Rather than travel by commercial airline all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train1. For both of them, the thought of crossing the whole country by rail2 was exciting. Before starting out3, they spent a couple of days in Vancouver, seeing the sights4. During their first day, as5 is typical of Vancouver, it rained. Despite the weather, they were able to take a boat ride out into the bay, and6 later visit an island that7 had wonderful shops selling crafts and antiques8. The next day was clear and mild, and9 they were pleased to see the beautiful mountains looking out over the city10. Later, they took a pleasant hike in a forest just a short distance away. The next morning, the two girls arose early to take the train11 to Lake Louise, passing through the Canadian Rockies12. Seen from the train window13, the mountains and forests of Canada looked massive. When14 the train arrived at the station, they took a taxi to Lake Louise, where15 the blue water literally took their breath away with its exceptional beauty. They spent the night, and16 then took a coach bound north through the Canadian Rockies to Jasper. Looking at the beautiful scenery17, they both agreed that18 it was the most awesome journey they had ever taken19. In addition to seeing spectacular mountain peaks and forests20, one highlight of their trip was being able to see many different creatures, including deer, mountain goats, and even a grizzly bear and an eagle21 . From Jasper, they caught the train towards Toronto. One of the train's first stops was in Edmonton, the provincial capital of Alberta, the centre of Canada's huge oil and gas drilling industry22. Edmonton is freezing cold in winter, with daily temperatures averaging -10 ℃23. Since24 it can be too cold to25 go outdoors, Edmonton is home to many shopping malls. In fact, one of the largest shopping malls in North America is in Edmonton. From Edmonton, the train headed southeast across the great Canadian Prairie. At school, Daiyu and Liu Qian had learnt that26 Canada's population is only slightly over thirty-seven million. However, they did not anticipate seeing such an open country27, and were truly amazed. They went through two wheat-growing provinces, where28 they saw a bunch of farms that covered a very large area29. After another day on the train, eventually they were back in an urban area, the city of Winnipeg30. From there, they travelled through the night, and31 woke up in Ontario—a land of forests and lakes. The train thundered on, through the rolling hills. The bushes and maple trees outside their windows32 were red, gold, and orange, and33 there was frost on the ground, confirming that autumn had arrived in Canada34. Night came again, and the train turned south towards Toronto. When35 they woke up the next morning and pulled back the curtains, they could see the wide stretch of Lake Huron—one of the four Great Lakes on Ontario's southern border36 . It was not until 9:30 a.m. that they finally reached the capital of Ontario, Toronto37. All in all, their trip from Vancouver to Toronto38 had taken a duration of four days. 1 Rather than ... 置于句首加強語氣;to fly ..., (to) take ... , (to) travel ... 9.a land of forests and lakes 森林和湖泊密布的土地10.the rolling hills 綿延的群山(三)語法難點1. With__my__father__fixing__the__radio__set,__I gathered the parts for him. Having the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there. So after I finished the study, I went to Yellowknife in the Northwest. I clearly remember the sixth night in Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 pm and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera. The northern lights were flickering in the sky!I was amazed and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that my hands and feet were numb with cold. Actually, the time of my being able to be out was limited. I had to bring her camera back to the house in one hour at most, for the camera was going to be broken because of the cold temperature. As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they come down to the south. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures. The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger northern lights flicker in the sky. That's because they occur from the collision between atmospheric gases and solar wind. Much more solar wind reaches Earth when the sun is active, leading to the best northern lights. 1.Why did the author forget to take pictures A.His host mother didn't remind him.B.He was shocked by the wonderful sights.C.He lost all the feelings in his hands and feet.D.The lights flickering disappeared after a while. 根據第二段“The northern lights ... the mysterious lights.(北極光在天空中閃爍! B。2.What can we infer from the text A.The northern lights came out every night.B.The author took lots of pictures with his camera.C.The author could stay as long as he liked outdoors.D.Cameras will be damaged if exposed too long to coldness. D。3.When is the best time to see the northern lights A.They are between the north and south.B.They rise in the east and set in the west.C.They appear in the north part of the sky.D.They come down to the south part of the sky. 根據第四段中的“After that, suddenly ... can be seen.” A。4.Why is it hard for the author to take good pictures A.The lights of the sun affect the northern lights.B.The lights are caused by the collisions of gases.C.The lights stay in the middle for a very short time.D.The colours of the lights are determined by the height. 根據第四段中的“Since it is ... to get good pictures.” 1.phenomena n. Most of the buildings along the main street are eye-catching, deep blues and greens, dotted with red and yellow to form diverse patterns and designs.Santa Catarina Palopó was once a sleepy town of 5,000 people, most of them dependent on agricultural work. But as agriculture began to dry up here, poverty came. To deal with poverty and promote economic growth through tourism, a small but creative group of laborers, artisans, domestic workers and stay at home moms created the Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó project. The project aimed to paint all 850 homes and buildings in bright colors to change the hillside town into a work of art. “We wanted to paint the houses with colors and figures that represent the community,” says the project's executive director Stephany Blanco. “Families can choose designs for their house that are representative of the family.”One of the most representative characteristics of the region is the blue huipil, a traditional blouse which has been worn commonly by local women since the 16th century. That deep sky blue was chosen as the primary color for the Pintando project, with secondary colors found in the sunsets and the nearby lake to make the design more attractive. Inspiration was also found in local culture, symbols such as volcanoes, flowers, and the national bird of Guatemala. Each week, local artists, community members and tourists pick up paintbrushes to make buildings colorful. “At first, the idea of the project was uncertain, but now you can see a considerable difference in the town,” Melissa Whitbeck said. “The color of the buildings is believed to improve the quality of life of the people. It uplifts the people's mood and encourages them to be proud of their hometown.” 