資源簡介 Section Ⅲ Integrated skillsⅠ.閱讀理解A Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most people. In fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school. It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case in America. In the 19th century, a usual American activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there was no television at the time, nor movie theatres, nor World Wide Web, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source of pleasure,of self-education,of connection to other people or to the world beyond one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an individual one,and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life. How did things change? Why are most Americans no longer comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poem has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems? There are, I believe, three factors: poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third. The world surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the 20th century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavourable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, and that they belonged where other difficult-to-read things belonged. Poets failed the reader, and so did teachers. They want their students to know something about the skills of a poem, and they want their students to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs when teachers push these concerns on their high school students is that young people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.1.Why is reading poems thought to be a social act in the 19th century?A.Because it built a link among people.B.Because it helped unite a community.C.Because it was a source of self-education.D.Because it was a source of pleasure.2.What does the underlined word “diversion” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A.Concentration. At Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, it started as an activity spread by word of mouth, and later became popular across the university. David Crawford, the director of recreation (娛樂活動) services at Saint Martin’s University, felt the sport could have a large success on their campus. “I’ve played floor hockey (曲棍球) over the years, but was always annoyed with the equipment. When I came across floorball, I immediately saw the potential benefits it had in relation to overall satisfaction,” said Crawford. One of the many perks of offering floorball at your university is that it offers players the same style of sport as hockey, without the high risk of concussions (腦震蕩) and other head-related injuries. “When playing floorball, players don’t wear helmets, gloves or any of the other equipment that’s needed in hockey. It is recommended that players wear eye protection and a mouth guard, but it is not required,” said Crawford. While traditional marketing strategies are taken by Saint Martin’s University to publicize the sport, informal sessions have really been what spread the word about the popularity and benefits of the sport. These informal sessions include anything from offering the sport as an option at monthly “late night” events to having the basketball and volleyball teams use floorball as conditioning practice. Crawford explained how it is important to understand how beneficial the sport can be if offered at other universities. It is inexpensive, it won’t damage your floors and you can play it on nearly any surface. “If you have a floor hockey program and it’s in decline (衰落), you may find with a switch to floorball there may be more interest from players who aren’t currently playing,” said Crawford. “While floorball will attract the hockey crowd, it will also attract students looking for something new and different.”9.What aspect of floor hockey was Crawford dissatisfied with?A.Its rules are too strict.B.It needs a lot of players.C.Its styles are too traditional.D.It requires several pieces of equipment.10.What does the underlined word “perks” in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Purposes. B.Examples.C.Advantages. D.Challenges.11.What is a more effective method of publicizing floorball at the university?A.Using traditional media.B.Setting up floorball teams.C.Organizing informal activities.D.Setting aside a field for floorball.12.What opinion does Crawford express in the last paragraph?A.Floorball may be popular with new players.B.Floorball may replace floor hockey at the campus.C.There may be a need for saving floor hockey programs.D.There may be more floorball matches between universities.D As I was doing my housework yesterday, I chose a playlist by Jeanette, a Spanish pop singer. As I listened to her, I suddenly became aware that Jeanette was singing in English and French, so I got excited. The song that was playing only contained one French lyric. Even so, this was enough to make me appreciate my knowledge of languages more and made me realize that people like Jeanette and I can share our love for languages through music. Because my family comes from Mexico, I am lucky to be bilingual (會說兩種語言的), speaking both in Spanish and English. Furthermore, I’ve been learning French since I was twelve years old and plan to be a French and Spanish teacher in the future. I’m so thankful that my parents insisted on speaking only in Spanish to me growing up. I couldn’t help thinking about how there is a certain quality in Spanish and French in particular that can attract the English-dominant (英語主導的) music industry. The Spanish-language pop song Mi Gente (My People) by Colombian-born J.Balvin, featuring French artist Willy William, represents a special moment in music, a new sound of a Latino culture on the rise and being embraced (欣然接受) proudly. Even though Willy William only sings one French lyric in the song, French learners like me are content that they can understand that one line. Furthermore, native French and Spanish speakers should feel proud that their language is included in such a popular industry. I am proud to hear Spanish songs on English-speaking radio stations. We don’t listen to songs simply because we like the rhythm; we actually appreciate the words. I encourage my fellow students to continue to learn a second or even third language and immerse (沉浸) themselves in the culture. Once you get to the level where you understand what an artist is saying in a foreign language, the feeling of pride is irreplaceable. Plus, what better way to share your love for French, Spanish, Italian, etc. than through the universal language of music?13.Why was the author excited when listening to Jeanette?A.She found Jeanette’s song was her favourite.B.She felt inspired to explore a new language.C.She realized she had a great interest in music.D.She fully understood what Jeanette was singing.14.What is the author’s dream?A.To come back to Mexico.B.To teach French and Spanish.C.To become a bilingual singer.D.To learn more foreign languages.15.Why does the author mention J.Balvin’s “Mi Gente” in Paragraph 3?A.To highly appreciate J.Balvin’s talent in music.B.To explain why English songs win wide support.C.To compare J.Balvin’s music style with that of Willy William.D.To show Spanish and French can be popular in the music industry.16.What does the author stress in the last paragraph?A.It is significant to learn and master new languages.B.It is a good way to learn a new language through music.C.It is a must to understand lyrics before listening to foreign songs.D.It is helpful for teachers to test students’ language skills through music.