I’ve had a bit of a thing for my elders. As a kid I wouldn’t leave my great-aunt alone. In my early 30s, I went on six coach holidays with a number of strangers twice my age for my book, The Gran Tour.So it won’t come as a surprise to learn that I lately dragged (硬拉) my old man to Scarborough for a mini-break.When I say dragged, I’m only half-joking.He didn’t fancy the coach ride, for a start. For the first hour of the journey, Dad behaved like a hostage (人質), but by the time we’d reached Reading he was helping the couple in the next seat with the crossword.
It surprised me that he knew the answer to 4 down was “saturnalia” (an ancient Roman festival). And the fact that it surprised me showed how relatively little I knew of the man.I knew his outline (概況)well enough — born 1952, shipbuilder in a factory, 12 years sober (沒有喝酒的) and counting, ever so kind — but not the full picture, not the finer details.I hoped that Scarborough might fill in some gaps.
And it did.Away from his fixed address, Dad began doing uncommon things. At dinner at the hotel on the first night, he ordered a dish he’d never heard of and then asked if I’d ever been hypnotized (施催眠術).Later, over desert, he wondered if it was worth him getting into Instagram. It helped that he liked his new hotel. It offered, at every turn, considerable perspectives.Faced with fresh scenery, Dad’s thoughts went walkabout, and his chat went with them:“I knew a girl from Yorkshire once. Her name was Margherita.Moved to Holland with a dentist.”
When you go away with a parent, you see more of each other.Case in point:we were down on the beach one afternoon, just wandering about, when Dad suddenly took off his clothes and skipped merrily seaward.I could have done without seeing that side of him.
24.What does Paragraph 1 want to tell us about the author’s dad?( )
A.He enjoyed doing crosswords. B.He preferred travelling by coach.
C.His new book was liked by the elders. D.His attitude changed as the journey progressed.
25.What did the author hope to get from the trip to Scarborough?( )
A.His dad quitting drinking.
B.Knowing his dad at a deeper level.
C.His dad experiencing the Saturnalia festival in person.
D.Exploring the shipbuilding factory where his dad worked.
26.Why does the author mention Margherita from Yorkshire?( )
A.To explain his liking of the new hotel.
B.To tell the story of his dad and Margherita.
C.To show what his dad was like in a new environment.
D.To compare the scenery of Yorkshire and Scarborough.
27.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?( )
A.Like Father, Like Son B.My Dad, My Inspiration
C.A New Adventure That Surprised Me D.A New Side of My Dad That I Didn’t Expect

As extreme weather and human activities damage the world’s agricultural land, scientists and developers are looking at new and largely unproven methods to save soil for agriculture. In a Nova Scotia greenhouse, Canadian scientist Vicky L vesque is adding biochar (生物炭) — the burnt remains of plants and wood waste — to soil to help apples grow better.
Biochar is an artificial means of creating a carbon-rich product to boost soil health, modelled after exceptionally fertile areas of Amazon rainforest land called “Dark Earths” that were produced over time as a byproduct of cooking fires, animal and fish bones, broken pottery, etc.Biochar could be a “great opportunity” for trapping plant-sustaining carbon in soil, L vesque said, adding that biochar also acts like a water sponge (海綿).
Her research, which started in 2012, has shown that clay soil treated with biochar emitted (排出) much less nitrous oxide, a powerful greenhouse gas, benefiting the atmosphere and trapping more carbon in the ground where it can boost plant growth. Some types of biochar increased yields of greenhouse tomatoes and sweet peppers by 32% and 54% respectively while requiring less fertilizer, due to biochar spurring the reproduction of bacteria that benefit plant growth.
In Malaysia, Nutrition Technologies produces “soil conditioner” from frass — the waste and skin of black soldier fly larvae (黑水虻幼蟲).Specially treated frass led to a 12% increase in plant-nourishing soil organic matter, something that otherwise declines over time, according to the company’s research.Nutrition Technologies sells an average of 200 tonnes of frass monthly in Malaysia, mainly to farmers who apply it to leafy greens, cucumbers and fruit, said Martin Zorrilla, the company’s chief technology officer. While most Malaysian fertilizer producers now sell their frass, volumes are still too low to draw the attention of global agriculture companies, Zorrilla said.
Long-established soil preservation techniques, such as cover crops and sowing crops during off-seasons, are proving no match for more frequent droughts, floods and temperature extremes.New solutions which improve the physical properties of soil may complement (補充) the traditional ways — if they prove profitable and effective.
28.Where does the idea of biochar come from?( )
A.A water sponge. B.A carbon-rich product.
C.Amazon’s dark earths. D.Vicky L vesque’s experiments.
29.What does the underlined word “spurring” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?( )
A.Encouraging. B.Controlling.
C.Continuing. D.Delaying.
30.What can be learned about “soil conditioner” made by Nutrition Technologies?( )
A.It hasn’t gone into production yet. B.Its effectiveness declines over time.
C.It hasn’t entered international markets. D.It can remove the waste and skin of some insects.
31.What is the author’s attitude to the future of new solutions to soil improvement?( )
A.Doubtful. B.Uninterested.
C.Curious. D.Positive.

