Writing a report on population change
Populations change in all areas over time. Do some research and write a report on population change in a city or province based on your findings.
1 Wang Yao is writing a report about the world population, look at the line graph she
found and help her complete the report. Use the words and phrases below to help you.
Growing numbers: rise (sharply, quickly, slowly), grow, go up, double
Falling numbers: fall (sharply, quickly, slowly), drop, go down
No change: stay the same, remain the same
World population

rise的過去式rose，fall的過去式fell。
Useful expressions:

The temperature rose to 18℃.
= The air conditioner raised the temperature to 18℃.
2) rise, raise都有“增加；提高”的意思。
但rise是不及物動(dòng)詞，raise是及物動(dòng)詞。

Step 1 Plan
Choose a city or province you are interested in. Find information about its population change over a period of time and make a line graph.

Write a report about how the population changed over time.
Remember to use the words and phrases in Exercise 1.
Guangzhou’s population
The graph shows how Guangzhou’s population changed in different years. Before 1990, the population grew a little every year. In 1953, there were not many people in Guangzhou. By 1964, more people lived here. From 1990 to 2000, big changes happened. The number of permanent residents went up a lot. In 2000, the annual average growth rate became 4.67%. This fast growth may be because Guangzhou’s economy was good and cities grew a lot. So, many people came here.
Between 2000 and 2010, the growth rate went down to 2.48%. By 2020, the population went up again. The growth rate went back to 3.93%.
All in all, for many years, Guangzhou’s population grew slowly but steady.

Practice
Last Friday we had a heated discussion about what AI robots can do in our English class, Here are the results.
We find that more than half of the students think robots can help with housework. 37% of the students think that they can help us study and improve our grades. 23% of the students believe that robots can take care of the elderly. We are surprised to find that 12% of the students think robots can chat and play with us. Only ten percent of the students think robots can cook for us.
Although robots can do so many things for us, I don’t think robots can take the place of humans because they can never think like humans. Only humans can be creative.

The graph shows the changes of the number of tourists between May and October in our city last year.
From the graph, we can find that there were 330,000 tourists in May. In June, the number fell to 250,000. However, it rose in July and August. It went up to 420,000 in August. Then the number dropped again to 300,000 in September. In October, it rose a little to 360,000.
It’s clear that July and August were the two busiest months. That’s because the summer holidays are in the two months. The number of tourists increased a bit in May and October because of the May Day holiday and the National Day holiday.
