October 2015This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Tu Youyou (co-winner),whose research led to the discovery of artemisinin,a crucial new treatment for malaria.Artemisinin has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and has led to improved health for millions of people.Over 200 million people around the world get malaria each year, and about 600,000 die from it.Artemisinin has become a vital part of the treatment for malaria, and is thought to save 100,000 lives a year in Africa alone.Tu Youyou,a committed and patient scientist, was born in Ningbo,China,on 30 December 1930,and graduated from Peking University Medical School in 1955.After she graduated, she worked at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. In 1967,the Chinese government formed a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria, and Tu Youyou was among the first researchers chosen. In the beginning,Tu Youyou went to Hainan, where malaria was more common,to study malaria patients. In 1969,she became the head of the project in Beijing, and decided to review ancient Chinese medical texts to find traditional botanical treatments for the disease. Her team examined over 2,000 old medical texts, and evaluated 280,000 plants for their medical properties. From their research, they discovered and tested 380 distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments that showed promise in the fight against malaria. One medical text from the fourth century suggested using the extract from sweet wormwood to treat a fever.Tu's team tested a collection of dried wormwood leaves but found no effect. They then tried boiling fresh wormwood, and using the liquid obtained from this to treat malaria, but this did not work either.Their project got stuck. However,Tu Youyou would not acknowledge defeat. She analysed the medical texts again, and by chance, she found one sentence suggesting a different way to treat the wormwood. She concluded that boiling the sweet wormwood apparently destroyed its medical properties.Using a lower temperature to draw out the extract, she found a substance that worked. After failing more than 190 times, the team finally succeeded in 1971.Tu Youyou and her team members even insisted on testing the medicine on themselves to make sure that it was safe.Later, the medicine was tested on malaria patients, most of whom recovered. This medicine, which was called artemisinin, soon became a standard treatment for malaria.According to Tu Youyou, the discovery of artemisinin was a team effort.Upon hearing that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize, she said,“The honour is not just mine. There is a team behind me,and all the people of my country. This success proves the great value of traditional Chinese medicine. It is We saw the ship get crushed by the ice.And when the ship sank, our hearts sank with it.Before we abandoned the ship,Shackleton calmly called us together and told us to rescue our most essential supplies—the small boats, our food, the cook stove, candles, clothes, and blankets. This was no time to panic. We were not allowed to take most of our personal belongings, and Shackleton himself threw away all his gold. But to our surprise,he allowed Hussey to keep his banjo.Hussey often plays it to keep our spirits up.We are now camped on the ice and we have been managing to survive, but spring is coming, and the ice will soon begin to melt.20 May,1916We have been struggling for days, but things on Elephant Island are going from bad to worse. We are now crowded together under one of our boats on the rocky shore of this miserable place.Soon after we arrived,Shackleton left us to find help on South Georgia Island,1,320 kilometres away—the voyage was too dangerous and difficult for all of us to make it in our small boats. If Shackleton fails, will we have any hope of rescue No.No navy in the world ever stops at Elephant Island, and no one else knows that we are here.I feel low. It's cold and windy. The island has no plants.Sometimes we are able to catch a seal or a penguin to eat.Otherwise, there is no food.I try to think of happier things:decent food, warm and dry clothes,a cosy bedroom, sunny days, and my mother's face...However,these happy memories are soon interrupted by a sudden cold rush of air.I shouted,“Shut the door!”