Sir David Chipperfield is the latest winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the famous award that has gone in the past to the likes of Frank Gehry, Luis Barrag n, Oscar Niemeyer and Zaha Hadid.
Unlike those starchitects, Chipperfield creates understated buildings, including many elegant and dignified museums, such as the campus of the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri and the Des Moines Public Library.Crisp and minimalist, his aesthetic (審美觀) is timeless, rather than fashionable. As the Pritzker jury (評判委員會) wrote its words, “We do not see an instantly recognizable David Chipperfield building in different cities, but different David Chipperfield buildings designed specifically for each circumstance.”
How is the 2023 Pritzter winner feeling about being described as not “instantly recognizable”?“I’m happy with that,” Chipperfield said to the reporter.“The idea of the architect’s signature has become a rather overstated ambition.”
A Chipperfield building is one that thoughtfully merges into its environment, says architecture professor Mabel Wilson.“It’s also a building that’s very simple and precise,” she told the reporter.“It isn’t something that comes at you all at once but something that’s very measured. And I think that kind of accuracy describes Chipperfield’s practice.”
In 1997, Chipperfield’s firm was picked to rebuild Berlin’s Neues Museum.Built in the mid-1800s, the museum was bombed nearly to pieces during World War Ⅱ.“The building had stood as a ruin for more than 50 years,” Chipperfield said in a 2011 TEDx talk.“History had somehow left it behind.” Chipperfield preserved the remains as part of the design.“That was an incredibly controversial decision and it put me in conversation, let’s say, with the citizens of Berlin,” he explained. The process is an example of the cooperative effort Chipperfield sees as central to his practice.
In 2011 TEDx talk, Chipperfield scolded how so many buildings all over the world contain the DNA of bad modern architecture, due to some clients, a construction industry consumed with finishing fast and architects unconcerned about building for the future.
32.What do we know about David Chipperfield?( )
A.His appreciating beauty is out of date. B.His aesthetic is temporary.
C.He won the famous architecture award. D.He lacks recognition in the architecture field.
33.What can we learn about Chipperfield buildings?( )
A.They are at one with surroundings. B.They lack some modern factors.
C.They can be identified immediately. D.They are complex and changeable.
34.How did Chipperfield rebuild Berlin’s Neues Museum?( )
A.He put its war remains into his design. B.He abandoned its war remains in his design.
C.He copied its war remains into the building. D.He redesigned it with the citizens of Berlin.
35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?( )
A.Entertainment. B.Environment.
C.Literature. D.Figure.

