, you shouldn't approach it to pick it up or even touch it. If16 you want to hold a koala, you have to go to certain licensed zoos where17 animal experts make sure that the koalas selected for each session are in a good state for human contact and18 that they are handled for only a limited time and on a limited frequency of occasions.
So, we've talked about some cute animals. What about animals which19 aren't so cute 19引導(dǎo)定語(yǔ)從句,修飾先行詞animals
My favourite is a little creature called the Tasmanian devil20. If21 you are out camping in Tasmania and come across one, the experience might scare you! Tasmanian devils hunt at night, so you won't usually see them, but22 you may hear their loud cries when23 they are fighting or eating. The noise they make could wake the dead. Frightening! They are about the size of small dogs and look like rather large black rats. They also have a terrible smell! Their diet is mostly dead animals. Fortunately, despite their name, they are generally not violent towards people.
Australia also has some animals that many people have never heard of, for example, the duck billed platypus. Is that some kind of bird
Not at all. While24 it may lay eggs in a nest like a bird, it's really a primitive mammal, with a unique biology. Its eggs hatch after about ten days, and then the baby platypus nurses from its mother like all other mammals. Its nose looks like a duck's bill, and it has feet like a duck's so it can dive under the water, but25 it's covered in hair.Do you know what26's really strange about a platypus The platypus doesn't use its senses of sight or smell to find food. It has a capacity to find food in the water by using electrical sensors in its bill. There are27 only a small handful of animals in the world that28 can do that! 24引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句 25并列連詞and, so, but連接四個(gè)并列分句 26引導(dǎo)賓語(yǔ)從句 27此處為there be句型,主語(yǔ)為only a small ... animals 28引導(dǎo)定語(yǔ)從句,修飾先行詞animals

You can also go kayaking (皮劃艇), stopping at some of the secluded beaches that line the park.
Bouddi National Park
Located on the Central Coast, Bouddi National Park is one for beautiful landscapes and beaches. Just 90 minutes from Sydney, Bouddi is a hidden treasure. You can experience Bouddi National Park on a day trip. Pack your picnic goods and head on the 8.5 km (one way) Bouddi Coastal Walk—it'll give you a perfect taste of the best of what the park has to offer!

Joy Ryan didn't get a passport until she was aged 91. But a year after becoming the oldest person to visit all 63 National Parks in the US, Grandma Joy is setting out on a new global challenge with her grandson Brad Ryan, 42.
This pair, who became famous in 2023 for exploring their national parks, are now planning to travel to all seven continents in the world together. “I don't have many years left, so hurry up and go,” Grandma Joy, now 94, says. “If I slow down, I don't get anything done.”
While Brad assumed that traveling with an elderly person might spoil the fun a little bit, he quickly found that this wasn't the case. In fact, it was quite the opposite. “It made the experience of being in the great outdoors much richer,” he says, explaining that having to move more slowly meant he was able to take everything in in a more meaningful way. “I wasn't rushing through the places that I was visiting. I was really taking the time to appreciate smaller details.”
In the nearly 10 years since their first trip, Brad has noticed a big change in Grandma Joy's physical health, explaining that she was quite shaky in the beginning but has become a lot more capable. Being able to share so many special moments with Grandma Joy has also meant that Brad has been able to ask questions that he's never had the opportunity to ask before. While they clearly get on well with each other. the pair's significant age gap has unavoidably led to occasional conflicts, especially when it comes to their different tastes in music.
Life is very short. As for Grandma Joy, she's enjoying making up for lost time, and now has several stamps in her first passport. “As for me, the glass is half full, not half empty. And the people that I meet along the way lift my spirits. Besides, not everybody is lucky enough to have a grandson that's willing to drag them around,” she says.

The panda is a mammal classified in the bear family, native to central western and southwestern China. It is easily recognized by its large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. It has a diet which is 99% bamboo and it may eat honey, oranges, and bananas when available. It is a conservation reliant endangered species. Although reports show that the number of wild pandas is on the rise, scientists hope that one day they will have enough pandas to be set free and let them live in the wild peacefully.