“Hold on now,Perce.Don't you go turning into another Tom,”came the reply.“We've caught another penguin,so it's penguin soup tonight!”Bless Frank Wild, the kindest man there is after our leader,Ernest Shackleton. How could I become as selfish and bad-tempered as Thomas Orde-Lees!Without Frank and Ernest,we'd all be dead by now.Their genuine concern for others, their perseverance, and their resolve fill me with hope.Perhaps there is a chance we will return home, after all. 5.Why did Blackborow want to join Sir Shackleton's expedition A.He was young.B.He was full of energy.C.This was his dream.D.This was his job.6.How did Blackborow feel when he was accepted at last A.He would be admired.B.He'd get a promotion.C.He would be punished.D.He'd be hated by his parents.7.What happened to the ship A.It's frozen. kid. They tell funny stories and make jokes, and it seems that happiness never leaves them. But with time going on,we come to see these same people as clowns on the outside, but crying on the inside.Comedy from these people comes from a deep pain and sadness in their lives,or out of deep-seated anger they have in the world around them.Look at Richard Pryor.Need I say more?Richard seemed to have everything. For Superman ,he ended up getting more money than Christopher Reeve did,yet he said while he was in his forties that the last truly happy moment he remembered in his life was when he was jumping around in the dirt while he was pretending to be a cowboy at the age of 10.This guy set himself on fire, and he played that for fun while performing live at the Sunset Strip!Comedy was his constant weapon against pain, and he never held anything back. The movie Funny People understands very well this gloomy field in which many comedians have to survive. It stars Adam Sandler as George Simmons,a famous comedian in the movie.Simmons has it all:a beautiful house overlooking the sea,a swimming pool, great cars, and so on.But in his eyes,we see that he is a sad man who has come to truly look down upon himself for what he has become. All the wealth he has collected only serves to separate him from the rest of theworld and it makes him defensive when he is around total strangers who cannot see him as a normal person. But now,he hears from his doctor that he has a terminal(不治的)disease and has only months left to live.Simmons reacts to the news as if someone took away his blood in the heart, and it makes him clearly see just how much he hates his life.So now he has to make every minute count. Then come a series of funny stories.Comedy is just life as it is,isn't it 【語篇解讀】 hated by all the strangers around.√C [細節理解題。根據第三段可知,財富使Simmons和外界隔離了,他對陌生人有一種防衛感,陌生人也沒有把他看作正常人,所以他不開心。故選C。]11.By saying“Comedy is just life as it is,isn't it?”,what does the author mean A.Life is like comedy which will make you happy.B.Comedy comes from the sadness in real life.C.Comedy is as happy as real life.D.Life is full of comedy in reality.√B [推理判斷題。根據文章第一段最后一句“這些人的喜劇來自他們生活中深深的痛苦和悲傷,或者來自他們對周圍世界根深蒂固的憤怒。”并聯系全文可知,文章從一開始就說喜劇的背后是悲痛,并通過兩個具體的例子來論證。故作者通過文章最后這句話來總結他的觀點。故選B。]DWhat we choose to do is up to us.“Life is for living,”according to a well-used expression. That may not be completely true, but there is no harm in dreaming about what we'd like to achieve in our life. Many of us write a list of things we'd like to do before we leave this world—often called a bucket list.Bucket lists have been called“the greatest hits of your life”and have helped some people overcome anxiety which would have stopped them following their dreams. Some of us may choose to write one to fill our life with exciting and new experiences—from skydiving to swimming with sharks—the list is unlimited. This is something the BBC radio programme“All in the Mind”has been looking at.It heard from a blogger called Annette White, who said she made a promise to live her bucket list which“continuously pushes the comfort zone to its limits and beyond it”.Such a list can be exciting and can indeed help you plan your life and give you focus.Creating a bucket list can certainly give us hope, but Clinical psychologist Linda Blair told the BBC that he was“not really in favour of bucket lists, which take you away from the chance to be spontaneous (順其自然的)”.It's probably true that a list can encourage people to follow someone else's idea of the perfect life. But why not at least dream of what we would like to do?Why not reach for the stars, even if we only reach the sky?Whether we want to plan it or just see what happens,we don't know what tomorrow will bring,so maybe we should live for today.