Dear Jane,
I am really sorry to hear that you feel bad after entering high school.I'd like to talk about it with you.
In fact,in your high school, your classmates are also new students and facing the same problems,so you don't have to worry too much about it.There is also something that you can do to change this situation.First, try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some activities together after school. This will help you understand each other better. Then, help your classmates when they are in trouble and turn to them for help when you have difficulties.
I believe you will make many new friends and have a happy school life there.
Yours,
Li Hua
[片段1]
An air of sorrow and loneliness settled over her.Feeling left out,Jane was getting desperate with loneliness. She rode home from school slowly, numb with sorrow. Then she locked herself in her room, abandoning herself to great sadness. She felt so sad that she found herself crying unconsciously, unable to hold back her tears.
[片段2]
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes,my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take,I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape?Sure,I could have asked her,but something prevented me from doing so.She seemed so content in her observation.I didn't want to mess with that.

Are you looking for some good places for you and your four-leg friend? Here are some for you.
Tahmoor Gorge (峽谷)
The number and quality of swimming holes in this valley immediately take us back to some of our favourite places in Kakadu national park. The only difference here is that you don't need a four-wheel drive,so the best way to go to the gorge is walking. This pet-friendly walk follows the Bargo River through an open gorge that gradually drops to a deep gorge. It is a popular place for locals on weekends. The further you run into the gorge, the less people there are.
Sirius Cove,Mosman
Sirius Cove is one of many quietly beautiful places along the Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach walking trail (路線).The deep,U-shaped bay, with a large grassy area,is popular with picnicking families and their dogs.
Kutti Beach,Vaucluse
We heard about it from a friend, but it is so hidden that it is not easy to find the entrance.Follow Wharf Road until it dead ends at the Vaucluse Amateur Sailing Club.Go right up to the building and look
left. There is a very narrow set of stairs leading to the beach.Go down the steps and open the gate at the bottom.Follow the narrow road along the wall to the sand. The best bit? It's dog-friendly.
MacKenzies Beach,Tamarama
From whale watching hot place MacKenzies Point, follow the sloped (斜的) road to MacKenzies Beach,a dog-friendly,short-time beach that only appears every couple of years when the right combination (結合) of wind and sand on the normal rocky reef happens. They say you aren't a local until you've seen sand at MacKenzies.

When I was a girl growing up,I couldn't once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.Anything we didn't eat at one meal was saved, stored and served as leftovers later on.I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of brown beans with a large cake of cornbread. We would all eat until we were stuffed, but there was always about half of the beans left over.A few days later,my grandma would take those beans out of the refrigerator, boil spaghetti
(意大利面),add vegetables and mix them all together into her delicious spaghetti.I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon for us in the morning, she would always take the oil and carefully pour it into a container. Then she later would use it to flavor so many other dishes.I was an adult before I realized that green beans didn't actually taste like bacon.
I learned their lessons well and tried to never waste food myself after I grew up.I always planned the week's meals ahead of time and
only bought what was on my shopping list,so nothing went to waste.Every meal went into the stomach and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself,my boys or my dogs.To me,throwing food in the trash was just wrong. All the work it took to grow it,harvest it and prepare it needed to be honored, not wasted.
However,I have learned something else over the years. When it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Each moment that you don't live is lost forever.Life can't be saved.Life can't be stored.Life has to be lived TODAY.
Live each moment of your life to the fullest then.Make every day a feast of love with no leftovers.Leo Buscaglia once said,“Each day is a fresh beginning,a little life to itself.”Don't let any of these little lives go to waste. They are gifts.Cherish them.Care for them.Chow down on them.Live your life with a full belly and a full heart.
【語篇解讀】 本文是一篇記敘文。作者從小受到奶奶和媽媽的影響不浪費食物,這對作者的生活產生了影響,讓她知道了要尊重勞動成果,珍惜所擁有的。

4.What did the author's grandma do with the leftover beans?
A.She used them to feed pets.
B.She threw them in the garbage.
C.She used them to make delicious spaghetti.
D.She reserved them in the refrigerator.
C [細節理解題。根據第一段中的“We would all eat until we were stuffed, but there was always about half of the beans left over.A few days later,my grandma would take those beans out of the refrigerator, boil spaghetti, add vegetables and mix them all together into her delicious spaghetti.”可知,奶奶會把剩下的豆子做成美味的意大利面。故選C。]
5.After the author grew up,how did she arrange the week's meals?
A.She threw away any leftovers.

Many kinds of turtles (海龜) found in the Philippines are endangered. But now,the turtles have one less threat. Many people who used to collect their eggs to eat or to sell are now working to keep turtles safe.
Those people are called poachers (偷獵者).Now,however, protection organizations are teaching former poachers how to safely collect the eggs and protect them before they hatch (孵化).The people who do this are paid about 37 cents per egg. That is four times more than they would earn from selling them illegally.
One of the former poachers is Johnny Manlugay.“I've learned to love this work,”he said, adding that he did not know it was illegal to eat turtle eggs and their meat.He now collects the eggs carefully and brings them to a group called Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA),which takes the eggs and puts them under the sand in a safe place. When the baby turtles hatch, they are directed to the water.
The turtles are called“pawikan”in the local language. They are at risk not only from poachers, but also climate change and habitat loss.
Carlos Tamayo is one of CURMA's leaders.“We talked to the poachers, and it turned out poaching was just another means for them to earn a living,”he said.“They had no choice.”
Cabagbag is over 40 years old.His wife and seven-year-old son sometimes help him collect turtle eggs.Since October, they have taken
over 1,000 eggs to CURMA.Cabagbag said that once he received training and learned that the turtles were endangered,he stopped poaching.
When the baby turtles hatch, many visitors come to watch them run down the beach and into the water.Cabagbag said seeing the turtles get safely into the water brings him a feeling of joy.