1.Why was the Pintando Santa Catarina project started A.Because of a workforce shortage.B.Due to the poor economic conditions.C.Thanks to the increase in population.D.For the old fashioned farming ways. 根據第二段中的“To deal with poverty ... the Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó project.” B。2.What is the project about A.Building family art galleries in Guatemala.B.Creating job opportunities for local artists.C.Developing local tourism by selling artworks.D.Changing the town into a cultural destination. 根據第三段中的“The project aimed to ... into a work of art.(該項目旨在將850棟房屋和建筑粉刷成鮮艷的色彩,將這座山坡小鎮變成一件藝術品。)” D。3.What is the inspiration of the primary color for the project A.The surrounding volcanoes.B.Mayan-styled butterflies.C.A type of traditional clothing.D.The national bird of Guatemala. 根據第四段中的“One of the most representative characteristics ... the primary color for the Pintando project (該地區最具代表性的特征之一是藍色的徽衫,這是一種自16世紀以來當地婦女普遍穿著的傳統襯衫。 C。4.What is Melissa's attitude towards the project A.Positive. At the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring Scenic Spot in Gansu Province, northwest China, the world's first traffic light for camels was set up to manage traffic in the popular tourist area.According to a Chinese state-owned wire service, the problem was that the walking paths for human beings often crossed camel paths, creating traffic chaos (混亂). As a solution, workers cut a gap in the walkway and created a separate route for the camels. The traffic light now manages the flow of traffic at the new crossing.Camel-riding tours are a big attraction for visitors to the area. But visitors to the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring Scenic Spot will now be safe from camel crashes, thanks to the new traffic signal, which turns green to let the animals cross and red to make them stop. The Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring Scenic Spot is already a tourist hot spot thanks to its breathtaking sand dunes (沙丘), an oasis (綠洲) and even the occasional snowstorm which create otherworldly scenery. The strange camel traffic signal could well become another attraction to enjoy on a visit to the scenic area. The area is close to Dunhuang City on the edge of the Gobi Desert, and it used to be an essential resting point for travellers on the Silk Road. Dunhuang's best-known tourist attraction is the Mogao Caves. Canadian architectural company Moon World Resorts announced plans to construct a $5 billion resort that looks like the moon in Dubai. The project, named Moon Dubai, is meant to help visitors experience space tourism, which allows guests to find out what it is like to walk on the moon. The resort will be very luxurious and contemporary, with a lot of components inside that one would already know—for example, a wellness area, residential properties, restaurants, a convention center, and a spa, each with a lunar twist. It will also include a training platform for space agencies and astronauts.Space tourism currently comes with a big price tag, and it's a barrier to entry for most travelers. However, the moon resort experience will be significantly cheaper. A walk on the lunar surface of the moon resort is much more affordable at $500.“Moon Dubai will significantly impact every aspect of the UAE's economy, including tourism, transportation, commercial and residential real estate, infrastructure, financial services, aviation and space, energy, agriculture, technology and of course education,” says Michael R.Henderson, co-founder of Moon World Resorts. “It will be the largest and most successful modern-day tourism project in the MENA region, doubling annual tourism visitations to Dubai based on its global appeal, brand awareness and unique multiple integrated offerings.”Whether the project will eventually take off is currently unknown. If the design can be successful, it will require a 12-month pre-development planning program and a 48-month building process. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for awhile, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. 根據第二段“The northern lights ... the mysterious lights. Most of the buildings along the main street are eye-catching, deep blues and greens, dotted with red and yellow to form diverse patterns and designs.題號 A B難度 ★ ★★Santa Catarina Palopó was once a sleepy town of 5,000 people, most of them dependent on agricultural work. 根據第三段中的“The project aimed to ... into a work of art.(該項目旨在將850棟房屋和建筑粉刷成鮮艷的色彩,將這座山坡小鎮變成一件藝術品。)” D。3.What is the inspiration of the primary color for the project A.The surrounding volcanoes. At the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent SpringScenic Spot in Gansu Province, northwest China, the world's first traffic light for camels was set up to manage traffic in the popular tourist area.According to a Chinese state-owned wire service, the problem was that the walking paths for human beings often crossed camel paths, creating traffic chaos (混亂). The traffic signal is unlikely ever to reach the significance of the Mogao Caves, but at least it might help prevent a few camel traffic jams. 5.What does the underlined word “mirage” in Paragraph 1 probably mean A.Reality. “It will be the largest and most successful modern-day tourism project in the MENA region, doubling annual tourism visitations to Dubai based on its global appeal, brand awareness and unique multiple integrated offerings. ”Whether the project will eventually take off is currently unknown. If the design can be successful, it will require a 12-month pre-development planning program and a48-month building process.
