FIRST AID FOR BURNS
The skin is an essential part of your body and1 is its largest organ. Your skin acts as a barrier against disease, toxins, and the sun's rays. It also helps control your body temperature, prevents your body from losing too much water, warns you when things are too hot or cold2, and3 gives you your sense of touch. As you can imagine4, getting burnt5 can lead to very serious injuries. The first and most important step in the treatment of burns6 is giving first aid. CAUSES OF BURNS You can get burnt by a variety of things: hot liquids, steam, fire, radiation, the sun, electricity, acids, or other chemicals. TYPES OF BURNS Burns are divided into three types, depending on the depth of skin damage7. First-degree burns These affect only the top few millimetres of the skin. These burns are not serious. Examples include mild sunburn and burns caused by other minor household incidents8. Second-degree burns These go below the top layer of the skin. They are serious and take a few weeks to get better. Examples include burns caused by hot liquids9. Third-degree burns These affect every layer of the skin, and sometimes the tissue under it. Examples include burns caused by electric shocks, burning10 clothes, or petrol fires. These burns cause very severe internal injuries and11 the victim must go to the hospital at once. CHARACTERISTICS OF BURNS First degree burns ·dry, red, and mildly swollen ·mildly painful ·turn white when pressed12 Second-degree burns ·red and swollen; blisters; watery surface ·extremely painful Third-degree burns ·black and white ·swollen; the tissue underneath can often be seen ·little or no pain if13 nerves are damaged; may be painful around the edges of the burn FIRST-AID TREATMENT 1 Place burns under cool running14 water, especially within the first ten minutes. The cool water stops the burning process and15 reduces the pain and swelling. 2 Dry the burnt area gently with a clean cloth. 3 Remove any clothes using scissors16 if necessary17, unless18 you see the fabric sticking to19 the burnt skin. 4 Cover the burnt area with a loose clean cloth. Applying oil to the injured areas20 is a bad idea, as21 it will keep the heat in the wounds and may cause infection. 5 If burns are on the face, make sure the victim can still breathe. 6 If the victim is suffering from second or third degree burns, there is an urgent need to take22 him/her to the hospital at once.

Remove any clothes using scissors if necessary, unless you see the fabric sticking to the burnt skin.(教材P51) 如有必要,用剪刀剪掉燒傷部位的衣服,除非衣服與被燒傷的皮膚粘連在一起。
【分析】 句子主干為Remove any clothes,是祈使句;using scissors是現(xiàn)在分詞短語作方式狀語;if necessary是if條件狀語從句的省略,可還原為if it is necessary;unless引導(dǎo)條件狀語從句;sticking to the burnt skin為現(xiàn)在分詞短語作賓語補(bǔ)足語。

It was a sunny afternoon in June when 20-year-old Anthony Perry stepped off the train at Chicago's 69th Street station. On the platform, two men were fighting bitterly. Then the unthinkable happened: the pair fell over the edge and onto the tracks. One man ended up on his back. Suddenly, he started convulsing unnaturally. He had fallen on the third rail, the conduit (導(dǎo)線管) for the 600 volts of electricity that powers Chicago's L trains. The aggressor leaped backward, bounded back up onto the platform and disappeared.
Perry couldn't just stand there and watch. He sat at the edge of the platform and eased himself down. He took a few quick bounds and approached the victim. The guy looked dead, his body still moving violently as the electricity pulsed. Gathering up his courage, Perry reached down and grasped the victim's wrist. Instantly, he felt a blast of electric shock shoot through his body. Perry shrank and jumped back. He reached down a second time, and was shocked again. But the third time he seized the man's wrist and forearm and, braving the shock, pulled with all his strength. The guy's body slid briefly along the third rail, coming to rest on the gravel on the outer edge of the tracks.
The man was breathing, but irregularly. Something wasn't right. “Give him chest compressions (按壓)!” yelled a woman. Perry was no expert, but for a few moments he worked on the man's heart until the victim began convulsing. Then he heard a sudden noise behind him—medical workers and firefighters had arrived. Perry let the professionals take over. His heart still racing from the electric shocks, he climbed back up onto the platform, grabbed his things and headed home.
The evening news reported the incident. After a friend outed him to the media, Perry__became__the__toast__of__Chicago. Perry was then recruited by the Chicago Fire Department and is now training to be an emergency medical technician.

