The present perfect and the simple past
現在完成時強調過去發生的動作對現在造成的影響或結果，著眼點在現在，而一般過去時單純地描述過去某個時間發生的動作或存在的狀態，與現在沒有直接的關聯。如：
She has just had her lunch. 她剛吃過午飯。（表示她現在不餓。）
She had her lunch two hours ago. 她兩小時前吃了午飯。（僅說明事實，不知道她現在餓不餓。）
現在完成時通常不與表示過去時間的詞語連用，如yesterday, last week, then, three days ago, in 2000等。如：
（×）I have visited the Bund yesterday/last week/three years ago/in 2000.
（√）I visited the Bund yesterday/last week/three years ago/in 2000.

如果與表示“到現在為止的某個/任意時間”的詞語連用，如ever, before, never, yet, recently, already, lately等，通常用現在完成時。如：
I have never seen that film.
I have read the book recently.
The present perfect and the simple past
現在完成時也可以表示過去開始的動作一直持續到現在，并且可能還會繼續下去。此時，它常與連詞 for或since連用，也與延續性動詞搭配，用于表明動作或狀態持續的時間。而一般過去時通常表示過去某個時間點或時間段內完成的動作，動作在過去就已經結束，一般不強調持續性。如:
You have helped me a lot. 你已經幫了我很多忙了。（到目前為止）
My grandmother took good care of me. 我外婆曾悉心照顧我。（在她活著的時候）