I was a fifth-grader.Today was my birthday and I was going to hold a slumber party (睡衣派對) at my house.
My best friend Jaime was the first to arrive, and then came Dawn, Tamika, and Angie. As we waited for Nicole, we killed time by admiring Angie’s new sunglasses.Angie was the first in our group to score a pair of cool sunglasses from her parents. We walked to the bathroom to ooh and ah over them as if they were decorated with diamonds.I was trying them on when my mom interrupted us to announce Nicole’s arrival. As a welcome gesture, I removed the sunglasses, placed them on the bridge of Nicole’s nose, and gave her a heartfelt hug.We then went to the basement for a board game. That was the last time we each recalled seeing Angie’s sunglasses.
The next morning, all of my friends were organizing their belongings before their parents picked them up.“I can’t find my sunglasses,” Angie said. The panic in her voice was obvious.“I know I put them in here.”Then, I asked my mom for an intervention.
“Calm down, girls,” she said.“Let’s retrace our steps.” My mother’s advice led us all to the bathroom. The investigation was going nowhere, and things really took a downturn when Angie turned on Nicole.
“You took them,” Angie accused her.“I didn’t,” Nicole said softly, shaking her head in protest.“I put them by the sink!I didn’t steal them, Angie, I swear.”
The search for the sunglasses continued until the parents arrived to pick up their daughters.Angie was the first to leave. She gave each of us a hug goodbye — everyone except Nicole. After a week or so, there was still no sign of the sunglasses.

So it won’t come as a surprise ...with the crossword.
I knew his outline ...I hoped that Scarborough might fill in some gaps.
Away from his fixed address, Dad began doing uncommon things.

Dear John,
Having received your email asking about my Spring Festival holiday plan, I’m more than delighted to share it with you.
To explore the splendid culture of China, I, together with some of my classmates, am planning a trip to Henan Province by high-speed train.Henan, known as “the Central Plains”, is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization. We’ll visit two major cities in Henan, Luoyang and Kaifeng, both of which served as capital cities of several dynasties, boasting a rich historical heritage and many scenic attractions as well.
What about your arrangements for your vacation?
Yours,
Li Hua
第二節
One day, I was brushing my teeth before bed when something behind the bathroom sink caught my eye.I looked down and found the sunglasses lying there. This was an area that, in our haste, would have easily been overlooked during our initial search.Although we had all seen Nicole put the sunglasses on, no one saw her take them off and place them near the sink.I was so overjoyed that I nearly choked on my toothbrush!
The next day, I revealed everything to Angie and Nicole.Nicole was thankful that the misunderstanding had finally come to an end, but she said she was even happier about the fact that I had stood by her.It was Angie’s response that had thrown me for a loop:She said that I was a good friend for standing by Nicole when she had written her off too quick. She also said that she was sorry that her actions had made my birthday party less enjoyable. All was forgiven, and in a few days, we were back to normal and looking forward to the next slumber party.

  I’ve had a bit of a thing for my elders.As a kid I wouldn’t leave
my great-aunt alone. In my early 30s, I went on six coach holidays with a
number of strangers twice my age for my book, The Gran Tour.So it
won’t come as a surprise to learn that I lately dragged (硬拉) my old
man to Scarborough for a mini-break.When I say dragged, I’m only
half-joking.He didn’t fancy the coach ride, for a start. For the first hour
of the journey, Dad behaved like a hostage (人質), but by the time
we’d reached Reading he was helping the couple in the next seat with the
crossword.
It surprised me that he knew the answer to 4 down was “saturnalia”
(an ancient Roman festival). And the fact that it surprised me showed
how relatively little I knew of the man.I knew his outline (概況)well
enough — born 1952, shipbuilder in a factory, 12 years sober (沒有喝
酒的) and counting, ever so kind — but not the full picture, not the
finer details.I hoped that Scarborough might fill in some gaps.
And it did.Away from his fixed address, Dad began doing
uncommon things. At dinner at the hotel on the first night, he ordered a
dish he’d never heard of and then asked if I’d ever been hypnotized
Later, over desert, he wondered if it was worth him
getting into Instagram. It helped that he liked his new hotel. It offered, at
every turn, considerable perspectives.Faced with fresh scenery, Dad’s
thoughts went walkabout, and his chat went with them:“I knew a girl
from Yorkshire once. Her name was Margherita.Moved to Holland with a
dentist.”
When you go away with a parent, you see more of each other.Case
in point:we were down on the beach one afternoon, just wandering
about, when Dad suddenly took off his clothes and skipped merrily
seaward.I could have done without seeing that side of him.

