Scientists have created the first lab-grown coffee, which they say “smells and tastes like the real thing”. The Finland-based researchers used a process called cellular agriculture, which includes taking out cells from a small plant or animal sample (樣本). In the latest example of lab-grown options, cell samples were taken from Arabica, a popular coffee plant that makes up 56 per cent of global production. With lab-grown coffee, the researchers say that they can deal with problems facing the global coffee industry, such as a need for clearing space for coffee plants to keep up with an increasing need for the drink worldwide.
The research is being conducted at VTT Technical Research Centre based in Espoo, Finland—the country that drinks the most coffee per person. “The process uses real coffee plant cells,” Dr Heiko Rischer, head of plant biotechnology at Finland's VTT research center, said. “At first, a cell culture (細胞培養) is started from a plant part, for example, a leaf. The formed cells reproduced on a specific nutrient medium. In the end, the cells are transported to a bioreactor from which the biomass (生物量) is then harvested. The cells are dried and roasted then coffee can be brewed.”
The first collection produced by VTT in their laboratory smells and tastes like traditional coffee, according to the results of a “sensory analysis (感官分析)”. After drinking a cup, Dr Rischer said, “There is a surprisingly full smell. In terms of smell and taste, our trained sensory judgement and analytical examination has found the coffee bears similarity to ordinary coffee,” he said. “The experience of drinking the very first cup was exciting.”
The idea that coffee cells could be used to make coffee was presented back in 1974 by plant scientist P. M. Townsley. But the VTT scientists have put the theory into practice with their lab-grown brew, which they think could hit the market.
24.What might be one of the causes of creating lab-grown coffee
A.There exists an increasing demand market of coffee.
B.People in Finland drink the most amount of coffee.
C.Dr Heiko has been devoted to genetically engineering.
D.The idea is based on a theory proving to be practical.
25.What does the underline word “brewed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Collected. B.Designed.
C.Produced. D.Measured.
26.What can be inferred according to Dr Rischer
A.Lab-grown coffee is made from leaves.
B.Lab-grown coffee can satisfy the taste of most people.
C.Lab-grown coffee makes people who drink it more excited.
D.Lab-grown coffee tastes and smells better than ordinary coffee.
27.What is the main purpose of this article
A.To praise scientists sticking with creation.
B.To present a research on man-made coffee.
C.To introduce a new kind of Arabica coffee.
D.To solve coffee shortage troubling people.

Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels. However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So, consumers shouldn't assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.”
For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that “whether you buy organic food or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.
28.What does the new research question
A.Whether organic food should replace traditional food.
B.Whether organic food has been overpriced by farmers.
C.Whether organic food is grown with less harmful chemicals.
D.Whether organic food is really more nutritious and healthier.
29.What did Smith-Spangler and her colleagues find
A.Organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease.
B.Traditional food was grown with more natural methods.
C.Both organic and traditional food they examined were safe.
D.There was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food.
30.Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage
A.Organic chicken and pork.
B.Organic milk and chicken.
C.Traditional chicken and pork.
D.Traditional fruit and vegetables.
31.What is the author's attitude toward organic food
A.Doubtful. B.Neutral.
C.Unconcerned. D.Approving.

Mr Asada is just one of many growers in Shizuoka, one of Japan's largest wasabi growing (山葵種植) regions, who must face rising challenges from global warming and the effect of untended forests. Already, these hazards have gradually weakened the centuries old culture of wasabi in the area and damaged the future of one of the area's most important agricultural products and its tourism business.
Over the last decade, the number of wasabi produced in Shizuoka has dropped by close to 55 percent, according to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The wasabi that comes in tubes and packets is actually a mixture of wasabi and horseradish (辣根)—or includes no wasabi at all. These days, almost only expensive restaurants have access to fresh wasabi, giving their customers a chance to experience the unique flavor and traditional culture of wasabi.
Wasabi plants grow up in spring water that flows down from the mountains, helping to improve their flavor and sweetness. Over time, local growers say, the spring water has worsened in quality due to a large number of cypress trees which grow like crazy in the untended forests.
Global warming has upset the balance even further. The delicate wasabi plants, which take more than a year to be full grown, do best in conditions no higher than about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. In recent years, heat waves in Japan have regularly pushed temperatures into the 90 degrees and even above 100 degrees, causing more stems to rot.
Government researchers and local growers have started to experiment with crossbreeding in an effort to develop better wasabi varieties that will grow strong even in the rising heat. The challenge is that, unlike with other crops such as cucumbers or tomatoes, getting seeds and growing seedlings from wasabi requires advanced technology. Most growers rely on specialized companies to clone seedlings in labs and greenhouses. Crossbreeding new varieties needs difficult pollination (授粉) efforts, and most of all time.
32.What's the meaning of the underlined word “hazards” in Paragraph 1
A.Signals. B.Adventures.
C.Threats. D.Measures.
33.What can we learn about wasabi according to the text
A.It is popular in Japan.
B.It likes high temperature.
C.It is damaged by the cypress trees.
D.It will develop into new species very soon.
34.How do researchers help to grow wasabi in Japan
A.They attempt to get seeds from wasabi.
B.They make efforts to develop species standing the heat.
C.They depend on companies to clone seedlings.
D.They help complete the process of pollination.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Wasabi under severe threats
B.Global warming risks wasabi
C.Wasabi—a popular food choice
D.Researchers and growers are saving wasabi

