PRACTITIONERS
Jacqueline Felice de Almania (c.1322) highlights the suspicion that women practicing medicine faced. Born to a Jewish family in Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and performed surgery. In 1322 she was tried for practicing unlawfully. In spite of the court hearing testimonials (證明) of her ability as a doctor, she was banned from medicine.
James Barry(c.1789 — 1865) was born Margaret Bulkley in Ireland but, dressed as a man, she was accepted by Edinburgh University to study medicine. She qualified as a surgeon in 1813, then joined the British Army, serving overseas. Barry retired in 1859, having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a man.
Tan Yunxian (1461 — 1554) was a Chinese physician who learned her skills from her grandparents. Chinese women at the time could not serve apprenticeships (學徒期) with doctors. However, Tan passed the official exam. Tan treated women from all walks of life. In 1511, Tan wrote a book, Sayings of a Female Doctor, describing her life as a physician.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831 — 1895) worked as a nurse for eight years before studying in medical college in Boston in 1860. Four years later, she was the first African American woman to receive a medical degree. She moved to Virginia in 1865, where she provided medical care to freed slaves.

Two years ago, from February 2016 to January 2017, I went on a student exchange program to Auckland in New Zealand. I chose to go to New Zealand because firstly, it is a safe country and secondly, I wanted to go to a country that is culturally different from my own.
I started considering going on a student exchange program after making a backpack trip around the world when I was a freshman (大一新生) at Waseda University. I met so many people of different backgrounds during my trip. When I was travelling, I realized the importance of speaking English. I felt that if I knew English, I could communicate and make friends with a lot of people around the world. Then, I made up my mind to work hard after coming back from the trip.
When I was at Auckland University of Technology, I mainly took classes related to language pedagogy (教學法). Unlike at Waseda University, many of the classes at Auckland University of Technology were held in small class size, usually a class size of 15 students to a teacher. In addition, rather than one-way passive learning, students were required to actively raise their opinions and take part in group discussions in class. The classes were also practical in nature and required a lot of preparation.
Spending a year studying abroad has made me feel more confident in communicating in English. I was also able to meet people of different backgrounds thanks to the exchange paring to the past, I am now a better listener and also better at voicing my opinions. Studying abroad does not only improve my language skills, but also makes me grow as a person.
24.Why did the author choose to go to New Zealand?
A.To do his research program. B.To experience its culture.
C.To volunteer in a safe country. D.To start his trips around the world.
25.What did the author decide to do after traveling abroad?
A.Avoid people from different backgrounds. B.Further his study during his trip.
C.Make more friends in his new university. D.Make efforts to learn English well.
26.How do the classes at Auckland differ from those at Waseda?
A.They are smaller. B.They have fewer discussions.
C.They are quieter. D.They call for fewer efforts.
27.What can we say about the author from the last paragraph?
A.He wants to teach language skills. B.He decides to study abroad again.
C.He feels thankful for the program. D.He listens more than he speaks.

In 2000, a group of innovators in Denmark came up with a different kind of library — the Human Library. It has since transformed into a global phenomenon where “readers” can check out a human “book”. Each “title” offers an opportunity for dialogue over difficult questions, a process which the library hopes will help us all “un-judge” one another.
The first human library was organized by Ronni Abergel, his brother, and two colleagues. As a four-day event at a festival, the project was experimental. However, over a thousand readers came to read the human books available. The books themselves were chosen to represent often misunderstood groups. The initial library was a success leading to the foundation of the Human Library Organization, which has since carried on the lending of human books.
People can be part of the Human Library in two ways. One can volunteer to be a book and to offer first-hand knowledge of an experience or identity. Among the Human Library are books entitled “Alcoholic” “Depression” and so on. While these titles may seem simple and direct, the Human Library hopes readers will pick a topic but come to know the book for so much more than just the cover and title. Volunteer books agree to share their experiences — a commitment which requires patience, empathy (共情), and a level of comfort in sharing.
Another way to experience the Human Library is as a reader. Readers check out books for a certain amount of time. While being respectful, the library creates a space where readers can listen to the stories of books. Readers are encouraged to ask the difficult questions they always wondered but never had a chance to ask. Specifically, the library hopes it will be “a place where people who would otherwise never talk find room for conversation”.
The Human Library Organization today holds pop-up events around the world and even has permanent borrowing locations in several cities. They also work with companies as a rather unique provider of diversity and inclusion training.
28.What can we learn about the first human library?
A.It was well received. B.It had only four workers.
C.It was misunderstood. D.It was a weekly project.
29.What is required of a volunteer book?
A.Eagerness to learn. B.Painful experiences.
C.Willingness to share. D.Remarkable achievements.
30.How does the Human Library help readers?
A.By creating a space for them to talk freely.
B.By encouraging them to open up to strangers.
C.By showing them how to be respectful of others.
D.By teaching them to solve difficult questions alone.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The origin of the Human Library B.How to manage a Human Library
C.Borrowing people instead of books D.How to get along with human books

