You're playing soccer with your friends. One of them kicks you the ball and you run for it. You trip. You fly through the air. You land—hard, right on your face! The next moment, you're in the nurse's office. Your bleeding nose is being checked by laser sensors (激光傳感器) coming out of a ... robot Has the nurse's office been taken over by sci fi aliens (外星人) from outer space No. You've just been pushed forward 15 years into the future. And it's a future that Susan Epstein, a computer science professor who teaches artificial intelligence, is really excited to think about. “I am crazy about this kind of thing! You could go up to the robot, put your nose in, and the machine would decide whether you needed to be treated, and how.”Aside from being cool, an AI nurse has other advantages. It doesn't need to take vacations. It doesn't need to get paid a salary. And it might figure out what's wrong with your nose faster than a human would. There are all kinds of ways that AI could be used to help make us healthier and researchers are studying how to use AI to diagnose (診斷) lung disease, cancer, and more. Our robot nurse isn't meant to completely take the place of humans, though. “It would work with real, live nurses and doctors,” says Epstein, “there are things humans are good at, like building trust among members of our own species or comforting someone who's hurt or sick. A big part of medicine is the relationship between a doctor and a patient.”Epstein points out that AI programs will never be perfect—no matter how much we might want them to be. But if AI can diagnose a deadly disease more precisely even 10 percent of the time, think of how many lives it could save. “Besides,” says Epstein, “I think there are probably patients who might prefer to have a machine for a doctor!” Would you? 1.What's the function of Para. 1 A.To introduce a scientific study.B.To lead to the topic of the text.C.To describe an experience of the writer.D.To give an example to support an argument. 根據第一段中的“You fly through the air ... from outer space?(你在空中飛翔。你迎面重重地著地!下一秒,你就在護士辦公室了。你流血的鼻子正在接受激光傳感器的檢查。機器人嗎?護士辦公室是不是被來自外太空的科幻外星人占領了?)”和第二段中的“You could go up to the robot ... be treated, and how.(你可以走到機器人面前,把鼻子伸進去,機器就會決定你是否需要治療,以及如何治療。)” B。2.What can be inferred from Epstein's words in Para. 4 A.Humans are better at treating patients than AI doctors.B.AI doctors alone can cure patients of most of the diseases.C.Patients' trust in doctors may affect their treatments positively.D.Patients may receive as much comfort from AI doctors as from humans. C。3.What is true about AI doctors and nurses according to the text A.They are better at trust building.B.They will take over humans.C.Their biggest strength is being cool.D.They are life saving if properly used. D。4.What's Epstein's attitude towards AI doctors and nurses A.Negative. B.Favorable.C.Doubtful. D.Unclear. BVirtual (虛擬的) reality (VR) was just an idea in the past but now it is becoming more and more a reality. Researchers have predictions that virtual reality will make a great difference to our society. In the same way that the smartphone changed our lives, virtual reality may be set to do the same.Virtual reality changes how we view technology. Until now technology has always been something that we have viewed but never been truly immersed in (沉浸其中). Virtual reality has the power to change that. There will come a time when we sit on a VR chair or step inside a VR room, put on a VR device, and enter a totally different world. The technology is largely available already, so with further advances taking place we could be about to enter entirely different worlds.Today the obvious application of virtual reality is gaming but there are many more applications as well. In business, virtual reality could be used to improve communications. Many companies have to pay a lot for sending their team to different places. As worldwide business continues, it is increasingly important for teams in different areas of the world to work together. Although the video meeting solutions have been a success, they are just not as good as the real thing. Virtual reality can offer an experience as good as the real thing without any of the expense of travel. While the virtual reality technology is still being developed we are not far away from a truly immersive experience. Within the next ten years, a solution will be in place, which will be so believable that people will be unable to tell the difference between it and reality. In time the cost will reduce as well, making it possible to have a VR experience in every home and business. 5.Why is the smartphone mentioned in the first paragraph A.To show the popularity of virtual reality.B.To praise the development of virtual reality.C.To state people's anxieties in terms of virtual reality.D.To explain the influence of virtual reality on people's lives. 根據第一段中的“Researchers have predictions ... to do the same. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn't locate you Maybe then a human-seeking drone wouldn't be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at Germany's Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, who've built a drone to find people by detecting human screams.