Place: a small city called Xicheng
Time: during the Three Kingdoms period in China
Background: While the main army is away fighting, Zhuge Liang is in Xicheng with only a few soldiers
Beginning
Zhuge Liang receives some bad news: Sima Yi’s powerful army was on its way. There is no time to escape.
Middle
Zhuge Liang orders his men to open the city gates and hide in the city. Then he walks up on the city wall to play his guqin.
End
Sima Yi and his army arrive. When he hears the music from the city wall and sees Zhuge Liang calmly sitting there, he thinks it’s a trap. Sima Yi hesitates. He finally decides to leave with his army. The city is saved.

The empty fort strategy
Once, Zhuge Liang was staying in a small city named Xicheng. He only had a few soldiers with him—the main army was busy fighting elsewhere.
Suddenly, he received some bad news: Sima Yi’s powerful army was on its way. There was no time to escape.
Zhuge Liang ordered his men to open the city gates. Then he told them to hide in the city. Zhuge Liang walked up on the city wall and calmly began to play his guqin.
When Sima Yi arrived, he saw the open gate and heard the music. He hesitated. “Could this be a trap ” he wondered. Sima Yi finally ordered his army to leave.
The city was saved, all thanks to Zhuge Liang’s clever trick.