【語篇解讀】 本文是一篇議論文。文章主要闡述人們是否需要一份“人生愿望清單”。其實,我們每個人都有一份自己的人生愿望清單,不論這些愿望是否真的都能實現,起碼這份清單一直都在鼓勵我們努力地過好每一天。12.What's the purpose of“Life is for living”mentioned in paragraph 1 A.To provide evidence.B.To make an explanation.C.To make a comparison.D.To draw out the topic to be discussed.√D [推理判斷題。根據第一段可知,作者首先提出“Life is for living”,接著說盡管那并不一定是正確的,但是夢想我們想要實現的東西并沒有什么壞處,很多人會列出人生愿望清單,下文圍繞“人生愿望清單”而展開,所以作者在開頭提及“Life is for living”這句話的目的是引出該文的中心話題——人生愿望清單。故選D。]13.Why is Annette White mentioned by the writer A.To prove what wide popularity bucket lists have.B.To explain the working principle of bucket lists.C.To show the helping functions of bucket lists.D.To tell us the existing problems.√C [推理判斷題。根據第二段中的“It heard from a blogger called Annette White ...Such a list can be exciting and can indeed help you plan your life and give you focus.”可知,本段提及Annette White是為了表明“人生愿望清單”給人們帶來的幫助。故選C。]14.What is Linda Blair's attitude towards bucket lists A.Objective. B.Disapproving.C.Positive. D.Indifferent.√B [觀點態度題。根據文章最后一段中的“...but Clinical psychologist Linda Blair told the BBC that he was‘not really in favour of bucket lists, which take you away from the chance to be spontaneous’.”可知,Linda Blair不贊同“人生愿望清單”。故選B。]15.What does the passage mainly tell us A.Whether we need a bucket list.B.How we can make a bucket list.C.How we can use our bucket list.D.When we ignore our bucket list.√A [主旨大意題。根據第一段中的“Many of us write a list of things we'd like to do before we leave this world—often called a bucket list.”可知,此處提出文章主題——人生愿望清單。再根據最后一段中的“Whether we want to plan it or just see what happens,we don't know what tomorrow will bring,so maybe we should live for today.”可知,這里作者又提出了“也許我們應該活在當下”的觀點。所以,本文主要討論人們需不需要“人生愿望清單”。故選A。]第二節(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。Have you ever wondered why successful people are so successful?Habits astonishing that... 41.when pretty close to spending as much of the day as we could on the court.Dad taught me all sorts of shots—hook shots, foul shots,fade-away jumpers, shots from the corner, tried to send the ball through each other's legs and pass it behind our backs. Each time I felt frustrated and depressed,Dad would invite me to join in a shot game.I didn't know what it was about holding a ball and sending it into the air and waiting for it to drop into the hoop (圈) ,but it felt like magic—all the problems of the world seemed to fade away, and I was the magician.Dad once told me he felt pretty much the same way while playing basketball. It was one of the things Dad and I shared—the magic in basketball.Lately, though,it didn't seem like Dad saw a lot of magic in his job. When he came home each night,it was earlier than when he usually arrived home.I could perceive something different.注意:續寫詞數應為150個左右。With the financial crisis spreading, most of his customers lost their the financial crisis spreading, most of his customers lost their jobs.So did Dad as a matter of course,a wave of helplessness washing over him.He dragged himself back home with heavy steps. At the sight of the worried expression on his face,I fell apart inside. What could I do to stop him sinking into a dark abyss The ball held in my hands sparked like an inspiration.“Want to join in a shot game,Dad?”I asked, knowing how much he loved basketball and thinking maybe it might cheer him up.“Sure,”he said, opening his eyes and smiling a weary smile.I bounce-passed the ball to him,and Dad caught it naturally. He held the ball in both hands between his knees, broke through my defence skillfully, and shot at the basket. It was perfectly measured so that the ball dropped clearly through the hoop.“Whoa, what a shot!”I cheered and clapped.Dad's long-lost smile finally came back, with his face glowing brilliantly like sunshine.Magically,it was shooting baskets with me that helped him forget his worries in job for a short time and it was the warmth of family that revived him through hardship.謝 謝! 展開更多...... 收起↑ 資源列表 Unit 2 Period 7 單元回顧 默寫背誦(Onwards and upwards).docx Unit 2 Period 7 單元回顧