Sumiko worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. They made their living by selling the produce from their garden at the market. Each day, Sumiko carefully watered plants and pretended they were beautiful chrysanthemums (菊花), like Mrs Higaki's prize flowers. In her heart, she wanted to grow chrysanthemums.
“Foolish girl!” her mother lectured. “Flowers can't be eaten!”
“But Mum, people buy flowers.”
“City people. No one in our poor village wastes money.”
Sumiko knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs Higaki. Every year she won first prize at the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival. Many people whispered that Mrs Higaki used magic to grow her chrysanthemums. How else could she win first prize twenty years in a row
Sumiko admired Mrs Higaki. If she could sell flowers like Mrs Higaki, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But chrysanthemums were expensive to start, and Sumiko could only dream about growing them.
One day, Sumiko visited Mrs Higaki's garden. “Mrs Higaki, I wish I could grow beautiful chrysanthemums and win a prize like you,” said Sumiko.
“You! Win a prize growing flowers?” Mrs Higaki laughed. “Do you know what's required to grow such flowers The secret to growing them has been passed down to me from past generations of my family. And you—a child—believe you can compete against me Stick to vegetables, child. Leave flowers to those who know the secret of flowers.”
Mrs Higaki returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Sumiko's face. Then she pulled up a plant.
“What's that?” Sumiko asked.
“A plant in poor condition—a waste of my time,” Mrs Higaki said, throwing the plant into the field beside the garden.
注意:
1.續寫詞數應為150個左右;
2.請按如下格式在相應位置作答。

Four scientists have won the 2016 World Food Prize. The scientists are from the global agricultural research group, the International Potato Center. They won the prize for enriching sweet potatoes. This has resulted in health benefits for millions of people across the world. The scientists developed a way to grow sweet potatoes that have extra amounts of Vitamin A in them. More Vitamin A means the sweet potato contains extra nutrition. One researcher said it was difficult to get farmers to help him with his work. Many farmers did not think it was a good idea. The researcher said: “They told me it was a bad idea. Their job was to increase output and reduce poverty; it wasn't to improve nutrition.” The sweet potato could change the lives of many people across the globe. A lack of Vitamin A is one of the most harmful examples of lacking nutrition. Jan Low, from the International Potato Center, said the prize-winning sweet potatoes could make a big difference in making sure that hungry people get enough Vitamin A.She hopes more scientists will focus on increasing nutrition in vegetables.

Dear fellow students,
I am honored to stand here to deliver a speech today. My theme is “On the importance of hands on agricultural labor course”.
First and foremost, some students believe that there are many benefits to attend hands on agricultural courses, which can make them know more about agriculture and experience the hardships of farmers' labor. What's more, the hands on agricultural course will certainly improve students' awareness of cherishing food.
Not only can learning agricultural courses offer an alternative to busy school life, but also it allows students to gain direct labor experience and gradually establish a correct value of agricultural labor.
Thank you for your listening.
第二節(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.續寫詞數應為150個左右;
2.請按如下格式在相應位置作答。
Sumiko smiled. She had an idea. Sumiko got up early on the morning of the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival.

Sumiko smiled. She had an idea. She asked for Mrs Higaki's permission to have that plant, dashed back home, and grew it behind the cottage. She leaned close to the hanging leaves and whispered, “Grow, little flower. You don't have to win a prize. Just grow.” She took care of her plant every morning and evening. “You are my beautiful plant,” Sumiko would sing softly, as she weeded and watered it. “Someday, you will bloom prettier than any flower at the festival.” Each time Sumiko visited her little plant, it looked greener and taller. Time seemed to fly by as the festival neared.
Sumiko got up early on the morning of the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival. When Sumiko visited her plant again, she screamed with delight. Her plant was in full bloom! It was the most beautiful rainbow chrysanthemums Sumiko had ever seen. Mrs Higaki, who was passing by with flowers for the festival, stopped to see what the excitement was. Her mouth dropped open seeing the brilliant chrysanthemums. She never thought that the weak plant she threw away should have grown to be so remarkable. “It's plain to see you will win a prize this year,” Mrs Higaki sighed. And off they went to the festival. Finally, Sumiko's chrysanthemums won first prize as Mrs Higaki had predicted.

18.Why did sweet potato scientists win the World Food Prize
A.Because they discovered a new potato.
B.Because they enriched sweet potatoes.
C.Because they shortened its growth time.
19.What's the impact of the achievement
A.Changing lives of people. B.Changing growing ways.

篇章導讀:本文是一篇議論文。文章通過引用專家的調查結果證實有機食品并未比傳統食品有更多的營養成分。
28.What does the new research question
A.Whether organic food should replace traditional food.
B.Whether organic food has been overpriced by farmers.
C.Whether organic food is grown with less harmful chemicals.
D.Whether organic food is really more nutritious and healthier.
解析:細節理解題。根據第一段中的“A study led by researchers ... disease-causing bacteria, either.”可知,新研究就有機食物是否更營養和更健康提出質疑。故選D。
29.What did Smith-Spangler and her colleagues find
A.Organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease.
B.Traditional food was grown with more natural methods.
C.Both organic and traditional food they examined were safe.
D.There was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food.
解析:推理判斷題。根據第四段中的“Neither organic ... safety standards.”可推知,Smith-Spangler(史密斯—斯班格勒)和她的同事發現他們檢測的有機食品和傳統食品都是安全的。故選C。

注意:
1.續寫詞數應為150個左右;
2.請按如下格式在相應位置作答。
Sumiko smiled. She had an idea. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
