Who is he
He is Norman Bethune.
He was born in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada on March 4, 1890.
He graduated from University of Toronto in 1916.
He went to Spain in 1936 and organized a mobile blood transfusion (輸血) service, the first of its kind, to operate at a 1000 km front.
Bethune came to China and joined the 8th Route Army in the Shanxi-Hebei border region. He was a tireless surgeon then.
In 1939, he died because of septicemia (敗血癥) when he was only 49.

Tu Youyou is one of the most famous scientists in China. People call her the “Mother of Qinghaosu”.
She was born in Ningbo in 1930. She studied at Beijing Medical College from 1951 to 1955. She decided to find a treatment for malaria, so she worked as the leader of a research team in 1969. After failing more than 190 times, she discovered qinghaosu from a Chinese herb in 1972. Qinghaosu is very effective at fighting malaria. In 2015, she won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In 2019, she received the title of “the Greatest Person of the 20th Century”.
Thanks to her discovery, qinghaosu has saved millions of lives. She is a true hero.