“The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires,” said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. “They could hover over an area that rescue crews have difficulty getting to and locate exactly where people may be trapped.”Locating people by sound presents its share of challenges. An auditory system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind. It might also need to recognize patterns associated with kicking, clapping or other ways people try to get the attention of rescue teams.Engineers took those situations into account when building out their concept drone. They recorded themselves screaming, tapping and creating other noises that might be a sign of people in trouble. Then, they analyzed each sound frequency to find common signatures and used those to train artificial intelligence software. They also worked to remove the noise created by the drone and other environmental sounds.Once the software part was complete, the team placed tiny digital microphones under the drone and used signal processing techniques that enabled them to track where human noises are coming from. The microphones also enhanced the volume and clarity of the speech. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim's location within a few seconds of picking up sound.Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. The idea is to pick up noises from hundreds of meters away, Varela said. In the real world, victim's location data might one day be sent wirelessly to emergency crews carrying a tablet.篇章導讀:本文是一篇說明文。文章主要介紹了一種通過探測人的尖叫來尋找人的無人機。1.What is the advantage of the human-seeking drone A.Its high speed of flying.B.Its long working hours.C.Its quick response to screams.D.Its easy access to disaster scene.答案:D解析:細節理解題。根據第二段中的“They could hover ... may be trapped.(它們可以在救援人員難以到達的區域上空盤旋,并準確定位人們可能被困的地方。)”可知,這種尋人無人機的優勢是比較容易進入到災難發生地。故選D。2.What can the auditory system do A.Recognize human cries.B.Pick up sounds from far away.C.Send victim's location data to a tablet.D.Improve the quality of human screams.答案:A解析:細節理解題。根據第三段中的“An auditory system ... animal calls and wind.(聽覺系統需要將人類的尖叫聲與自然界經常發生的聲音(如動物的叫聲和風聲)區分開來。)”可知,聽覺系統能識別人的尖叫聲。故選A。3.What does the underlined word “signatures” in Paragraph 4 means A.Effects. A big part of medicine is the relationship between a doctor and a patient.”篇章導讀:本文是一篇說明文。文章主要介紹了未來機器人護士和醫生的優點。Epstein points out that AI programs will never be perfect—no matter how much we might want them to be. But if AI can diagnose a deadly disease more precisely even 10 percent of the time, think of how many lives it could save. “Besides,” says Epstein, “I think there are probably patients who might prefer to have a machine for a doctor!” Would you?1.What's the function of Para. 1 A.To introduce a scientific study.B.To lead to the topic of the text.C.To describe an experience of the writer.D.To give an example to support an argument.解析:推理判斷題。根據第一段中的“You fly through the air ... from outer space?(你在空中飛翔。你迎面重重地著地!下一秒,你就在護士辦公室了。你流血的鼻子正在接受激光傳感器的檢查。機器人嗎?護士辦公室是不是被來自外太空的科幻外星人占領了?)”和第二段中的“You could go up to the robot ... be treated, and how.(你可以走到機器人面前,把鼻子伸進去,機器就會決定你是否需要治療,以及如何治療。)”可推知,第一段引出文章的主題,即未來的機器人護士。故選B。2.What can be inferred from Epstein's words in Para. 4 A.Humans are better at treating patients than AI doctors.B.AI doctors alone can cure patients of most of the diseases.C.Patients' trust in doctors may affect their treatments positively.D.Patients may receive as much comfort from AI doctors as from humans.解析:推理判斷題。根據第四段中的“It would work with real ... a doctor and a patient.(Epstein (愛普斯坦)說:‘它將與真實的護士和醫生一起工作,人類擅長的事情有很多,比如在我們自己的物種成員之間建立信任,或者安慰受傷或生病的人。醫學的很大一部分是醫患關系。’)”可推知,患者對醫生的信任可能會對他們的治療產生積極的影響。故選C。3.What is true about AI doctors and nurses according to the text A.They are better at trust building.B.They will take over humans.C.Their biggest strength is being cool.D.They are life saving if properly used.解析:細節理解題。根據最后一段中的“But if AI can ... it could save.(但如果人工智能能夠更準確地診斷出一種致命疾病,哪怕只多10%的準確率,想想它能拯救多少生命吧。)”可知,如果使用得當,人工智能醫生和護士可以挽救生命。故選D。4.What's Epstein's attitude towards AI doctors and nurses A.Negative.B.Favorable.C.Doubtful.D.Unclear.解析:推理判斷題。通讀全文,尤其是根據最后一段中的“‘Besides,’ says Epstein ... Would you?(‘此外,’Epstein說,‘我認為可能有些病人更愿意讓醫生用機器!’你會嗎?)”可推知,Epstein對人工智能醫生和護士的態度是贊許的。故選B。BVirtual (虛擬的) reality (VR) was just an idea in the past but now it is becoming more and more a reality. Virtual reality can offer an experience as good as the real thing without any of the expense of travel.篇章導讀:本文是一篇說明文。文章主要介紹了虛擬現實技術的現狀及其對未來社會可能產生的影響,將其與過去的技術以及當前的應用進行對比,并展望了其未來的發展及應用。While the virtual reality technology is still being developed we are not far away from a truly immersive experience. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn't locate you Maybe then a human-seeking drone wouldn't be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at Germany's Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, who've built a drone to find people by detecting human screams.精深閱讀“The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires,” said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim's location within a few seconds of picking up sound.篇章導讀:本文是一篇說明文。文章主要介紹了一種通過探測人的尖叫來尋找人的無人機。Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. The idea is to pick up noises from hundreds of meters away, Varela said.