It was the middle of July when we drove way up into the mountains and backpacked up a stream. The banks were lined with old trees. We waded (涉水) through the cold water, our backpacks balanced on our heads.
We set up camp on a sandy flat beside a pool. What a swimming hole! My brother and I swam, diving and playing in the clear water. We hiked upstream, against little rapids. Suddenly we heard a roaring sound, and as we came around a bend, we saw what was causing it.
A huge waterfall! It rose high above us. “Wow!” I said. “Let's climb it!” “No way,” said Dad. “End of the road.” We turned back but I couldn't stop thinking about the waterfall and how much I'd like to climb it. Later, lying in my bag, I thought of the waterfall, wondering what was on the top ... then finally I fell asleep.
The sun was hot as a bonfire. We cut leaves as wide as elephants' ears, and tied them on our heads to keep us cool. Then we waded against the little rapids deep into the stream. I was the first one to the waterfall. “Let's go up. I think there must be something unique out there,” I said. My brother smiled. “If you go, I will,” he said.
I found a way alongside the falls, and then we climbed like mountain goats. Mom shouted, “Be careful!” And we inched our way up and up—the tips of our toes gripping thin ledges (巖架), our fingers finding cracks. Sometimes rocks were unstable, but we clung (粘住) like glue. We had to.
The waterfall roared by our ears. “I'm scared,” said my brother. I said, “Just don't look down.” Near the top, a tree grew out of the rock. It was just what we needed. When we stood at the top, we clapped our hands and shouted down, “Hey Mom, Dad! It's like a whole other world up here! Come on up! You can do it!” And I did a little dance.

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the beautiful Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan Province, China. Today, we'll explore this amazing place, filled with natural beauty and fascinating stories.
Jiuzhaigou, meaning “Nine Village Valley”, is known for its beautiful blue green lakes, multi level waterfalls, and colorful forests. It's as if Mother Nature decided to use all her colors at once! The scenery here is so breathtaking that it feels like you're walking through a living painting.
One of the most magical spots is Five Flower Lake. The water in this lake is so clear and bright that it looks as if it's been photoshopped. According to legend, a goddess dropped her mirror here, and its broken pieces turned into this brilliant, colorful lake. So, if you ever lose a mirror, just hope it results in something as beautiful as this!
As we wander through the valley, you'll hear the calming sounds of waterfalls. Nuorilang Waterfall is one of the most famous and is said to be the widest highland waterfall in China. There's a local story that these falls are actually the tears of a mountain spirit who cried with joy when she saw the beauty of Jiuzhaigou for the first time. Talk about being moved to tears!
Another fun spot is Panda Lake. It's said that pandas love this area because of the abundance of bamboo. While the pandas are a bit shy and might not show up for photos, you can always imagine them relaxing somewhere nearby, having a bamboo snack. If you see some missing pieces of bamboo, just know a happy panda was there!
Thank you for joining me on this fun tour of Jiuzhaigou Valley. I hope you've enjoyed learning about its natural wonders and fascinating stories. Remember, nature has the best stories, and sometimes they come with a good laugh. Enjoy the rest of your magical adventure here in Jiuzhaigou!

Baby kangaroos weigh only two grammes at birth. They then find their way into their mother's pouch—a kind of pocket—to stay safe and warm5.

Warrumbungle National Park
Travel six hours northwest of Sydney, and you've reached the astronomy capital of Australia. Warrumbungle National Park is a nature and star lover's dream. This land is home to the Southern Hemisphere's first Dark Sky Park, which means you'll be treated to nights of no light pollution and out of this world stargazing. Besides, the Warrumbungles has several adventurous hikes. The Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk is considered one of the best in Australia!
Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park
Ku Ring Gai Chase is the second oldest national park in Australia. We love this park for its proximity (鄰近) to Sydney (a quick 45 minute drive from the city), significant Aboriginal (澳大利亞土著的) sites and breathtaking scenic views. There are many walks you can do here.
The beautiful water makes this park an ideal destination during summer, but it also provides a fantastic point for whale watching over the winter. You can experience Bouddi National Park on a day trip. Pack your picnic goods and head on the 8.5 km (one way) Bouddi Coastal Walk—it'll give you a perfect taste of the best of what the park has to offer!
Dorrigo National Park
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dorrigo National Park is one to explore! Located just shy of four hours from Byron Bay, the park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests and has been made over millions of years. You'd be right then to expect some of the most stunning waterfalls here. For one of the best experiences, head to the Skywalk lookout. This elevated walkway will take you right into the heart of the rainforest, providing soaring views 21 meters over the rainforest all the way to the coast.

“I don’t have many years left, so hurry up and go,” Grandma Joy, now 94, says. “If I slow down, I don’t get anything done.”
In the nearly 10 years since their first trip, Brad has noticed a big change in Grandma Joy’s physical health, explaining that she was quite shaky in the beginning but has become a lot more capable. Being able to share so many special moments with Grandma Joy has also meant that Brad has been able to ask questions that he’s never had the opportunity to ask before. While they clearly get on well with each other. the pair’s significant age gap has unavoidably led to occasional conflicts, especially when it comes to their different tastes in music.

And the people that I meet along the way lift my spirits. Besides, not everybody is lucky enough to have a grandson that’s willing to drag them around,” she says.
4.What is the new ambition of Grandma Joy and Brad

“Let’s climb it!” “No way,” said Dad. “End of the road.” We turned back but I couldn’t stop thinking about the waterfall and how much I’d like to climb it.

It’s as if Mother Nature decided to use all her colors at once! The scenery here is so breathtaking that it feels like you’re walking through a living painting.
