(2024·南京高二下質檢)I was ten when my dad helped me buy my first ten-speed bicycle from Father Allen.I put up 60 of my grass cutting and snow shoveling (鏟) money, and my dad put up the other half.I would pay him back over the next six months.Although it was the kind of bike you’d expect a priest to have, it was my ticket to the adult world.
I spent that summer and autumn riding as if to put Greg LeMond to shame. My sister Liz, a prisoner of her five-speed and banana seat, never had a chance to keep up.
Just before the Christmas deadline to pay my dad back, we were hit with several snowstorms. This allowed me to shovel enough driveways to pay off my debt.I was now officially a bike owner; it was a feeling unlike any other.
On that Christmas morning, my dad gave me a used portable record player.I was excited. However, my joy was short-lived after my dad called my sister to the kitchen.“We have one more gift for you,” he said as he opened the door that led to the garage. There, on the steps, stood a brand new ten-speed Schwinn.
“It’s not fair,” I complained.“I worked so hard for my bike, and it’s not even new. Then Liz gets a brand new bike. She didn’t have to do anything for it.” My dad smiled.“She didn’t have to do anything for it because it’s not really for her,” he said. What did that mean? I didn’t want her bike.
By spring Liz and I were riding all over town together now that she could keep up.As we grew, Liz and I became true friends.
Still, I wasn’t smart enough to figure out what my dad meant until years later. That brand new bike was not a gift for Liz — it was a gift for me.He’d given me the gift of my sister’s company, the ability to stay together rather than drift apart in the face of my ability to travel. He gave me my best friend.

(2024·煙臺高二下月考)The other weekend I went to the mall in search of a new pair of tennis shoes. When I arrived at the mall, the stores were crowded.Apparently, none of these shoppers had read Van Boven’s 2005 review article highlighting the benefits of spending money on experiences over material goods.
When surveying various cultures to determine what makes people happy, researchers kept finding that having more didn’t equate (等同) to being happier. And people who try to have more are, in fact, less satisfied. But it seems this is only true if you are spending your money to buy “things” rather than “memories”.
Why is money spent to create memories better spent? In his review article, Van Boven explains why experiential purchases make us happier:
You got a raise, your co-worker got a bigger one.You bought a new house, your neighbour built a bigger one.On the other hand, Van Boven suggests that experiences are more personal and unique, and thus harder to compare. When people are asked whether they’d prefer to live in a world where they earned 50,000 a year while others earned 25,000 or a world where they earned 100,000 while others earned 200,000, about half of the people prefer to earn 50,000 if it means they earn more than everyone else. But when asked whether they’d prefer two weeks of vacation while everyone else got one, or four weeks while everyone else got eight, 85 percent of people preferred the four weeks even if other people got more.
People are generally engaging in experiences with others, whereas purchasing a new pair of boots is more likely to be a lonely affair. There is also something negative associated with being materialistic and researchers have found that people tend to prefer to interact with other people who are “experiential” than those who are “materialistic”.Engaging in an experience together can also help people create shared memories and connections.
5.What did the author think of those shoppers?( )
A.They were fond of materials. B.They were creating memories.
C.They should be taught by Van Boven. D.They had interest in Van Boven’s theory.
6.Why do people prefer to earn 50,000 instead of 100,000?( ?。?br/>A.They seek better experiences. B.They don’t care about money.
C.They want to be better than others. D.They want to show their nobility of spirit.
7.What can we learn about materialistic purchases?( ?。?br/>A.They are more private.
B.They are easier to compare.
C.They offer us longer happiness.
D.They offer us more satisfaction.
8.What’s the second benefit of experiential purchases?( ?。?br/>A.They help us build relationships.
B.They give us a sense of possession.
C.They give us a sense of achievement.
D.They help us improve our social status.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank.Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day.A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day.Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class.“How about singing together in the talent show?”she grinned,“I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home.I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears.Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent.Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.“A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head.“Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act.But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

