Tu Youyou, well-known at home and abroad, was born in 1930 China. With a passion for medicine, she graduated from Peking University in 1955, devoting herself to traditional herb research.
Putting her heart and soul into blending Chinese and Western medicine, she overcame difficulties by testing 380 herbal extracts. Her persistence made a lifesaving breakthrough in 1971 by discovering artemisinin, which has saved millions globally. This achievement led to her receiving the 2015 Nobel Prize.
Universally regarded as a pioneer, Tu set an example to scientists by rejecting fame and wealth. Her work has had a profound impact on global health, inspiring generations to pursue science selflessly.
