Four of the World's Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By flood, typhoon, or earthquake, these events have collectively taken millions of human lives.
Yangtze River Flood
The major flood of 1931 covered tens of thousands of square miles, flooding rice fields and many cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan. The flood affected more than 50 million people. Government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated (估計(jì)) that about 3.7 million people died in this disaster.
Typhoon Nina
Typhoon Nina struck Henan Province of China in August 1975. The typhoon caused a serious dam (水壩) failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured. According to reports, at least 26,000 people died in the floods. About 145,000 people died from diseases caused by water pollution and famine (饑荒). The number of people affected by the disaster was more than 10,000,000.
Kashmir Earthquake
On October 8, 2005, a disastrous earthquake struck the Kashmir region. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.6, followed by many aftershocks, landslides, and falling rocks. The seriousness of the damage and the high number of deaths were worsened by poor construction (建筑) in the affected areas. In Kashmir at least 79,000 people were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings broke down.
Haitian Earthquake
At the beginning of 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.0 and was followed by aftershocks that registered magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.5.Another aftershock of magnitude 5.9 struck on January 20. Maggie, a girl of thirteen years old, lived on the west coast of the United States. She had never experienced an earthquake before; she only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was common at her school. Her family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster.
One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.
After finishing her homework, Maggie felt a little hungry, so she went to the kitchen to find something to eat: Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening,__and Maggie hugged herself in fear.
After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. And there was the smell of natural gas in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve was and how to turn it off. Dad had ever shown her before.
Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was then almost unrecognizable. Walls had fallen down and many things in the room were in a mess. As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the steps. Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement.
While placing her feet firmly on the floor, Maggie felt a sudden pain as a large wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconscious onto a pile of boxes. An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her. She was happy that she was still alive!
24.What can we infer from the first paragraph?( )
A.Earthquakes are the main natural disasters in the US.

D.She had experienced an earthquake before.
27.What does the passage mainly talk about?( )
A.A story of a girl in an earthquake.
B.The importance of preparing for an earthquake.
C.The ways to escape from an earthquake.
D.The danger of an earthquake.
C
Humans can race to get out of a hurricane's path. Some animals can sense a hurricane coming and leave quickly, but there are animals that can't simply get out of the way. Here are the various effects of hurricanes on animals.
Birds may be able to sense air pressure and other changes in the environment, which encourages them to get out of harm's way. Some birds will even speed up their migration (遷徙) leaving earlier than usual if a serious hurricane is approaching. However, strong winds can push birds hundreds of miles away from their home. Young or weak birds can become separated from the rest of their group and often have difficulty making it home.
Fish can also be affected. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, about 184 million fish died in south Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin alone. Strong winds blew leaves off trees, blowing them into wetlands. The rotting organic material led to extremely low levels of oxygen in the water, killing the fish. Some fish will often find sheltered areas during hurricanes, but they're not always safe. Dolphins have occasionally been blown to shore during big hurricanes.
There are many other dangers that come with hurricane-related water. Sharp rise of saltwater onshore can harm wildlife and plants that live in the freshwater and can't bear the salt content. Heavy rain can also affect the balance of fresh and salt water in some areas, harming the creatures that live in them.
Many animals lose their regular food supply when a hurricane arrives, as strong winds and rains destroy trees of fruits, nuts and berries. During Hurricane Andrew, about one-quarter of Louisiana's public oyster seed grounds were destroyed. Because the oysters were an important food source for some birds on Louisiana's barrier Islands, the birds suffered mass death as a direct result of the hurricane.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?(
A.Birds are adapting to a changing climate.
B.Birds can sense the coming of a hurricane.
C.Birds migrate at certain times of every year.
D.Birds' habitats are destroyed by hurricanes.
29.What causes fish in south Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin to die after Hurricane Andrew in 1992?( )
A.Poisonous leaves.
B.Air pollution.
C.A lack of oxygen.
D.The loss of shelters.
30.What could be the effect of hurricane related water?( )
A.Ocean ecosystem is destroyed.
B.Sea salt production is reduced.
C.Many animals move away from their habitats.
D.There would be less fresh water on the earth.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?( )
A.Animals suffer more than humans during a hurricane
B.What happens to animals during a hurricane
C.Why do animals migrate earlier than usual
D.Animals might face serious threats
D
According to related new research, tropical cyclones (熱帶氣旋), ranging from hurricanes to typhoons, are moving more slowly across the planet than they did years ago, meaning that they get more destructive power and last longer.
It may seem like a good thing that cyclones move at a slower speed, but in fact it's quite the opposite. Although the cyclones are moving slower across the ground, they still get high wind speeds inside, which on the contrary makes hard rains stay longer over communities.
“Nothing good comes out of a slowing storm,” says James Kossin, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Center for Weather and Climate in Madison, Wisconsin. “It can increase storm surge. It can increase the amount of time when structures suffer from strong wind. And it increases rainfall.”
According to Kossin's findings, changing storm patterns are causing greater destruction in another way. He mentioned that the speed of global tropical cyclones slowed by an average of 10 percent from 1949 to 2016. The speed of the storms slowed even more as they made landfall in some areas. In the western North Pacific, it dropped by nearly a third. That means there will be more time for a storm with much moisture (水汽) to give off more of it in each area.
Basing his research on the details of nearly 70 years' storms, Kossin did not try to determine the cause of the slowdown. Even so, the shift is, exactly as he and other cyclone experts said, the expected result of climate change.
Kossin's work was considered to be “important and new” and “extremely valuable” by Christina Patricola, a scientist with the Climate and Ecosystem Sciences Division of California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
It is Kossin's hope that a model showing which communities are likely to be at the highest risk could be developed by scientists. Given that in some regions, the storms are moving poleward and gaining in strength as well, places not normally passed by could be affected by unusually heavy rainfall as a result. “These are not good things to be combining,” he says.
32.Why are cyclones moving more slowly more destructive?( )
A.They get higher wind speeds inside.
B.They cause more serious climate change.
C.They move poleward and affect more areas.
D.They make rains and winds stay longer in a place.
33.What has Kossin found about the western North Pacific?( )
A.It has much wetter air than other areas.
B.The speed of storms there slows more.
C.The storms there cause greater damage.
D.It has higher risk of being hit by storms.
34.Why does the author quote Christina Patricola's words?( )
A.To show Kossin's work has been recognized.
B.To explain the importance of studying storms.
C.To attract more attention to research on storms.
D.To stress Kossin's authority in the scientific filed.
35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?( )
A.Health. B.Science.
C.Education. D.Entertainment.