Sports movies are fun, but have you ever watched a sports movie that doesn’t even seem like it’s about sports? Let me give you an option, Remember The Titans. A high school football team is forced to integrate, bringing together players from different racial backgrounds. Coach Herman Boone, played by Denzel Washington, takes charge and helps the team overcome their differences and work together. Amidst challenges and resistance, the players learn to respect and support each other. Through hard work and determination, they become a united team, overcoming prejudice and achieving success on the field.
At the beginning of the movie, a white person murders a black person and there’s a riot (騷亂) going on. Debatable as it is, to be honest, we rarely get to see movies like Remember The Titans now. This is a movie that shows hard work and love can triumph over anything in life and we can feel the actual potential of the human spirit and courage.
What makes Remember The Titans an instant classic? It is part heart-warming drama, part true story, part action, all of this is mixed with a banger soundtrack. This is the kind of film that actually transcends all genres, which is not very common today. When was the last time you came across such a movie that impressed you so deeply?
Considering the actual script of the movie, it was an impossible task to actually release the movie. No one was willing to publish the movie. The movie’s writer Gregory Allen Howard was refused from every movie house because of the race issue highlighted in the movie. Through lots of struggles, the movie was adapted by Disney, even though it was toned down to make it more “Family-Friendly”.
I have seen a lot of movies till now, can’t even begin to count them but there are some movies that take your emotions on a roller coaster. They are more than movies actually, you become a part of them as they become a part of you. Remember The Titans is that kind of movie and I believe that every viewer can learn some life-changing things from it.
32.What do the viewers think of the start of the movie?
A.It causes different opinions. B.It is a part of failure.
C.It is the most appealing part. D.It lays the foundation for success.
33.What can we learn about the movie from the passage?
A.Denzel Washington is a persuasive coach.
B.The purpose of it is to protest the violence.
C.The twisted plot is attractive to the viewers.
D.It’s released effortlessly at the very beginning.
34.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “was toned down” in Paragraph 4?
A.was tolerated unwillingly B.was accepted sincerely
C.was criticized aggressively D.was made less offensive
35.What may the following paragraphs tell us?
A.The reasons for the movie’s popularity. B.The specific lessons the movie conveys.
C.The introduction to Denzel Washington. D.The main plot and characters of the movie.

Getting and staying focused can be a challenge even in the best of times. But with everything going on in the world, concentrating can often feel downright impossible. Below are some tips to help you find your flow.
Distract (使分心) your brain. Schedule into every workday some breaks from all that focusing and allow your mind to travel into what’s called the “default (默認的) mode network” for a bit of freestyle activities. 36 It’s the place where our minds find innovation and creativity and often make better decisions than the focused mind.
37 This involves first turning your attention inward. Try traveling with your mind to someplace enjoyable — maybe it’s a walk through an imaginary forest or sunbathing on a warm sandy beach. Doing this several times a day can offer your mind a fresh approach to the job at hand.
Block interruptions before diving into deep work. 38 To help, turn off text messaging, notifications and social media alerts. Be vital when you want a deep dive into focus. Your important work benefits when you shut off or put away your phone and other screens.
Know your body clock. Whether you are sharp in the morning or a night owl, don’t spend your day — in particular your peak brain hours — doing busywork. 39
Try new hobbies. Engaging in hobbies not only is fun but can help us come up with new solutions to problems we’re facing at work or home. 40
A.Try to daydream what happened.
B.We try to obtain focus but in vain.
C.Engage in positive constructive daydreaming.
D.Instead, reserve your best brain time for the big stuff.
E.This network of the brain circuit is where magic happens.
F.Our days are filled with distractions, from others and ourselves.
G.Allowing your mind time to play is another way to invite innovation.

