1. 表示能力
Can you speak French 你會說法語嗎？
She could sing very well when she was young.
她年輕的時候歌唱得很好。
I could swim like a fish at the age of five.
我五歲時游泳游得像條魚一樣好。
（could 是can的過去式）
2. could表示請求，語氣委婉，顯得有禮貌
Could you please clean your room 你可以打掃你的房間嗎？
肯定回答：Yes, I can. / Yes, sure. /OK./Certainly./Of course./With pleasure.
/No problem./Yes, sure.
否定回答： Sorry, I can’t. I have to do my homework. 對不起，我得做作業(yè)。
Sorry, I can’t. I have to… / I’m afraid not.
/ I’m afraid I can’t. I am going to…
在表示請求幫助或請求允許的疑問句中，我們常用could代替can， 以表示禮貌、委婉或不確定的語氣，而can 則不具有這些語氣。
這樣用時，不能把could 看作為can 的過去式。
2. could 表示請求許可，希望得到允許。

肯定回答：Yes, you can. / Yes, sure. /Yes, certainly.
/ Yes, please.
否定回答：No, you can’t. Sorry, you can’t. / I’m afraid you can’t.
注意
使用 could只是讓請求更禮貌，回答時通常不用 could而用 can。
3. 提出建議: could與can的區(qū)別
could與can都是情態(tài)動詞，could是can的過去式。二者都可用于表示請求，但是用法稍有不同。
can表示一般性的請求，語氣隨便，常用于熟人之間或長輩對晚輩、上級對下級的場合；

用 can 提出直接建議（常用于口語，語氣較隨意）
We can eat in a restaurant this evening. 今晚我們可以在餐館吃飯。
could表示有禮貌的請求，語氣委婉，常用于非熟人之間或晚輩對長輩、下級對上級的場合。
—Could you tell us if it snows in winter in Australia —Sure.
—請告訴我們，澳大利亞冬天下雪嗎？—當然可以。
用 could 提出委婉建議（語氣更禮貌、含蓄，適合正式或陌生場景）
Maybe I could give you a lift / ride to the supermarket.

4. could與can表示推測
肯定句中的推測： can 通常不用于肯定句表示推測，會顯得不自然。 He can be at home now. 不自然
He could/may/might be at home now. 他可能在家。
could 可以用于肯定句，表示不太確定的推測 ≈ may/might。
She could be lying. 她可能在撒謊。
It could rain later. 稍后可能會下雨。
否定句中的推測：
can't 和 couldn't 都可用于否定句，但語氣不同：
couldn't語氣更弱，表示"不太可能"， can't不可能 。 She couldn't be the thief—she was with me all day.
她不可能是小偷，她一整天都和我在一起。
