Ⅰ.閱讀理解
A
It was a Sunday night.I circled the neighbourhood a few times, looking for a place to leave my car. Finally, I found one a block south of my house. It was behind a late-model Jeep.I tried to back into the space, but I failed to see the angles clearly.I heard it before I felt it, the sound of plastic on plastic, like a sheet of sandpaper along the surface of a painted piece of wood.I got out of my car to check the damage. My car was unharmed. However, there were two distinct lines on the Jeep.
Then I noticed a woman, walking her dog, who was now photographing me with her phone.“I hope you’re not planning to drive away,” she said quietly.Until then, I was annoyed with myself for having been so careless, but now, I was mad with her for taking my picture.“How dare she?”I thought. She had no respect for my privacy.
And how dare she assume I would do the wrong thing? But soon I calmed down because I knew she wasn’t entirely incorrect.I’d made no decision to drive away without leaving a note, but I’d be lying if I said the idea hadn’t flashed across my mind.It was dark, and aside from her no one was watching. It happens all the time — the hit-and-run in the parking lot.
We all have those desires to behave selfishly, to go against the social contract; it is not the thought but what we do with it that counts. It is the commitment to take responsibility, to care for one another, and to think about the greater good that makes this world a better place to stay. The choice to own up was left to me.I left a note with my name and phone number under the wiper blade (雨刮器) of the Jeep.

Ⅰ.閱讀理解
A
It was a Sunday night.I circled the neighbourhood a few times,
looking for a place to leave my car. Finally, I found one a block south of
my house. It was behind a late-model Jeep.I tried to back into the space,
but I failed to see the angles clearly.I heard it before I felt it, the sound
of plastic on plastic, like a sheet of sandpaper along the surface of a
painted piece of wood.I got out of my car to check the damage. My car
was unharmed. However, there were two distinct lines on the Jeep.
Then I noticed a woman, walking her dog, who was now
photographing me with her phone.“I hope you’re not planning to drive
away,” she said quietly.Until then, I was annoyed with myself for
having been so careless, but now, I was mad with her for taking my
picture.“How dare she?”I thought. She had no respect for my privacy.
And how dare she assume I would do the wrong thing? But soon I
calmed down because I knew she wasn’t entirely incorrect.I’d made no
decision to drive away without leaving a note, but I’d be lying if I said
the idea hadn’t flashed across my mind.It was dark, and aside from her
no one was watching. It happens all the time — the hit-and-run in the
parking lot.
We all have those desires to behave selfishly, to go against the social
contract; it is not the thought but what we do with it that counts. It is the
commitment to take responsibility, to care for one another, and to think
about the greater good that makes this world a better place to stay. The
choice to own up was left to me.I left a note with my name and phone
number under the wiper blade (雨刮器) of the Jeep.

89-year-old Derlin Newey, who lives in the Roy area of Utah, has
supplemented (補充) his Social Security income for a little over a year
by delivering food for Papa John’s Pizza. When Newey delivered a large
apple pizza to Gladys Valdez a few weeks ago with a smile and struck up a
conversation, Gladys was completely pleased.
“He was just so friendly, really talkative, and just super sweet
and genuine,” Gladys told her husband, Carlos Valdez about
Newey.Carlos was so taken with Newey’s friendliness and high
passion — and the fact that he was delivering pizza at his age — that he
decided to crowdfund on Newey’s behalf via a Venmo link on his TikTok
page.Thousands of people donated and it all added up to more than $12,
000.
Then came the surprise delivery. When Newey opened the door to his
mobile home, Carlos was standing there holding an empty pizza box,
which he had stuffed with an envelope full of all the cash.Newey was
flabbergasted, and his eyes filled with tears.Since the initial fundraiser
that brought in $12,000, people have donated $8,000 more for
Newey.
Newey, a retired salesman, typically works about 30 hours a
week, Mondays through Saturdays delivering pizza. As a native of
Utah’s Ogden area, he spent 26 years living in Gridley, California,
and working for National Merchandising, and he also earned a
bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.Young Newey was a
competitive skier, and he later taught skiing; about four years ago, he
gave up skiing because it became too difficult physically.
Even if Newey didn’t need the extra income, he said, he would
still do his delivery job because he loves it.“Oh, fantastic,” he said
about his job.“I love the people I’m working with, and I love having
pleasant conversations and making friends with people. The beautiful
children — you should see the smiles on their faces when they say,
‘Oh, we’re going to have pizza tonight!’ That’s worth more than
the money I make.”