I was born and raised in the Netherlands, and I had always lived there until I was 30 years old. In the Dutch 41 , I was sociable and intelligent. And it never occurred to me that this could be different in another culture. 42 , the first time I moved to the US, I felt emotionally out of 43 on many occasions. I want to 44 this with three true stories.
At the start of my stay at the University of Michigan, one professor asked me to join a seminar on emotions. I introduced myself in an 45 way as “interested in culture and emotion”. The professor then added my self-introduction to 46 American standards, saying that I was one of the world’s experts on the topic. In response, I looked down in 47 , thinking “expert” was a big word.
We lived in North Carolina and had friends coming over to dinner. Conversations were lively and there was a lot of sharing. When my guests left, they thanked me for dinner. My heart 48 , because “thanking for dinner” in the Netherlands means that the relationship is distant.
I wrote on my student’s paper that part of her paper was “boring”, then I told my undergraduate students at my US university that they should reflect better and 49 more readings. In their teaching 50 , students wrote that I was “rude”.
No one would suggest the Netherlands and the US are dramatically different cultures. The professor meant to make me feel good, but instead made me 51 . My friends meant to show 52 , but I thought they were distancing themselves from us. I meant to give my students the comments to which they were 53 , but they felt it was rude. Where did it go wrong?
We think emotions are feelings deep inside us, but 54 , we always have our emotions in interactions with others. Our emotions are not 55 mental feelings, but deeply rooted in the culture where we are raised.

Tanghulu, a conventional Chinese snack 56 (basic) made of sugar-coated haws (山楂) or other fruit on a stick, has drawn more and more teenagers around the world. According to the data covering social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, tanghulu 57 (be) the most searched term in the frozen and convenient food category in the first half of 2023 in Korea.
The sweet treat arose in China during the Song Dynasty, 58 Emperor Guangzong’s favorite concubine (妃) fell ill and a doctor suggested she eat hawthorn berries 59 (fry) in brown sugar every day for a fortnight. When the concubine miraculously (奇跡般的) recovered, the candied fruit gained instant popularity across the country, 60 (late) becoming one of the best-selling street — food snacks in China.
Because of its glassy texture and marble like appearance, it is so visually 61 (appeal) that many like to post 62 (video) featuring the treat being consumed and share the new recipes for it. According to CCTV, unlike the tanghulu made of haws in China, the most popular one in Korea is made of orange slices, whose price amounts 63 22 yuan.
Tanghulu’s recent surge in various countries can be attributed to multiple factors, including the social media 64 (expose) among teenagers and its catering to their affection with pretty food. All in all, who would refuse such 65 awesome flavor?

第二節(滿分25分)
  閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
December strode (闊步走) into the mountains of Colorado, shooting snowflakes and blowing them into a thick blanket of white. As Christmas approached, the farmers there closed down most wooden houses for a holiday cheer. Not all were closed, however. There was still work to be done, and someone had to stay. That someone was Slim Carter.
Old Jake, another farmer there, had offered to keep him company, but Slim shook his head. “After all, a young man like me has got plenty of Christmases ahead,” Slim joked. Before Jake offered to stay again, Slim hurried on. “I’ll just have a private Christmas this year, and that’s the way I want it.” So he was left alone at the house. Alone, with his horse in the farm and the wolves roaring in the forest nearby.
Truth was, Slim had decided not to celebrate Christmas at all. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Christmas. In fact, his Christmas memories were good ones. His mother would fill their house with the light of candles and the smell of candy. His father would make their Christmas tree hunt an all-day, men-only affair. Slim smiled as he remembered sitting on the broad back of their horse with the freshly cut tree along behind. Back home, they would cover the tree with paper snowflakes and home-made decorations and sing all the Christmas songs they knew. And that’s the way he liked it. Those were the memories he pulled out on nights when he was working alone. Such memories warmed him inside, even if his outsides were aching with cold.
This was Slim’s first year away from home. “Christmas is nothing if not spent with family,” Slim declared to the empty house. That was the real reason he’d sent Jake away. He figured he would handle Christmas better if he just pretended it was an ordinary winter workday.
But on Christmas Eve, as Slim headed back with snow beneath his feet and stars overhead, his head hung low. It was Christmas, even without the tree and the gifts. Christmas, and he was all alone.
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150左右;
2.請按如下格式作答。
Then he remembered decorating the tree with his family again.

