  Eight years ago, Al Nixon decided to begin each day from a bench with a spectacular view of St. Petersburg’s waterfront in Florida.“I call it ‘life rising’ because watching a sunrise makes me feel positive and centered before I start my day,” says Nixon, who works for the city’s water department. It is Nixon’s own version of daily motivation.
A year later, a woman stopped to say hello, and she said something that changed his perspective on his daily ritual.“She said, ‘You know, every morning when I see you sitting here, I know that everything is going to be OK,’” Nixon recalls.“That was when I knew: I needed to pay attention to the people walking past. I needed to make eye contact and let people know that we matter to each other.”
Instead of staring straight ahead at the waterfront, Nixon started smiling at people and striking up conversations. And pretty soon, more than a few early risers began joining him on the bench, sometimes unburdening themselves and telling him their relationship, career or personal problems. “I was happy to listen. I wanted them to walk away knowing they didn’t have to feel lonely,”Nixon, now 59, says. “When you’re in your 50s and 60s or beyond, a lot of people feel their purpose hasn’t been fulfilled. At this stage in life, this is definitely my purpose.”
So, every morning, weather permitting, Nixon rises at 4:30 a.m. He puts on a hat, sips a cup of coffee, and then drives seven miles to the waterfront, where he’ll stay for two hours. His presence, his openness to listen and his kindness towards strangers have led them to nickname him the Sunshine Mayor.
No matter what problem a person wants to air, Nixon lends an ear. But some people just sit down and don’t want to talk or share stories. They simply want to sit next to someone and share the silence. “A woman stopped once and said, ‘I just want to sit here with you,’”Nixon recalls.“We stared at the water for an hour, and then she said thank you and walked away. She just wanted a moment of peace and to know she wasn’t alone. And in that moment, in that hour, on that morning, she truly wasn’t.”

  Doctors can use AI to show your risk of lung (肺) cancer with a single CT scan (掃描檢查).
“By catching lung cancer early, we can increase overall survival,”said Dr Florian Fintelmann, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School.
Researchers recently developed Sybil, an AI model that can tell someone’s future lung cancer risk in advance according to a single CT scan.A study on the model and the algorithm (算法) itself was developed by the Mass General Cancer Center and MIT.
The study on Sybil found the model can accurately predict (準(zhǔn)確預(yù)測) lung cancer risk, and discover things doctors can’t see. Sybil was tested using three different sets of information, which included more than 20,000 CT scans.The algorithm doesn’t need any additional information like risk factors, age, or gender.
“Sybil can make accurate predictions based on a single time point. Other tools usually require at least a couple of CT scans to compare, looking for differences between them,” Dr Fintelmann said.
“One of the questions I sometimes get is ‘Will this replace the doctor?’ And it will certainly not,” he said. While AI can predict your future risk, doctors will still be needed to decide where the cancer is, what it looks like, and possible treatment plans.
However, it may take some time before this tool can be used to examine your next CT scan. “Right now, the Sybil algorithm is not being used in hospitals because it hasn’t received clearance (許可) from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration),”said Dr Fintelmann.
So what’s next?
“Studies are being done to look at how helpful it is to use Sybil in making decisions about lung cancer screening,” Dr Fintelmann said.He said they also want to enlarge the pool of CT scans used to train the algorithm, as he sees the possibility of problems based on the information that has been used so far.

A study has found that people who appear to be often distracted have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and manipulate (操作) it mentally.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks, such as following teachers’ instructions or remembering sentences.
During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one or two simple tasks, during which, researchers checked if their minds were wandering.
At the end, the volunteer participants measured their own working memory capacity by their ability to remember a series of letters interspersed (插入) with simple maths questions.
Professor Daniel Levinson said that those with higher working memory capacity reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not suffer.
The results, published online in the journal, Psychological Science, appear to confirm former research that found working memory allows humans to deal with multiple thoughts simultaneously (同時地).
Dr Jonathan Smallwood said,“What this study seems to suggest is that, when the task isn’t very difficult, people who have additional working memory resources use them to think about other things besides what they’re doing.”
Working memory capacity is also associated with general measures of intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores.
Dr Smallwood added:“Our results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite often in daily life — when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower — are probably supported by working memory?”
“Their brains are trying to allocate (分配) resources to the most pressing problems.”

Researchers recently developed Sybil, an AI model that can tell
someone’s future lung cancer risk in advance according to a single CT

tested using three different sets of information, which included more than

“Sybil can make accurate predictions based on a single time point.
Other tools usually require at least a couple of CT scans to compare,
looking for differences between them,” Dr Fintelmann said.
“One of the questions I sometimes get is ‘Will this replace the
doctor?’ And it will certainly not,” he said. While AI can predict
your future risk, doctors will still be needed to decide where the cancer
is, what it looks like, and possible treatment plans.
However, it may take some time before this tool can be used to
examine your next CT scan. “Right now, the Sybil algorithm is not
being used in hospitals because it hasn’t received clearance (許可)
from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration),”said Dr
Fintelmann.
So what’s next?
“Studies are being done to look at how helpful it is to use Sybil in
making decisions about lung cancer screening,” Dr Fintelmann said.He
said they also want to enlarge the pool of CT scans used to train the
algorithm, as he sees the possibility of problems based on the information
that has been used so far.

suggests.
A study has found that people who appear to be often distracted have
more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of
information in their heads and manipulate (操作) it mentally.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a
variety of tasks, such as following teachers’ instructions or
remembering sentences.
During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one or two
simple tasks, during which, researchers checked if their minds were
wandering.
At the end, the volunteer participants measured their own working
memory capacity by their ability to remember a series of letters

Professor Daniel Levinson said that those with higher working
memory capacity reported “more mind wandering during these simple

The results, published online in the journal, Psychological
Science, appear to confirm former research that found working memory
allows humans to deal with multiple thoughts simultaneously (同時地).
Dr Jonathan Smallwood said,“What this study seems to suggest is
that, when the task isn’t very difficult, people who have additional
working memory resources use them to think about other things besides
what they’re doing.”
Working memory capacity is also associated with general measures of
intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores.
Dr Smallwood added:“Our results suggest the sorts of planning
that people do quite often in daily life — when they are on the bus, when
they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower — are probably

I remembered that I only added a name to the list when someone had

she asked me about my birthday party. Never once did she step into the
circle of kids surrounding me at lunchtime. And once she even helped me
carry my schoolbag while I held my science project walking to our third-
floor classroom.
I guess I had forgotten to invite her simply because she wasn’t
pushing to be invited. I accepted the gift from Sarah and asked her to join

“I can’t stay,” she said, looking down.“My dad’s waiting
in the car.”
“Can you come in for a little while?”I nearly begged.By now I
felt pretty bad about forgetting to invite her and did want her to stay.