The world is full of tea drinkers. For many, they simply enjoy the taste. But new research suggests tea might help those who drink it live longer than those who do not.Tea is known to contain substances (物質) that can help reduce inflammation (炎癥).Past studies in China and Japan have suggested several health benefits of green tea. Now,scientists say black tea may show similar benefits.
Scientists from the United States National Cancer Institute carried
out the study. They examined years of data gathered about the tea-drinking behavior of almost 500,000 adults in Britain, where black tea is the most common tea.The study found that high tea intake (攝取量)—two or more cups a day—was linked to a moderate benefit:a 9 to 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause than non-tea drinkers.Scientists say the lowered risk of death held true for study subjects with heart disease. However, researchers said there was no clear finding in connection with deaths from cancer.
Tea contains various elements, including polyphenols (多酚).Polyphenols are considered responsible for the health benefits that have traditionally been linked to tea, especially green tea.Green tea is reported to improve mental ability, alleviate digestive problems and head pain, and help people with weight loss.It has also been studied for possible protective effects against heart disease and cancer.
However, the study of British tea drinkers was based on observing people's behaviors and health. This kind of method cannot prove causeand effect.“Observational studies like this always raise the question:is there something else that makes tea drinkers healthier?”said Marion Nestle,a professor of food studies at New York University.“The study does not offer enough evidence to advise people to change their tea behaviors. If you drink one cup a day already,I think that is good,”said Inoue Choi, who led the study.

13.According to the study, people with high tea intake are likely to ____.
A.stay focused
B.develop cancer
C.get heart disease
D.have a lower risk of death

How to Show Your Friends You Love Them
Psychologists have long thought that humans need meaningful social connections to survive. In fact,it's connected to our mental and physical happiness. 16 .Here are some tips on how to strengthen the existing friendships in our lives.
Give them your skills and talents
Being generous (慷慨的) with your friends—sharing your time, attention or resources with them—is an easy way to keep your friendships.People want to be and stay friends with people who value them, and generosity is a way to express that.Think about what your skills and talents are. 17 .
Shower them with admiration
We often think of admiring as the sort of love we show in romantic relationships. But admiring is more than holding hands and kissing. It's about communicating love and appreciation. There are many ways you can show love to your friends. 18 .Tell them when you think of them in passing. These simple acts provide a layer of safety in the relationship.
 19 .
Think about how good it feels to tell a friend you secretly like a trashy TV show and hear them answer“me too!”We feel a deeper connection to our friends when our vulnerability (脆弱) is met with support. It means they accept us for who we really are,the good and the bad.
Don't sweep your disagreements under the rug (毯子)
20 .People often see them as something that's supposed to be fun and light-hearted,or less formal than romantic or family relationships,so they downplay problems when they arise. But being able to deal with disagreements with friends in a healthy way can strengthen your friendships.Try talking about them.
A.Sing high praise for them
B.Say your struggles and joys
C.Tell them how much they mean to you
D.It can be scary to be open with our feelings
E.And find a way to turn that into a generous act

第二節(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
Dad had passed away the previous year,so Leonard,my grown brother was always quick to help anytime Mum called. This time my brother was asked to tear down an old shed.My sister Angie and I,with no shoes on,dogged his every step, trying to help, though reminded and warned of rusty nails (生銹的釘子) by Mum.
Suddenly,Angie started screaming and Mum came running.Sure enough, she had stepped on a rusty nail.Mum examined my sister's foot while Leonard looked at mine.On my way to see about Angie,I'd stepped on a nail, too. The grown-ups agreed we needed tetanus (破傷風疫苗) shots.
I hated shots,so I whispered to Mum,“I don't want to get a shot.”My mum directed my sister's attention to other place, and then cupped a hand around my ear.“Arlene, you and Angie have to get
tetanus shots.I need you to be brave so she won't be too scared. If you take the shot without crying or screaming, maybe she won't do that as well when her turn comes.”
Loving and respecting my mum and wanting to relieve her worry,I made up my mind to get that awful shot without crying a single tear.
At the hospital,a nurse walked in with a syringe (注射器).Angie's big blue eyes studied the nurse's every move. The needle hurt so much that I wanted to scream.Mum looked down at my sister and then back at me.I knew she was reminding me to be brave.I didn't cry or scream.
Then it was my sister's turn.Mum lowered my sister onto the table.“See there,Angie.Your big sister wasn't afraid to get a shot.Arlene, tell Angie it didn't hurt at all.”
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150 左右;
2.請按如下格式作答。
Mum waited for me to tell Angie that getting the shot wouldn't hurt.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the way home,Angie buried her face in Mum's chest,crying.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
[參考范文]
Mum waited for me to tell Angie that getting the shot wouldn't hurt.I wanted to do what she told me.But if I told Angie it wouldn't hurt,I thought, she wouldn't ever believe me again. So,I cupped my hands around my mouth and yelled,“DON'T LET THEM DO IT TO YOU,ANGIE!”Hearing this,my sister screamed, jumped off the table, and took off down a long hall.Surprised, then angry,my mum hurriedly ran after her.Eventually,Leonard,Mum,and two nurses all got involved and worn out when a doctor gave her the shot.
On the way home,Angie buried her face in Mum's chest, crying.I tried to hold my tears back.I didn't want to cry because of my hurting arm or my hurting foot.I wanted to cry because I'd made things harder on Mum.Suddenly,a tiny finger gently touched my shoulder.I looked up and saw Angie's sweet face.A tear rolled down her cheek as she reached out her hand.I took it in mine, holding like this all the way.Seeing this,my mum and Leonard both smiled.