( )
A. He enjoyed doing crosswords.
B. He preferred travelling by coach.
C. His new book was liked by the elders.
D. His attitude changed as the journey progressed.
So it won’t come as a
surprise ...with the crossword.

25. What did the author hope to get from the trip to Scarborough?
( )
A. His dad quitting drinking.
B. Knowing his dad at a deeper level.
C. His dad experiencing the Saturnalia festival in person.
D. Exploring the shipbuilding factory where his dad worked.
I knew his outline ...I
hoped that Scarborough might fill in some gaps.

Margherita
Margherita
27. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?( )
A. Like Father, Like Son
B. My Dad, My Inspiration
C. A New Adventure That Surprised Me
D. A New Side of My Dad That I Didn’t Expect

As extreme weather and human activities damage the world’s
agricultural land, scientists and developers are looking at new and largely
unproven methods to save soil for agriculture. In a Nova Scotia
greenhouse, Canadian scientist Vicky L vesque is adding biochar (生
物炭) — the burnt remains of plants and wood waste — to soil to help
apples grow better.
Biochar is an artificial means of creating a carbon-rich product to
boost soil health, modelled after exceptionally fertile areas of Amazon
rainforest land called “Dark Earths” that were produced over time as a
byproduct of cooking fires, animal and fish bones, broken pottery,
etc.Biochar could be a “great opportunity” for trapping plant-sustaining
carbon in soil, L vesque said, adding that biochar also acts like a
water sponge (海綿).
Her research, which started in 2012, has shown that clay soil
treated with biochar emitted (排出) much less nitrous oxide, a
powerful greenhouse gas, benefiting the atmosphere and trapping more
carbon in the ground where it can boost plant growth. Some types of
biochar increased yields of greenhouse tomatoes and sweet peppers by 32
% and 54% respectively while requiring less fertilizer, due to biochar
spurring the reproduction of bacteria that benefit plant growth.
In Malaysia, Nutrition Technologies produces “soil conditioner”
from frass — the waste and skin of black soldier fly larvae
Specially treated frass led to a 12% increase in plant-nourishing soil
organic matter, something that otherwise declines over time, according
to the company’s research.Nutrition Technologies sells an average of 200
tonnes of frass monthly in Malaysia, mainly to farmers who apply it to
leafy greens, cucumbers and fruit, said Martin Zorrilla, the
company’s chief technology officer. While most Malaysian fertilizer
producers now sell their frass, volumes are still too low to draw the
attention of global agriculture companies, Zorrilla said.
Long-established soil preservation techniques, such as cover crops
and sowing crops during off-seasons, are proving no match for more
frequent droughts, floods and temperature extremes.New solutions which
improve the physical properties of soil may complement (補充) the
traditional ways — if they prove profitable and effective.

28. Where does the idea of biochar come from?( )
A. A water sponge.
B. A carbon-rich product.
C. Amazon’s dark earths.
D. Vicky L vesque’s experiments.

29. What does the underlined word “spurring” in Paragraph 3 probably
mean?( )
A. Encouraging. B. Controlling.
C. Continuing. D. Delaying.
Some types of
biochar ...that benefit plant growth.
30. What can be learned about “soil conditioner” made by Nutrition
Technologies?( )
A. It hasn’t gone into production yet.
B. Its effectiveness declines over time.
C. It hasn’t entered international markets.
D. It can remove the waste and skin of some insects.
While most Malaysian
fertilizer ...Zorrilla said.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the future of new solutions to soil
improvement?( )
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested.
C. Curious. D. Positive.