Ⅱ.閱讀七選五 Saving the environment might seem like a difficult thing. This poem describes a situation where the poet needs to choose fromtwo roads. The “roads” not only refer to the real roads he meets whilewalking in the yellow woods, but also symbolize different directions inlife. The choice has such a big impact on our lives that we hesitate a lot atthe crossroads. In my opinion, all of us are a traveler on our journey throughlife.Once we make a choice, we have few chances to go back, so whatwe need to do is embrace the future actively rather than sigh for the past.課時檢測·提能力培育學科素養3Ⅰ.閱讀理解A Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most people. Infact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school. It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the casein America. In the 19th century, a usual American activity was to sitaround the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that therewas no television at the time, nor movie theatres, nor World WideWeb, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source ofpleasure,of self-education,of connection to other people or to the worldbeyond one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as well as anindividual one,and perhaps even more social than individual. Writingpoems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by thefireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life. How did things change? Why are most Americans no longercomfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poemhas nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems? There are, I believe, three factors: poets, teachers, and weourselves. Of these, the least important is the third. The worldsurrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed thepoem. Early in the 20th century, poetry in English headed into directionsunfavourable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were notfor the fireside or the easy chair at night, and that they belonged whereother difficult-to-read things belonged. Poets failed the reader, and so did teachers. They want their studentsto know something about the skills of a poem, and they want theirstudents to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs whenteachers push these concerns on their high school students is that youngpeople decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles. 1. At Saint Martin’s University in Lacey,Washington, it started as an activity spread by word of mouth, and laterbecame popular across the university. David Crawford, the director of recreation (娛樂活動) servicesat Saint Martin’s University, felt the sport could have a large success ontheir campus. “I’ve played floor hockey (曲棍球) over the years, but wasalways annoyed with the equipment. When I came across floorball, Iimmediately saw the potential benefits it had in relation to overallsatisfaction,” said Crawford. One of the many perks of offering floorball at your university is that itoffers players the same style of sport as hockey, without the high risk ofconcussions (腦震蕩) and other head-related injuries. “When playingfloorball, players don’t wear helmets, gloves or any of the otherequipment that’s needed in hockey. It is recommended that players weareye protection and a mouth guard, but it is not required,” saidCrawford. While traditional marketing strategies are taken by Saint Martin’sUniversity to publicize the sport, informal sessions have really been whatspread the word about the popularity and benefits of the sport. Theseinformal sessions include anything from offering the sport as an option atmonthly “late night” events to having the basketball and volleyballteams use floorball as conditioning practice. Crawford explained how it is important to understand how beneficialthe sport can be if offered at other universities. It is inexpensive, it won’tdamage your floors and you can play it on nearly any surface. “If you have a floor hockey program and it’s in decline (衰落),you may find with a switch to floorball there may be more interest fromplayers who aren’t currently playing,” said Crawford. “While floorballwill attract the hockey crowd, it will also attract students looking forsomething new and different.” 9. As I listened to her, I suddenly becameaware that Jeanette was singing in English and French, so I got excited. The song that was playing only contained one French lyric. Even so, thiswas enough to make me appreciate my knowledge of languages more andmade me realize that people like Jeanette and I can share our love forlanguages through music. Because my family comes from Mexico, I am lucky to be bilingual(會說兩種語言的), speaking both in Spanish and English.Furthermore, I’ve been learning French since I was twelve years old andplan to be a French and Spanish teacher in the future. I’m so thankful thatmy parents insisted on speaking only in Spanish to me growing up. I couldn’t help thinking about how there is a certain quality in Spanishand French in particular that can attract the English-dominant (英語主導的) music industry. The Spanish-language pop song Mi Gente (MyPeople) by Colombian-born J. Balvin, featuring French artist WillyWilliam, represents a special moment in music, a new sound of aLatino culture on the rise and being embraced (欣然接受) proudly.Even though Willy William only sings one French lyric in the song,French learners like me are content that they can understand that one line.Furthermore, native French and Spanish speakers should feel proud thattheir language is included in such a popular industry. I am proud to hearSpanish songs on English-speaking radio stations. We don’t listen to songs simply because we like the rhythm; weactually appreciate the words. I encourage my fellow students to continueto learn a second or even third language and immerse (沉浸)themselves in the culture. Once you get to the level where you understandwhat an artist is saying in a foreign language, the feeling of pride isirreplaceable.