[1]Lately, all of us have seen Chinese people on TV in far-off places in the world, helping other countries to develop. We see Chinese workers building roads in the Congo, a port in Pakistan, railways in Panama, and an airport in Sri Lanka. And we see Chinese miners, oil workers, agricultural experts, mechanics, and doctors working in nearly every corner of the world. And some people may ask,“Is it worth it? Why help people overseas when China has many areas that are still in need of development?” 動詞-ing短語helping other countries to develop作伴隨狀語。 I had the same questions myself. But for me, it was much more personal. You see,my mother is a medical doctor, and for the last two years, she has been working as a volunteer consultant in Tanzania, Africa, as a part of a medical team sent by the Chinese government. To be honest, when my mother first left for Africa, I was upset. My mother cooked me dinner every night, and she took good care of me.But more importantly, she was my best friend. We talked together, we spent our leisure time together, and except for school and work, we were never apart. So I was unhappy about her leaving without even asking for my input. [2]But then I began to hear about the work she was doing in Tanzania, a country that has many health problems, and now I am singing a different tune. Many dangerous diseases which are rare in China are quite commonly contracted in Tanzania. And, while the country is quite beautiful and has much natural wealth, many of the people are quite poor and live without things we take for granted, such as electricity, running water, cars and good transport systems, and supermarkets. One project that my mother worked on was helping to build a cardiac hospital.Prior to this, if a Tanzanian had a heart condition and needed surgery, they would have to go abroad.Since this was quite expensive, many people went without medical treatment and some even died. Now, not only are Tanzanians helped by the hospital, but people in neighbouring countries are helped as well.It has made a big difference to their lives. My mother also does a circuit of the rural villages to provide medical treatment, help those with disabilities, and provide consultation and training for local doctors. In addition, her team has given patients a new malaria treatment invented in China, and this has saved many lives. 在第一個分句中,she was doing in Tanzania是省略了關系代詞which/that的定語從句,修飾先行詞the work;that has many health problems也是定語從句,修飾先行詞country。 Today, I want to relay to you that I’m proud of the work my mother has done, and I am now supportive of it.Is her work worth it? Yes, to the lives of the people she is helping, it is worth it.But by any criteria this work is worth it to us as well, because it shows that we are global citizens interested in world stability, and that we feel responsible for others and are ready to build a community with a shared future for mankind.Everyone deserves a fair chance in life. When I think of all the things that we as Chinese citizens can be most proud of,helping others comes at the top of this list. Now that I understand how important my mother’s work is, I’ve decided to become a volunteer myself to help people in other lands. In the future, I pray that you will do the same. Thank you! 學語言: 文章第二段使用了動詞-ing短語作伴隨狀語(helping other countries to develop)和定語從句(that are still in need of development)。 第五段使用了while引導的讓步狀語從句(while the country is quite beautiful and has much natural wealth),動詞-ing短語作表語(helping to build a cardiac hospital)和部分倒裝句(not only are Tanzanians helped by the hospital)。 第六段使用了省略that的定語從句(my mother has done)和Now that引導的原因狀語從句(Now that I understand how important my mother’s work is),這些高級句式和語法的運用使得文章精彩紛呈。

Step 1
Hello! My name is Zhan Bingbing.
[1]Lately, all of us have seen Chinese people on TV in far-off
places in the world, helping other countries to develop. We see Chinese
workers building roads in the Congo, a port in Pakistan, railways in
Panama, and an airport in Sri Lanka. And we see Chinese miners, oil
workers, agricultural experts, mechanics, and doctors working in
nearly every corner of the world. And some people may ask,“Is it worth
it? Why help people overseas when China has many areas that are still in
need of development?”
動詞-ing短語helping other countries to
I had the same questions myself. But for me, it was much more
personal. You see,my mother is a medical doctor, and for the last two
years, she has been working as a volunteer consultant in Tanzania,
Africa, as a part of a medical team sent by the Chinese government.
To be honest, when my mother first left for Africa, I was
upset. My mother cooked me dinner every night, and she took good care
of me.But more importantly, she was my best friend. We talked
together, we spent our leisure time together, and except for school and
work, we were never apart. So I was unhappy about her leaving without
even asking for my input.
[2]But then I began to hear about the work she was doing in
Tanzania, a country that has many health problems, and now I am
singing a different tune. Many dangerous diseases which are rare in China
are quite commonly contracted in Tanzania. And, while the country is
quite beautiful and has much natural wealth, many of the people are quite
poor and live without things we take for granted, such as electricity,
running water,cars and good transport systems,and supermarkets.One
project that my mother worked on was helping to build a cardiac
hospital.Prior to this,
if a Tanzanian had a heart condition and needed surgery, they would have
to go abroad.Since this was quite expensive, many people went without
medical treatment and some even died. Now, not only are Tanzanians
helped by the hospital, but people in neighbouring countries are helped as
well.It has made a big difference to their lives. My mother also does a
circuit of the rural villages to provide medical treatment, help those with
disabilities, and provide consultation and training for local doctors. In
addition, her team has given patients a new malaria treatment invented in
China, and this has saved many lives.
doing in Tanzania是省略了關系代詞which/that的定語從句,修飾先行
詞the work;that has many health problems也是定語從句,修飾先行詞
country。
Today, I want to relay to you that I’m proud of the work my
mother has done, and I am now supportive of it.Is her work worth it?
Yes, to the lives of the people she is helping, it is worth it.But by any
criteria this work is worth it to us as well, because it shows that we are
global citizens interested in world stability, and that we feel responsible
for others and are ready to build a community with a shared future for
mankind.Everyone deserves a fair chance in life. When I think of all the
things that we as Chinese citizens can be most proud of,helping others
comes at the top of this list.
Now that I understand how important my mother’s work is, I’ve
decided to become a volunteer myself to help people in other lands. In the
future, I pray that you will do the same.
Thank you!
Step 2
countries to develop)和定語從句(that are still in need of
development)。
government)。
  第五段使用了while引導的讓步狀語從句(while the country is
quite beautiful and has much natural wealth),動詞-ing短語作表語
(helping to build a cardiac hospital)和部分倒裝句(not only are
Tanzanians helped by the hospital)。
  第六段使用了省略that的定語從句(my mother has done)和
(Now that I understand how
important my mother’s work is),這些高級句式和語法的運用

