  Discoveries at the famous Sanxingdui Ruins in Southwest China show that the region’s ancient Shu civilization shared similarities with ancient Maya civilization.
  The Sanxingdui Ruins belongs to the ancient Shu Kingdom that existed at least 4,800 years ago and lasted more than 2,000 years, while the Maya civilization built its city-states around 200 CE.
  The bronze-made remains of trees unearthed at the ruins of the ancient Shu Kingdom resemble the sacred ceiba tree, which symbolizes the union of heaven, earth and the underworld in the Maya civilization.“They are very important similarities,” says Santos, a Mexican archaeologist stressing that “the representations of trees in both cultures provide the symbolism that is very similar ”.
  The findings at the Sanxingdui Ruins, considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, also show a new aspect of Bronze Age culture, indicating the ancient civilization already had technologies that were thought to have been developed much later.
  While the time span between the ancient Shu Kingdom and the Maya is great, the findings highlight the closeness between the two civilizations.They developed in areas with comparable climates and reflected their world view through related symbols.“In the end, man is still man, independent of time and space.What we have is that, at this latitude (緯度), both the Shu people and the Mayans looked at the same sky and had the same stars on the horizon,” the expert says.
  One notable feature of the recent discoveries at Sanxingdui was the cross-subject work and technology applied by teams of Chinese archaeologists, which allowed the unearthing of artefacts as fragile as silk remains, which other types of less careful digging methods would not have been able to register.
  Cooperation between Chinese and Mexican archaeologists could benefit projects in Maya, where the rainy climate and humidity are problematic for the conservation of ruins.
  “Every time our cultural knowledge increases, regardless of whether we speak the same language or not, what it shows us is that we continue to be sister cultures and, therefore, the exchange of such knowledge is fundamental,” says Santos.

  Welcome, everybody. It’s wonderful to be here. Before we begin, I want to ask you: have you ever been awed② by natural wonders? Have you ever been fascinated by③ human civilization④? [1]If so, you might already understand why UNESCO is fighting to preserve⑤ sites of cultural and natural importance to mankind.[2] I have the belief that some of you have heard about UNESCO heritage sites⑥ or maybe even visited one! There are currently around 1,100 sites in more than 160 countries worldwide. Unfortunately, they face a variety of dangers and many of them are in urgent⑦ need of protection. Let’s look at some specific issues.

One of the problems is the flood of tourists.[4] Millions of tourists travel to UNESCO World Heritage Sites every year, so it is only natural that the sites suffer a bit of wear and tear .The temples of Angkor in Cambodia are typical examples of unique architecture.[5] Every day, thousands of tourists climbing up the narrow stone steps are wearing down these ancient buildings and the long-term consequences could lead to irreparable destruction of the internal structure.

The city has been recognized as the musical capital of Europe since the 16th century, home to the likes of Mozart and Beethoven. It is now on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to high-rise construction projects in central Vienna.

  Another big danger is human activities. Wars can cause a great deal of
damage to both cultural and natural heritage sites . Sometimes,
amazing ancient clay sculptures and buildings are accidentally
destroyed by missile attacks during periods of violence . [3]In some
conflict areas where civil wars often break out , fighters have even
destroyed heritage sites on purpose .
  Meanwhile, World Heritage status may give rise to a series of
problems. One of the problems is the flood of tourists.[4] Millions of
tourists travel to UNESCO World Heritage Sites every year, so it is only
natural that the sites suffer a bit of wear and tear . The temples of
Angkor in Cambodia are typical examples of unique
architecture.[5] Every day, thousands of tourists climbing up the narrow
stone steps are wearing down these ancient buildings and the long-term
consequences could lead to irreparable destruction of the internal
structure.

  Due to human population growth, the demand for production and
consumption of goods increases. Widespread development puts our
cultural and natural heritage sites in danger. Many heritage sites are even
at risk of being lost forever. Take the Historic Centre of Vienna in Austria
as an example . The city has been recognized as the musical capital of
Europe since the 16th century, home to the likes of Mozart and
Beethoven. It is now on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to high-
rise construction projects in central Vienna.
  [6]Such dangers can have disastrous outcomes not only for the sites
themselves, but also for people. For instance, the Great Barrier Reef
off the north-east coast of Australia is a natural heritage site in
danger.[7]Due to high seawater temperatures caused by global
warming, a large amount of coral is killed and parts of the reef are
seriously affected, which harms its fragile natural ecology .[8] As well
as being home to a wide diversity of ocean species, the reef can boost
tourism and fishing in the local area, providing many job opportunities.
It also helps protect the coastline against waves and floods.
If the reef disappears, many people’s lives and possibly even their
homes will suffer greatly.