Sir David Chipperfield is the latest winner of the Pritzker Architecture
Prize, the famous award that has gone in the past to the likes of Frank
Gehry, Luis Barrag n, Oscar Niemeyer and Zaha Hadid.
Unlike those starchitects, Chipperfield creates understated
buildings, including many elegant and dignified museums, such as the
campus of the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri and the Des Moines
Public Library.Crisp and minimalist, his aesthetic (審美觀) is
timeless, rather than fashionable. As the Pritzker jury
wrote its words, “We do not see an instantly recognizable David
Chipperfield building in different cities, but different David Chipperfield
buildings designed specifically for each circumstance.”
How is the 2023 Pritzter winner feeling about being described as not
“instantly recognizable”?“I’m happy with that,” Chipperfield
said to the reporter.“The idea of the architect’s signature has become a
rather overstated ambition.”
A Chipperfield building is one that thoughtfully merges into its
environment, says architecture professor Mabel Wilson.“It’s also a
building that’s very simple and precise,” she told the reporter.“It
isn’t something that comes at you all at once but something that’s very
measured. And I think that kind of accuracy describes Chipperfield’s
practice.”
In 1997, Chipperfield’s firm was picked to rebuild Berlin’s
Neues Museum.Built in the mid-1800s, the museum was bombed nearly
to pieces during World War Ⅱ.“The building had stood as a ruin for more
than 50 years,” Chipperfield said in a 2011 TEDx talk.“History had
somehow left it behind.” Chipperfield preserved the remains as part of
the design.“That was an incredibly controversial decision and it put me in
conversation, let’s say, with the citizens of Berlin,” he
explained. The process is an example of the cooperative effort Chipperfield
sees as central to his practice.
In 2011 TEDx talk, Chipperfield scolded how so many buildings all
over the world contain the DNA of bad modern architecture, due to some
clients, a construction industry consumed with finishing fast and
architects unconcerned about building for the future.

I was a fifth-grader.Today was my birthday and I was going to hold a
slumber party (睡衣派對) at my house.
My best friend Jaime was the first to arrive, and then came Dawn,
Tamika, and Angie. As we waited for Nicole, we killed time by
admiring Angie’s new sunglasses.Angie was the first in our group to
score a pair of cool sunglasses from her parents. We walked to the
bathroom to ooh and ah over them as if they were decorated with
diamonds.I was trying them on when my mom interrupted us to announce
Nicole’s arrival.As a welcome gesture, I removed the sunglasses,
placed them on the bridge of Nicole’s nose, and gave her a heartfelt
hug.We then went to the basement for a board game. That was the last time
we each recalled seeing Angie’s sunglasses.
The next morning, all of my friends were organizing their
belongings before their parents picked them up.“I can’t find my
sunglasses,” Angie said. The panic in her voice was obvious.“I know I
put them in here.”Then, I asked my mom for an intervention.
“Calm down, girls,” she said.“Let’s retrace our steps.” My
mother’s advice led us all to the bathroom. The investigation was going
nowhere, and things really took a downturn when Angie turned on
Nicole.
“You took them,” Angie accused her.“I didn’t,” Nicole
said softly, shaking her head in protest.“I put them by the sink!I
didn’t steal them, Angie, I swear.”
The search for the sunglasses continued until the parents arrived to
pick up their daughters.Angie was the first to leave. She gave each of us a
hug goodbye — everyone except Nicole. After a week or so, there was
still no sign of the sunglasses.
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150左右;
One day, I was brushing my teeth before bed when something
behind the bathroom sink caught my eye.

The next day, I revealed everything to Angie and Nicole.

One day, I was brushing my teeth before bed when something
behind the bathroom sink caught my eye.I looked down and found the
sunglasses lying there. This was an area that, in our haste, would
have easily been overlooked during our initial search.Although we had
all seen Nicole put the sunglasses on, no one saw her take them off
and place them near the sink.I was so overjoyed that I nearly choked on
my toothbrush!
The next day, I revealed everything to Angie and Nicole.Nicole
was thankful that the misunderstanding had finally come to an end,
but she said she was even happier about the fact that I had stood by
her.It was Angie’s response that had thrown me for a loop:She said
that I was a good friend for standing by Nicole when she had written her
off too quick. She also said that she was sorry that her actions had made
my birthday party less enjoyable. All was forgiven, and in a few
days, we were back to normal and looking forward to the next slumber
party.
