復(fù)合句中,修飾某一名詞或代詞的從句叫定語從句,被定語從句修飾的詞叫先行詞。
定語從句一般放在先行詞后面,引導(dǎo)定語從句的詞叫關(guān)系詞 (關(guān)系代詞和關(guān)系副詞),關(guān)系詞在從句中充當(dāng)句子成分。

which和who引導(dǎo)的定語從句
which引導(dǎo)的定語從句修飾的一般是物。
which 在從句中作主語或賓語。
作主語時不可省略,作賓語時可省略。
e.g. My home town is a city which has a history of 2,000 years.
我的家鄉(xiāng)是一座有著2000年歷史的城市。
The city (which) we live in has a population of six million.
我們居住的這座城市有600萬人口。
which引導(dǎo)的定語從句
如果先行詞指人,定語從句的引導(dǎo)詞就可以用who。
在從句中,who作主語,whom作賓語(常可省略)。在口語中,有時可用who代替whom, 也可省略。
e.g. He is the doctor who saved the girl's life.
他就是救了那個女孩生命的醫(yī)生。
The man (who / whom) you're waiting for has come.
你在等的那個人已經(jīng)來了。
who引導(dǎo)的定語從句
不管定語從句修飾的是人還是物, 如果引導(dǎo)詞在從句中作賓語, 通常就可以省略。
e.g. Did you go to the talk (that/which) the famous scientist gave at your school
你去聽那位著名科學(xué)家在你們學(xué)校的演講了嗎?
Is that the car (that/which) you bought last month
這就是你上個月買的那輛車嗎?
A friend is a person (who/whom) you know very well and like. 朋友就是你非常了解并且喜歡的人。
定語從句中引導(dǎo)詞的省略
引導(dǎo)詞作賓語時可以省略,省略后的從句仍然有主語和謂語, 可以分辨出哪部分是定語從句。
引導(dǎo)詞在從句中作主語時不能省略, 否則會造成結(jié)構(gòu)混亂。
e.g. I’d like to have a teacher who is good at speaking.
He can make lessons that are usually boring interesting.

I’m going to tell you about the history of photography.
The first successful photograph was produced in 1827. At first, it took a long time to take a picture, so people in early photographs didn’t smile. The first photographers needed to know not only how to take photos, but also how to develop them.
Then, in 1888, Kodak introduced a camera that could be used by everyone. It wasn’t expensive. It was easy to use.
And Kodak helped customers develop the photos. Although today we would find it big and heavy, Kodak’s camera was smaller and lighter than any other earlier cameras. After its invention, taking photographs became a very popular hobby. Cameras became smaller and smaller.
Cameras with computer technology were introduced in the 1990s. There isn’t even a need for printing the photos. Today you can buy camera phones, so maybe there isn’t even a need for a separate camera at all!