Staying Safe in a Vehicle
Wildfires are common in dry, hot climates, but they can happen anywhere. 36(____) If you ever find yourself facing the threat of a wildfire, it's important to know what to do to ensure that you and your family remain safe in a vehicle.
Ensure that you can breathe. Once you're in a car, you'll need to ensure that the car is safely sealed from the smoke surrounding you. 37(____)
Drive if you can. If the vehicle runs and you're capable of driving it, then do so. But it's important to drive slowly and keep your headlights on, so that you can see your surroundings and anyone else on the road can see you. 38(____) If the smoke is too thick to see, it may be safer to park and wait it out.
Remain in the vehicle. If the smoke is too thick to see the road, or if you cannot drive the car for any reason, you should remain in the vehicle. 39(____) You will be more likely to be injured or killed by leaving the vehicle than you would be if you remained inside.
Know what to expect. 40(____) Just remember that no matter what happens, if the fire surrounds the car you should not leave the vehicle. The temperature inside the vehicle will increase considerably. Don't worry—it's still safer inside the vehicle than outside.
A.Don't drive through heavy traffic.
B.Don't drive through heavy smoke.
C.You need to break a window to enter the vehicle.
D.It's important to know what to expect so that you do not panic.
E.Most wildfires start small, often from human causes, but spread very quickly.
F.This is crucial, since you will otherwise risk passing out from carbon monoxide (一氧化碳).
G.You can lie down on the floor of the vehicle and cover yourself with a blanket or coat, if possible.

My sister and I boarded a small plane together with 40 other passengers. Unluckily, while flying over the mountains, the plane met with violent airflow. Losing control suddenly, it hit an unknown mountain top. The crash killed a few passengers immediately, leaving many injured including my sister. In order to add a slight chance of being found, we waited in the open, as opposed to waiting in the plane, even though it was freezing cold. At night, we slept side by side to keep ourselves warm. We melted snow into water to drink. We knew our food could not last us long, sticking to the hope that we would be rescued soon.
We knew from the radio that the outside world was trying to look for the missing aircraft. However, the aircraft was white and blended (混合) in with the snow, making it impossible to be seen for helicopters from the sky. Later, our hope was dead when we found out through our radio that the rescue effort ended. Most of us were very depressed though it was no use.
Now climbing over the mountains ourselves to search for help seemed to be our only chance of survival. Although the crash site was an awful place, with urine (尿) everywhere and smelling of death, I still wished to stay there. But my sister would give in to her injuries soon if we were not rescued. Thus, together with two other people, Canossa and Vaginitis, I decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. Carrying some food and water, we started our journey.
注意:
1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150個左右;
2.請按如下格式在相應(yīng)位置作答。
The mountain we were to challenge was one with slopes so steep (陡峭的) that it would scare away a team of expert climbers. Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain.

On June 12th, Peter had a surprise when he woke up in the morning. He found that the floor of his room was flooded. When he looked out of the window, he saw many cars upside down in the street. It was a sad day for Peter's hometown, which is a mountain city. In the twenty four hours up to noon, nearly seventeen inches of rain fell. Usually about sixteen inches of rainfall in the whole month of June. Roads in the high area were washed away. Tons of mud and rocks crashed down on the houses below. Sixty four people died in the flood and more than 2,500 people lost their homes. For some time after the flood, helicopters continued to rescue people.
There has been debate about the total number of deaths caused by this earthquake, but estimates suggest that about 200,000300,000 people died. Hundreds of thousands more were forced to leave their homes.

答案:D
解析:細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段中的“Although the cyclones ... stay longer over communities.”可知,氣旋移動的速度慢,但里面的風(fēng)速仍然很高,使強(qiáng)降雨在社區(qū)上空停留的時間更長,破壞力更大。故選D。

1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150個左右;

The mountain we were to challenge was one with slopes so steep (陡峭的) that it would scare away a team of expert climbers. We met with various difficulties including cold weather and dangerous mountain roads. Besides, food and water became less and less. Hungry and tired, what's worse, two of us were injured on the way, which made our climbing more difficult and last longer time. We endured exhaustion and starvation but at last we reached the top of the mountain. To our horror, we found nothing.
Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain. Again we started making our way down the mountain. Eventually, at the base of the mountain we were helped by a local farmer who called the police for help. After the rescue team arrived, I then guided them via a helicopter to the crash site. Through the efforts of all the people, we were rescued. Finally, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who had gone through the mess and odds and had endured the cruel days.

There has been debate about the total number of deaths caused by this earthquake, but estimates suggest that about 200,000 300,000 people died. Hundreds of thousands more were forced to leave their homes.

The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening, and Maggie hugged herself in fear.

閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。

答案
Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain. Again we started making our way down the mountain. Eventually, at the base of the mountain we were helped by a local farmer who called the police for help. After the rescue team arrived, I then guided them via a helicopter to the crash site. Through the efforts of all the people, we were rescued. Finally, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who had gone through the mess and odds and had endured the cruel days.