While singing to his decorated Christmas tree, Slim heard a knock on the door.

第二節
Then he remembered decorating the tree with his family again. Slim changed his mind, and decided to have a simple Christmas. He went out, looking for a Christmas tree. He swung an axe at the tree. The tree fell! After doing this, he shouldered the tree and walked towards the farm. On the way back, he heard many Christmas songs, which made him happy. After he returned to the farm, he put stars on the top of the tree, hung colored balls on the tree, and decorated the Christmas tree.
While singing to his decorated Christmas tree, Slim heard a knock on the door. He opened the door and was surprised to see old Jake. Old Jake was covered with snow. Jake went into the house and said to Slim, “I felt lonely this day, so I decided to come back and spend this Christmas with you. May I?” Slim listened and shed tears of gratitude. So the two lonely people spent a happy and unforgettable Christmas together.

PRACTITIONERS
Jacqueline Felice de Almania (c.1322) highlights the suspicion
that women practicing medicine faced. Born to a Jewish family in
Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and
performed surgery. In 1322 she was tried for practicing unlawfully.
In spite of the court hearing testimonials (證明) of her ability as a
doctor, she was banned from medicine.
James Barry(c.1789 — 1865) was born Margaret Bulkley in
Ireland but, dressed as a man, she was accepted by Edinburgh
University to study medicine. She qualified as a surgeon in 1813, then
joined the British Army, serving overseas. Barry retired in 1859,
having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a
man.
Tan Yunxian (1461 — 1554) was a Chinese physician who
learned her skills from her grandparents. Chinese women at the time could
not serve apprenticeships (學徒期) with doctors. However, Tan
passed the official exam. Tan treated women from all walks of life. In
1511, Tan wrote a book, Sayings of a Female Doctor, describing her
life as a physician.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831 — 1895) worked as a nurse for
eight years before studying in medical college in Boston in 1860. Four
years later, she was the first African American woman to receive a
medical degree. She moved to Virginia in 1865, where she provided
medical care to freed slaves.

Two years ago, from February 2016 to January 2017, I went on a
student exchange program to Auckland in New Zealand. I chose to go to
New Zealand because firstly, it is a safe country and secondly, I wanted to go to a country that is culturally different from my own.
I started considering going on a student exchange program after
making a backpack trip around the world when I was a freshman (大一新
生) at Waseda University. I met so many people of different backgrounds
during my trip. When I was travelling, I realized the importance of
speaking English. I felt that if I knew English, I could communicate and
make friends with a lot of people around the world. Then, I made up my
mind to work hard after coming back from the trip.
When I was at Auckland University of Technology, I mainly took
classes related to language pedagogy (教學法). Unlike at Waseda
University, many of the classes at Auckland University of Technology
were held in small class size, usually a class size of 15 students to a
teacher. In addition, rather than one-way passive learning, students
were required to actively raise their opinions and take part in group
discussions in class. The classes were also practical in nature and required
a lot of preparation.
Spending a year studying abroad has made me feel more confident in
communicating in English. I was also able to meet people of different
backgrounds thanks to the exchange paring to the past, I
am now a better listener and also better at voicing my opinions. Studying
abroad does not only improve my language skills, but also makes me
grow as a person.

