  Belfast’s “Big Fish” has been providing locals and tourists with photo opportunities on the bank of the River Lagan since 1999.It was designed by native artist John Kindness,and is a representation of Irish legendary Salmon of Knowledge (知識鮭魚).
  As the legend goes, Finn McCool was sent to learn from wise old poet Finnegas, who had spent seven years fishing the River Boyne for the Salmon of Knowledge before he caught it.The fish was said to have acquired all its wisdom after eating hazelnuts (榛子) from a tree that contained knowledge after falling into the Well of Wisdom.
  The poet planned to eat the salmon and asked young Finn to get it ready.But as the boy cooked the salmon he burned his thumb and after putting his thumb in his mouth to ease the pain, acquired all its knowledge.It is said all this wisdom allowed Finn McCool to become the leader of famed mythological heroes the Fianna.
  John Kindness’ Big Fish is said to be his interpretation of the Salmon of Knowledge and each of the public artwork’s scales “tells a story about the city”.It also contains a time capsule storing information, images, and poetry on Belfast.
  The city icon was funded (資助) by Laganside Corporation, which was set up to regenerate the riverside in 1989, and the Big Lottery Fund through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.It was commissioned in 1999 to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan and the historic importance of the site where the River Farset, which gave Belfast its name, flows into it.Once flowing freely, the River Farset is now buried beneath the city’s Castle Street and High Street, but still flows into the Lagan through a tunnel.

  “There’s an antediluvial understanding of what tradition is,” says Rollins.“We think it’s old and what once was.Actually, traditions are always changing in history and we just fail to witness it.To survive, the tradition needs to be with the present and be looking toward the future.”
  Rollins was in charge of the exhibition “Immaterial Remains:Can You Preserve a Shadow?”, which aimed to not only display the art form but also focus on the question of how to preserve shadow puppetry in China.In the exhibition, the finely carved details of clothing, facial features, and hair were obvious in the shadows of the puppets, which were in motion (運動) as air flowed, bringing them to life on the walls.Samples of the dried cowhide (牛皮) used to make the puppets were available for visitors to touch and feel.A video demonstrated how the puppets are made and operated.Rollins notes,“If you can eat with chopsticks, you too can work a shadow puppet.”

designed by native artist John Kindness,and is a representation of Irish
legendary Salmon of Knowledge (知識鮭魚).

poet Finnegas, who had spent seven years fishing the River Boyne for the