When no one else was able to save a drowning 34 year old man, a boy weighing only 80 pounds quickly became his hero.
11 year old Adam was hanging out at the pool of his apartment building with his family when the man sank to the bottom of the deep end, his arms spread out and his eyes wide from eight feet down in the water.
Surprisingly, Adam was the only one at the pool who could swim at the time. Before his family had moved to St. Paul, Minnesota three years ago, his parents had never had the ability to take swimming lessons. Luckily, they believed that Adam should have a few swimming lessons. “Some survival skills are a must,” his father said.
When trouble struck in the pool, however, Adam's father had tried to help the man from a swim ring, but he couldn't reach the man's hand. Then, Adam jumped into the pool.
Despite the man weighing almost 100 pounds heavier than the boy, Adam successfully managed to pull the man up to the surface and get him out of the pool. Though Adam's uncle had never received CPR training, he started CPR on the man based on what he had seen in movies and television.
A few minutes later, the man started to move his hands. Doctors then arrived and took the man to the hospital where he has since made a full recovery. The man stopped by the boy's house later the very same week to thank him for saving his life.
“It's simply wonderful,” said Adam's uncle. “If he had not been there, I don't know. I'm sure it would not be a happy ending.” Adam's father also says that he plans on taking swimming lessons with his son in the near future.

What would happen today, if there was an accident at your workplace Would employees know what to do Would the injured person get the best possible care
When an accident happens, a first-aid programme that meets the requirements of the law and is made to the type and size of the workplace can really make a difference between life and death, or between recovery and lasting disability.
Employers should make sure that all employees know where emergency information is posted at the workplace. The emergency notice should show the phone numbers of the closest ambulance service, rescue unit, fire station, and hospital. The amount of time it takes to look up one of these important numbers can make a big difference to a seriously injured person. The place of first-aid equipment and rescue equipment should also be posted.
All workplaces should have a person with first-aid or medical training in case of an emergency. First-aid equipment and supplies, including a variety of dressings and instruments, as well as an up-to-date first-aid book, should be stored where they can be reached quickly and easily in case of an accident.
These supplies should be inspected frequently, making sure they are kept in sanitary and usable conditions and re-stored after use. Larger workplaces may need more than one fully-equipped first-aid bag.
In isolated workplaces, emergency supplies and an action plan are especially important. At least one person trained in first-aid should always be on-site (在現(xiàn)場(chǎng)的). If first-aid is not given properly, it can sometimes hurt rather than help an injured person, or even be harmful to the person giving first-aid.
All workers should know who is trained to give first-aid on site, where first-aid equipment is put, and what medical professionals or medical instruments should be found if a medical emergency happens.

Remove any clothes using scissors if necessary, unless you see the fabric sticking to the burnt skin.

After a friend outed him to the media, Perry became the toast of Chicago. Perry was then recruited by the Chicago Fire Department and is now training to be an emergency medical technician.

A.The man had lost his consciousness.
B.The victim lay injured on top of a track.
C.The rescuer was at risk of an electric shock.
D.The electricity powering trains was hard to cut off.
和第二段中的“Instantly, he felt a blast of electric shock shoot through his body.(瞬間,他感到一陣電擊穿過他的身體。)”

A.He had received professional first aid training.
B.The local newspaper interviewed him on the spot.
C.His chest compressions played a key role in saving life.
D.His heart beat fast because of nervousness and tiredness.
根據(jù)第三段中的“The man was breathing ... until the victim began convulsing.”
3.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Perry landed a job in the Fire Department.
B.The city of Chicago awarded Perry a prize.
C.People in Chicago toasted Perry for his brave deeds.
D.Perry got popular and greatly admired in Chicago.
根據(jù)前面三段講述的Anthony Perry在火車站英勇救助跌落在鐵軌上的受害者,以及畫線句的上文“The evening news reported ... to the media (晚間新聞報(bào)道了這一事件。
4.What is the author's main purpose of writing the text
A.To credit a hero with saving a victim's life.
B.To highlight Perry's courage in stopping a fight.
C.To stress the importance of calmness in rescue work.
D.To display people's cooperation in assisting the victim.