In 2000, a group of innovators in Denmark came up with a different
kind of library — the Human Library. It has since transformed into a
global phenomenon where “readers” can check out a human “book”.
Each “title” offers an opportunity for dialogue over difficult questions,
a process which the library hopes will help us all “un-judge” one
another.
The first human library was organized by Ronni Abergel, his
brother, and two colleagues. As a four-day event at a festival, the
project was experimental. However, over a thousand readers came to
read the human books available. The books themselves were chosen to
represent often misunderstood groups. The initial library was a success
leading to the foundation of the Human Library Organization, which has
since carried on the lending of human books.
People can be part of the Human Library in two ways. One can
volunteer to be a book and to offer first-hand knowledge of an experience
or identity. Among the Human Library are books entitled “Alcoholic”
“Depression” and so on. While these titles may seem simple and
direct, the Human Library hopes readers will pick a topic but come to
know the book for so much more than just the cover and title. Volunteer
books agree to share their experiences — a commitment which requires
patience, empathy (共情), and a level of comfort in sharing.
Another way to experience the Human Library is as a reader. Readers
check out books for a certain amount of time. While being respectful, the library creates a space where readers can listen to the stories of books.
Readers are encouraged to ask the difficult questions they always
wondered but never had a chance to ask. Specifically, the library hopes
it will be “a place where people who would otherwise never talk find
room for conversation”.
The Human Library Organization today holds pop-up events around
the world and even has permanent borrowing locations in several cities.
They also work with companies as a rather unique provider of diversity and

Sports movies are fun, but have you ever watched a sports movie
that doesn’t even seem like it’s about sports? Let me give you an
option, Remember The Titans. A high school football team is forced to
integrate, bringing together players from different racial backgrounds.
Coach Herman Boone, played by Denzel Washington, takes charge and
helps the team overcome their differences and work together. Amidst
challenges and resistance, the players learn to respect and support each
other. Through hard work and determination, they become a united
team, overcoming prejudice and achieving success on the field.
At the beginning of the movie, a white person murders a black
person and there’s a riot (騷亂) going on. Debatable as it is, to be
honest, we rarely get to see movies like Remember The Titans now. This
is a movie that shows hard work and love can triumph over anything in life
and we can feel the actual potential of the human spirit and courage.
What makes Remember The Titans an instant classic? It is part heart-
warming drama, part true story, part action, all of this is mixed with a
banger soundtrack. This is the kind of film that actually transcends all
genres, which is not very common today. When was the last time you
came across such a movie that impressed you so deeply?
Considering the actual script of the movie, it was an impossible task
to actually release the movie. No one was willing to publish the movie.
The movie’s writer Gregory Allen Howard was refused from every movie
house because of the race issue highlighted in the movie. Through lots of
struggles, the movie was adapted by Disney, even though it was toned
down to make it more “Family-Friendly”.
I have seen a lot of movies till now, can’t even begin to count
them but there are some movies that take your emotions on a roller
coaster. They are more than movies actually, you become a part of them
as they become a part of you. Remember The Titans is that kind of movie
and I believe that every viewer can learn some life-changing things from
it.

Getting and staying focused can be a challenge even in the best of
times. But with everything going on in the world, concentrating can
often feel downright impossible. Below are some tips to help you find
your flow.
Distract (使分心) your brain. Schedule into every workday some
breaks from all that focusing and allow your mind to travel into what’s
called the “default (默認的) mode network” for a bit of freestyle
activities. 36 It’s the place where our minds find innovation and
creativity and often make better decisions than the focused mind.
37 This involves first turning your attention inward. Try
traveling with your mind to someplace enjoyable — maybe it’s a walk
through an imaginary forest or sunbathing on a warm sandy beach. Doing
this several times a day can offer your mind a fresh approach to the job at
hand.
Block interruptions before diving into deep work. 38 To help,
turn off text messaging, notifications and social media alerts. Be vital
when you want a deep dive into focus. Your important work benefits when
you shut off or put away your phone and other screens.
Know your body clock. Whether you are sharp in the morning or a
night owl, don’t spend your day — in particular your peak brain
hours — doing busywork. 39
Try new hobbies. Engaging in hobbies not only is fun but can help us
come up with new solutions to problems we’re facing at work or
home. 40
A. Try to daydream what happened.
B. We try to obtain focus but in vain.
C. Engage in positive constructive daydreaming.
D. Instead, reserve your best brain time for the big stuff.
E. This network of the brain circuit is where magic happens.
F. Our days are filled with distractions, from others and ourselves.
G. Allowing your mind time to play is another way to invite innovation.