first ten-speed bicycle from Father Allen.I put up 60 of my grass cutting
and snow shoveling (鏟) money, and my dad put up the other half.I
would pay him back over the next six months.Although it was the kind of
bike you’d expect a priest to have, it was my ticket to the adult world.
I spent that summer and autumn riding as if to put Greg LeMond to
shame. My sister Liz, a prisoner of her five-speed and banana seat,
never had a chance to keep up.
Just before the Christmas deadline to pay my dad back, we were hit
with several snowstorms. This allowed me to shovel enough driveways to
pay off my debt.I was now officially a bike owner; it was a feeling
unlike any other.
On that Christmas morning, my dad gave me a used portable record
player.I was excited. However, my joy was short-lived after my dad
called my sister to the kitchen.“We have one more gift for you,” he
said as he opened the door that led to the garage. There, on the steps,
stood a brand new ten-speed Schwinn.
“It’s not fair,” I complained.“I worked so hard for my bike,
and it’s not even new. Then Liz gets a brand new bike. She didn’t have
to do anything for it.” My dad smiled.“She didn’t have to do anything
for it because it’s not really for her,” he said. What did that mean? I
didn’t want her bike.
By spring Liz and I were riding all over town together now that she
could keep up.As we grew, Liz and I became true friends.
Still, I wasn’t smart enough to figure out what my dad meant until
years later. That brand new bike was not a gift for Liz — it was a gift for
me.He’d given me the gift of my sister’s company, the ability to stay
together rather than drift apart in the face of my ability to travel. He gave
me my best friend.

The other weekend I went to the mall in
search of a new pair of tennis shoes. When I arrived at the mall, the
stores were crowded.Apparently, none of these shoppers had read Van
Boven’s 2005 review article highlighting the benefits of spending money
on experiences over material goods.
When surveying various cultures to determine what makes people
happy, researchers kept finding that having more didn’t equate (等
同) to being happier. And people who try to have more are, in fact,
less satisfied. But it seems this is only true if you are spending your money
to buy “things” rather than “memories”.
Why is money spent to create memories better spent? In his review
article, Van Boven explains why experiential purchases make us
happier:
You got a raise, your co-worker got a bigger one.You bought a new
house, your neighbour built a bigger one.On the other hand, Van
Boven suggests that experiences are more personal and unique, and thus
harder to compare. When people are asked whether they’d prefer to live
in a world where they earned 50,000 a year while others earned 25,
000 or a world where they earned 100,000 while others earned 200,
000, about half of the people prefer to earn 50,000 if it means they
earn more than everyone else.
But when asked whether they’d prefer two weeks of vacation while
everyone else got one, or four weeks while everyone else got eight, 85
percent of people preferred the four weeks even if other people got more.
People are generally engaging in experiences with others, whereas
purchasing a new pair of boots is more likely to be a lonely affair. There is
also something negative associated with being materialistic and researchers
have found that people tend to prefer to interact with other people who are
“experiential” than those who are “materialistic”.Engaging in an
experience together can also help people create shared memories and
connections.

When I was in middle school, my
family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business —
a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved
nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent
show for the local food bank.Students were encouraged to showcase their
unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day.A
buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big
day.Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to
participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any
special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.I
couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the
most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the
grocery store after class.“How about singing together in the talent
show?”she grinned,“I heard you singing a tune, along the way back
home.I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my
ears.Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little
talent.Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being
favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent
towards us and her face lit up.“A big occasion.” Then a light bulb
seemed to go in her head.“Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet
you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we
were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after
school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As
the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act.But the day
before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache
and was not in any shape to perform.
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150左右;
I was completely surprised at the news.

I was completely surprised at the news. What should I do? Having
prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up.Feeling
at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution,
when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my
mum, who looked at me with care and concern.“You have prepared for
it enough. You can do it by yourself.” she said after my stumbled
explanation.I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and
warmness swelled up in my heart.Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment.Looking around the audience, I
stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice
trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness
was gone with the wind.Emotions filled in my song, I performed as
naturally as I spoke every day.I saw my mum, who was looking at me
with reassurance and care.It turned out to be a good performance, which
helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.
