  On an icy-cold winter morning in Swan Creek Park, Scott Murdock was the first to show up.As he walked over the fresh snow with a rubbish bag, he’d already been searching the park before anyone arrived, informing organizers which areas had the most rubbish.
  That’s Scott Murdock.After five years of volunteering for Metro Parks’ CHIP-in!program, he’s spent 4,760 official hours in volunteering for parks around Tacoma, a port city in Washington.
  “I was born in Seattle, and grew up in Olympia.Apart from three years’ working in Idaho, I’ve never lived outside Washington State,” explains Murdock.“Growing up I went on a lot of long walks with the Boy Scouts (童子軍).”
  Because of his busy working life, he almost gave up the hobby.When he retired in 2014, he realized he wanted to get back to hiking — and to give back to those mountains, trails and forests he loved as a boy.
  That year on Parks Appreciation Day, he volunteered for CHIP-in!in Alderwood Park.“It had a lot of ivy (常春藤) and blackberries,” remembers Murdock.“So I said I’d like to take care of it, to give back.”
  Since then Murdock has served nine years as a park steward, a volunteer who commits to regular monthly hours at a particular park and helps organize other volunteers.Spending up to 20 hours a week working in parks as he does, educating the public is also a part of the job.One day, while clearing away blackberries, a local resident came up and complained that he was taking away all the habitat for the birds.
  Murdock smiles.“I explained to her that what I was doing would let native vegetation grow better, which provides much better food for birds than blackberries,” he says.
  Other benefits of clearing invasive things include creating more trails in Metro Parks, thus protecting plants from human feet and encouraging walkers to explore.Murdock has also found that bringing back wildlife also discourages unwanted human use, like teenage parties or rubbish.

  A start-up based in California is well on its way to doing what seems like magic: creating meat from the air.Air Protein has created non-animal-based meat and seafood using nothing but microbes (微生物), water, and elements found in the air.
  The idea of making food from the air first came from NASA in the 1960s.Researchers were looking for a way to recycle the carbon dioxide (CO2) that astronauts breathe out while on a mission (太空飛行任務(wù)), and realized they could use it to create edible material.But NASA soon gave up the idea and moved on to other plans.In 2019, Air Protein founder Dr Lisa Dyson picked up where NASA left off.
  NASA researchers found that certain microbes could change CO2 into a protein when mixed with water and energy and this is the technology that Air Protein uses.Once the protein is taken out of the air, the company then turns it into a powder that is used to create proteins that mimic the taste, texture, and look of animal proteins.
  It was witnessing the consequences of Hurricane Katrina that led Dyson to begin thinking seriously about climate change and what she could do to reduce its effect.
  Dyson began to take an interest in the food industry because of the large amount of greenhouse gases it produces.It is the meat industry in particular that is responsible for the most emissions.Yet meat consumption is still growing all over the world, and indeed the world population is growing, with estimates of a population of 10 billion people by 2050.
  Air Protein’s solution could help because the process of making the meat uses CO2 already in the atmosphere.The energy the start-up uses is all renewable wind and solar power.Making meat from the air uses 1.5 million times less land than the beef industry does and uses 15,000 times less water.These are both resources that are really needed to fight climate change.
  “We need to produce food in a way that isn’t damaging the planet,” said Dyson.“We don’t have a choice.I think there’s a bright future when we bring innovation to the problem and change how our food is made.”