I was born and raised in the Netherlands, and I had always lived
there until I was 30 years old. In the Dutch 41 , I was sociable and
intelligent. And it never occurred to me that this could be different in
another culture. 42 , the first time I moved to the US, I felt
emotionally out of 43 on many occasions. I want to 44 this with
three true stories.
At the start of my stay at the University of Michigan, one professor
asked me to join a seminar on emotions. I introduced myself in an 45
way as “interested in culture and emotion”. The professor then added
my self-introduction to 46 American standards, saying that I was
one of the world’s experts on the topic. In response, I looked down
in 47 , thinking “expert” was a big word.
We lived in North Carolina and had friends coming over to dinner.
Conversations were lively and there was a lot of sharing. When my guests
left, they thanked me for dinner. My heart 48 , because “thanking
for dinner” in the Netherlands means that the relationship is distant.
I wrote on my student’s paper that part of her paper was
“boring”, then I told my undergraduate students at my US university
that they should reflect better and 49 more readings. In their
teaching 50 , students wrote that I was “rude”.
No one would suggest the Netherlands and the US are dramatically
different cultures. The professor meant to make me feel good, but
instead made me 51 . My friends meant to show 52 , but I
thought they were distancing themselves from us. I meant to give my
students the comments to which they were 53 , but they felt it was
rude. Where did it go wrong?
We think emotions are feelings deep inside us, but 54 , we
always have our emotions in interactions with others. Our emotions are
not 55 mental feelings, but deeply rooted in the culture where we
are raised.

第二節(滿分25分)
  閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構
成一篇完整的短文。
December strode (闊步走) into the mountains of Colorado,
shooting snowflakes and blowing them into a thick blanket of white. As
Christmas approached, the farmers there closed down most wooden
houses for a holiday cheer. Not all were closed, however. There was
still work to be done, and someone had to stay. That someone was Slim
Carter.
Old Jake, another farmer there, had offered to keep him
company, but Slim shook his head. “After all, a young man like me
has got plenty of Christmases ahead,” Slim joked. Before Jake offered
to stay again, Slim hurried on. “I’ll just have a private Christmas this year, and that’s the way I want it.” So he was left alone at the house. Alone, with his horse in the farm and the wolves roaring in the forest nearby.
Truth was, Slim had decided not to celebrate Christmas at all. It
wasn’t that he didn’t like Christmas. In fact, his Christmas memories
were good ones. His mother would fill their house with the light of candles
and the smell of candy. His father would make their Christmas tree hunt
an all-day, men-only affair. Slim smiled as he remembered sitting on the
broad back of their horse with the freshly cut tree along behind. Back
home, they would cover the tree with paper snowflakes and home-made
decorations and sing all the Christmas songs they knew. And that’s the
way he liked it. Those were the memories he pulled out on nights when he was working alone. Such memories warmed him inside, even if his outsides were aching with cold.
This was Slim’s first year away from home. “Christmas is nothing
if not spent with family,” Slim declared to the empty house. That was
the real reason he’d sent Jake away. He figured he would handle
Christmas better if he just pretended it was an ordinary winter workday.
But on Christmas Eve, as Slim headed back with snow beneath his
feet and stars overhead, his head hung low. It was Christmas, even
without the tree and the gifts. Christmas, and he was all alone.
注意:1.續寫詞數應為150左右;
2. 請按如下格式作答。
Then he remembered decorating the tree with his family again.

While singing to his decorated Christmas tree, Slim heard a
knock on the door.

參考范文:
Then he remembered decorating the tree with his family again. Slim
changed his mind, and decided to have a simple Christmas. He went
out, looking for a Christmas tree. He swung an axe at the tree. The tree
fell! After doing this, he shouldered the tree and walked towards the
farm. On the way back, he heard many Christmas songs, which made
him happy. After he returned to the farm, he put stars on the top of the
tree, hung colored balls on the tree, and decorated the Christmas tree.
While singing to his decorated Christmas tree, Slim heard a knock
on the door. He opened the door and was surprised to see old Jake. Old
Jake was covered with snow. Jake went into the house and said to Slim,
“I felt lonely this day, so I decided to come back and spend this
Christmas with you. May I?” Slim listened and shed tears of gratitude.
So the two lonely people spent a happy and unforgettable Christmas
together.
