By drawing patterns on the surface of a cup of tea, chabaixi (茶百戲), an ancient Chinese tea trick displayed in a recent TV drama, has gone viral for its apparent similarity with modern coffee art. However, ten years ago, this distinctive technique was close to disappearing.Zhang Zhifeng, a practician of chabaixi, found scenes of chabaixi in the drama aroused great interest among ordinary people.
Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains or even calligraphy. There are over a dozen steps, from grinding (碾碎) tea for fine powder, to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture for thick froth, and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped tea, it turns into a white colour and disappears in 20 minutes. The process before the drawing is known as the tea-making technique, diancha. The quality of diancha is crucial to whether patterns can be successfully produced later.
“Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in China. The importance of chabaixi is not only that this technique is unique in the world, but it also gives us a window into people’s lifestyle in the Song Dynasty, a period of time when leisure activities in some ways resemble what we have now,” Zhang said.
Before chabaixi was discovered by TV audiences, the technique was listed as part of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017, after it was recovered by Zhang Zhifeng. He started researching the origins of chabaixi in the 1980s and brought the technique back in 2009 after decades of trials and practice.Zhang spent nearly 30 years studying and researching the origins and making of tea, but for him it was all worthwhile.
“This technique is key to the tea culture of the Song Dynasty, and it would be a shame to let it fade. This technique must be passed on to the next generations so they can understand its history,”Zhang said.

Even after an official order that prevents single-use plastic from being used in 25 states in India, 3,469,780 tonnes of plastic is produced every year according to a Central Pollution Control Board report. This number is expected to double in the next five years.
With a crying need to address the situation, 22-year-old Sara Lakhani is on a mission to repurpose plastic into beautiful embroidery (刺繡).She uses waste plastic bags to make threads (線),which are in turn used to make Kantha embroidery.

Jack sat by the radio at exactly five minutes before seven o’clock. This was a part of his daily routine (慣例) he never broke. The older man turned the radio on, and tuned (調頻道) it to a specific frequency (特定頻率).
“My sons think you’re someone I made up in my mind, Gerry,” Jack said to himself.“But I know I’ll hear your voice again one day.”
Phillip heard his dad, David, on the phone to Uncle Tim, saying some bad words about Grandpa Jack earlier that day.He loved Grandpa Jack and didn’t understand why Dad thought he was crazy.
The next day, Phillip visited Grandpa Jack after school. He had to find out what was happening with Grandpa. When Grandpa let him in, Phillip immediately went to the old radio.
“Grandpa, why do you keep this?”Phillip pointed to the radio.
“That’s how my best friend, Gerry, and I always kept in touch,”Grandpa replied.“We started using a small radio tuned to a specific frequency to speak to each other when I was about your age, Phillip.During the war, our secret frequency even helped me save Gerry’s life.”
Phillip moved closer to ask the most important question, “Where is Gerry now?”
Grandpa sighed.“I wish I knew, Phillip. When we came home from the war, Gerry traveled to England. He promised he’d return, and asked me to wait by the radio at seven every evening,”Grandpa studied the radio.“It’s been forty-five years, and I still haven’t heard from him, but I haven’t given up hope.I know my friend will contact me one day.”
“I’m going to help you find Gerry,”Phillip looked up at Jack.“I’ll search on the Internet and social media.Somewhere, there’s got to be a clue about where he is.”
“I appreciate that, Phillip, but you don’t need to worry,” Jack smiled.“One day, Gerry will talk on the radio, and I’ll hear it.Until that day comes, I’m just going to wait.”
A few weeks later, Jack sat down five minutes before seven and turned on the radio.
  “Jack, do you read me?”
Jack pressed the button to speak into the radio, “Phillip, are you joking with me?”
“No jokes, Jack!Get outside in two minutes.I’ll be waiting.”

By drawing patterns on the surface of a cup of tea, chabaixi (茶百
戲), an ancient Chinese tea trick displayed in a recent TV drama, has
gone viral for its apparent similarity with modern coffee art. However,
ten years ago, this distinctive technique was close to disappearing.Zhang
Zhifeng, a practician of chabaixi, found scenes of chabaixi in the drama
aroused great interest among ordinary people.
Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains
or even calligraphy. There are over a dozen steps, from grinding (碾
碎) tea for fine powder, to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture
for thick froth, and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from
making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the
cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped
tea, it turns into a white colour and disappears in 20 minutes. The process
before the drawing is known as the tea-making technique, diancha. The
quality of diancha is crucial to whether patterns can be successfully
produced later.
“Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in
China. The importance of chabaixi is not only that this technique is unique
in the world, but it also gives us a window into people’s lifestyle in the
Song Dynasty, a period of time when leisure activities in some ways
resemble what we have now,” Zhang said.
Before chabaixi was discovered by TV audiences, the technique was
listed as part of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017, after it
was recovered by Zhang Zhifeng. He started researching the origins of
chabaixi in the 1980s and brought the technique back in 2009 after decades
of trials and practice.Zhang spent nearly 30 years studying and researching
the origins and making of tea, but for him it was all worthwhile.
“This technique is key to the tea culture of the Song Dynasty, and
it would be a shame to let it fade. This technique must be passed on to the
next generations so they can understand its history,”Zhang said.

