Ⅱ 閱讀
The Olympic spirit is about a lot more than winning medals and setting records. Just look at the story of swimmer Eric Moussambani.
The Equatoguinean found his passion for swimming shortly after high school. Unfortunately, football is far and away the most popular sport in Moussambani's home country. Living in such a football-crazed country, it was difficult for Moussambani to find a place to train consistently (持續(xù)地). Eventually, he found a 13-meter-sized hotel pool that he only had access to three hours a week. On days he could not use the pool, he trained in rivers.
After about eight months of swimming, he gained entry into the 2000 Summer Olympics through a program where the International Olympic Committee gave wild cards to developing nations to promote their sport further. In Sydney, Moussambani saw an Olympic-sized swimming pool for the first time, which was so big that Moussambani said he was “so scared” to compete in it.
The day of the 100m freestyle came. Moussambani made an energetic start in the first 50 meters, but in the final half of the race, he struggled to stay afloat (漂浮著), so much so that those on the sidelines considered jumping in and helping him out of the water. “It was then that I heard the crowd screaming and shouting, encouraging me to ‘Go, go, go.’ It gave me the strength to finish,” Moussambani said.
Moussambani finished the race with a time of 1:52.72, the slowest recorded time in Olympic history, but the fans did not care, cheering him as if he had broken the world record. “This is what the Olympics are all about,” a commentator said. “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part. The essential thing in life is not defeating others, but fighting well,” he said.
Moussambani serves as the national swim team coach for Equatorial Guinea now. Gone are the days when Equatoguinean swimmers needed to train in open water. They now have two Olympic-sized swimming pools. Moussambani hopes to grow the sport in his country.

The Person I Admire Most
When it comes to the person I admire most, Madam Curie pops up in my mind instantly.
I admire Madam Curie most, the greatest woman chemist in the world, who not only discovered radium, but also devoted her discovery to saving lots of injured soldiers during the First World War. Besides, Madam Curie was not interested in fame or wealth at all, although she won the Nobel Prize twice.
In my opinion, Madam Curie is selfless, generous and active, who deeply influences me. I believe, I am obliged to learn from her.
 讀后續(xù)寫
閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Every night as the whole family fell asleep, Catalina would slide from home to the Cerro Tololo observatory (天文臺). Papa was the mechanic (修理工) of the observatory, but during the day Papa would not allow her to get closer to the telescopes there. Only at night, Catalina was allowed in with the permission of the night staff.
Catalina loved helping to service the grand telescopes, the eyes that looked out into the universe. She wanted badly to be an astronomer someday. Adults never took her dream seriously. Even her father laughed, “Maybe you'll be hired to clean the offices.”
One day in library, Catalina was reading a plant journal when she stopped at the picture of an unusual white flower. “It's called wild carrot.” A Spanish astronomer, who she saw several times in the observatory, stood behind her. “Pretty, isn't it I've always liked that flower, because it looks like a galaxy.”
“A spiral galaxy (漩渦星系),” she whispered. Blond eyebrows climbed the scientist's forehead. “Indeed. And what is your name, young lady?” he asked.
“I'm Catalina Solis.”
“Eduardo Solis's daughter The mechanic?”
“Yes.” She gave a look at him. “I want to be an astronomer when I grow up.”
He laughed kindly, no longer meeting her eyes, and patted her on the shoulder. “Yes, of course, my dear. Work hard in school, and it could happen.”
One evening, Catalina eye scanned the top of the observatory as usual. Suddenly she noticed the angle of the one-meter telescope was unusual. The telescope was pointed down, lower than she had ever seen it. Catalina learned from Papa how dangerous it would be. If left like it was, the telescope would move past its limit and be damaged. So without hesitation she got inside the observatory.
注意:
1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150個左右;
2.請按如下格式在相應(yīng)位置作答。
She saw the Spanish scientist buried in work there.
篇章導(dǎo)讀:本文是一篇記敘文。文章講述了奧運會100米自由泳項目世界最慢記錄的創(chuàng)造者——Eric Moussambani(埃里克·莫桑巴尼)鼓舞人心的故事。
1.Why did Moussambani fail to get proper swimming training
A.Swimming was not taken seriously in his country.
B.Swimming in rivers appealed to him.
C.He was busy with his schoolwork.
D.He could not afford it.
故選A。
2.How did Moussambani do in the race
A.He was too scared to swim.
B.He quit at the first sign of trouble.
C.He finished with great difficulty.
D.He was pulled out of the water halfway.
解析:細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段中的“he struggled to stay afloat (漂浮著)”和“It gave me the strength to finish”可知,他艱難地完成了比賽。故選C。
3.What did the commentator think of Moussambani
A.He showed the Olympic spirit.
B.He was a talented swimmer.
C.He disappointed his fans.
D.He could have fought better.
解析:推理判斷題。根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中評論員所說的“The most important ... but fighting well”可知,Moussambani在奧運會中的表現(xiàn)正是“重在參與”的最好體現(xiàn)。由此可推知,在這位評論員看來,Moussambani展示了奧運精神。故選A。
4.What does Moussambani wish to do now
A.Build some Olympic-sized swimming pools.
B.Promote swimming in his country.
C.Coach the national swim team.
D.Win an Olympic medal.

讀后續(xù)寫

She saw the Spanish scientist buried in work there. Catalina walked over to him and greeted him with a smile. To her surprise, he handed her a notebook and asked, “Would you like to help me record the data from the telescope?” Overwhelmed by excitement, Catalina nodded and began to assist the astronomer. The night passed quickly as they worked together, recording and analyzing the observations. Catalina couldn't believe that she was working with a real astronomer, contributing to the scientific research she had always dreamed of.
The scientist's words meant a lot to her. “Work hard in school, and it could happen.” Catalina took these words to heart and worked diligently every day. She was determined to become an astronomer one day and nothing would stop her. Years passed, and after graduating from college, Catalina applied for a job at the Cerro Tololo observatory. To her delight, she was hired as an assistant astronomer, working alongside the same scientist who had encouraged her. Finally, her childhood dream had become a reality, and Catalina knew that nothing was impossible as long as she kept chasing her dreams.