Even after an official order that prevents single-use plastic from being
used in 25 states in India, 3,469,780 tonnes of plastic is produced
every year according to a Central Pollution Control Board report. This
number is expected to double in the next five years.
With a crying need to address the situation, 22-year-old Sara
Lakhani is on a mission to repurpose plastic into beautiful embroidery
(刺繡).She uses waste plastic bags to make threads (線),which are
in turn used to make Kantha embroidery.
Her latest collection “Trash or Treasure” was shown at Lakme
Fashion Week in 2022.She used more than 200 plastic bags to bring the
collection to life.
Brought up in a small town in Maharashtra, Sara was always driven
towards trees and natural beauty. But she was also aware of a serious
problem — watching her father, who worked in the field of making
medicines, burn plastic waste helped her realize the damaging impact this
action had on the environment.
So when it came to designing her collection of clothes, she had a
clear idea of what she wanted to do.“When I started the project, I knew
very well that whatever designs I make have to use sustainable (可持續
的) materials,” says Sara.
She started trying out different methods of embroidery and found
Kantha to be the most viable one as it could use the most plastic.“I spent
hours in the workshop with embroiderers as one piece would need at least
15 days of manpower and extremely fine handwork,” she says.

sustainable, and how our activities cause damage to the environment.I
wish to explore more and make clothing in India sustainable and

Jack sat by the radio at exactly five minutes before seven
o’clock. This was a part of his daily routine (慣例) he never
broke. The older man turned the radio on, and tuned (調頻道) it to a
specific frequency (特定頻率).
“My sons think you’re someone I made up in my mind,
Gerry,” Jack said to himself.“But I know I’ll hear your voice again
one day.”
Phillip heard his dad, David, on the phone to Uncle Tim, saying
some bad words about Grandpa Jack earlier that day.He loved Grandpa
Jack and didn’t understand why Dad thought he was crazy.
The next day, Phillip visited Grandpa Jack after school. He had to
find out what was happening with Grandpa. When Grandpa let him in,
Phillip immediately went to the old radio.
“Grandpa, why do you keep this?”Phillip pointed to the radio.
“That’s how my best friend, Gerry, and I always kept in
touch,”Grandpa replied.“We started using a small radio tuned to a
specific frequency to speak to each other when I was about your age,
Phillip.During the war, our secret frequency even helped me save
Gerry’s life.”
Phillip moved closer to ask the most important question, “Where
is Gerry now?”
Grandpa sighed.“I wish I knew, Phillip. When we came home
from the war, Gerry traveled to England. He promised he’d return,
and asked me to wait by the radio at seven every evening,”Grandpa
studied the radio.“It’s been forty-five years, and I still haven’t heard
from him, but I haven’t given up hope.I know my friend will contact
me one day.”
“I’m going to help you find Gerry,”Phillip looked up at
Jack.“I’ll search on the Internet and social media.Somewhere,
there’s got to be a clue about where he is.”
“I appreciate that, Phillip, but you don’t need to worry,”
Jack smiled.“One day, Gerry will talk on the radio, and I’ll hear
it.Until that day comes, I’m just going to wait.”
A few weeks later, Jack sat down five minutes before seven and
turned on the radio.
  “Jack, do you read me?”
Jack pressed the button to speak into the radio, “Phillip, are you
joking with me?”
“No jokes, Jack!Get outside in two minutes.I’ll be waiting.”

With a heart full of hope, Jack rushed outside. The man standing in
front of him was old, but Jack recognized his warm smile and sharp
eyes.Jack hurried to meet Gerry and asked where on earth he had been,
telling him he had waited all those years to hear his voice again.Gerry
hugged Jack and explained that he was in an accident shortly after he
arrived in London and lost some of his memories. He wanted to get in
touch so many times, but he couldn’t remember their secret frequency.
When Jack asked how Gerry could speak to him this time, Gerry
said it was Phillip who told him the frequency.Gerry said since he
retired, he had spent an hour each day trying different frequencies in the
hope that he would find Jack on one of them, but instead, he got
Phillip.Phillip stepped out from behind a tree.Jack went up to hug his
grandson and thanked him. Then, the two friends went inside. They spent
the whole evening discussing their experiences over the many years they
were separated. They met every day after that.Their friendship was as
strong as the day Gerry left.
