“In the Freedom Optimist’s Shooting Stars soccer program, children with physical, intellectual, or emotional disabilities are paired with players from local youth soccer teams who volunteer to give attendees a memorable and fun youth athletics experience,” Shooting Stars Coordinator Scott Walthour said.
“It’s a great opportunity for the kids to get outside and play with children they wouldn’t normally get to communicate with,” Walthour said.“The Stars players can get exposed to a sport that they normally wouldn’t be exposed to, with lots of support, and the youth mentors (導師) can learn how to communicate with children that are different from themselves.”
Both the spring and fall seasons of the program are made up of four one-hour sessions (時間段) on Friday evenings over four weeks.Sessions begin with low-key and silly warm-ups, followed by time for players to visit soccer skill stations that change from week to week. The Stars players are welcome to do whatever seems like the most fun but they do not play games.
The spring season ended this Friday with an award ceremony.Sixty-four players signed up to play this spring and about 40 attended each meeting. The program is aimed at kids aged 5 to 18 with special physical, mental, or emotional needs, but those outside of that range are welcome.Walthour said the program has never turned anyone away.
More than 100 volunteers typically show up for Stars practices.Volunteers show up about 15 minutes early to receive instruction about best practices when mentoring a Stars player and are paired with the same players from week to week, when possible.
Attendance is on the rise, and the program is seeking sponsors (贊助者) to help pay the cost of giving players free awards and soccer equipment.“Shooting Stars operates at a low cost because making money is not the point of the program. We do this program for the kids,” Walthour said.

For young athletes, it’s important to listen to those who blazed a trail before them. It’s an opportunity to know what to do at the right moments, and what not to do when put in certain situations. It’s what former basketball player Alexander K Newell wishes he had while growing up.
He’s now imparting what he learned in his journey as an athlete to the next generation.“I wanted to write a book to tell the youngsters about my life,”said Newell.“And how I was going down the right path.”
His book, If These Bricks Could Talk, is an autobiography of his life as a Detroit high school basketball star from the Brewster Projects and how his decisions led him away from possible fame (名聲) and fortune.
As a high schooler, Newell averaged nearly 25 points a game at Murray-Wright High School, a school that produced some famous athletic alumni (校友), such as Detroit Tigers legend (傳奇人物) Hal Newhouser.
Newell ever played for Alabama State.Later he dropped out after experiencing limited success with the Hornets.Still determined to make his professional basketball dreams come true, Newell tried everything he could, even taking a chance against a Detroit Pistons legend.
“I got a team, so I could play against Isiah Thomas because I wanted to measure my game,”Newell said.“Isiah Thomas, I knew he played for the Pistons, but I want to see where I’m at.”
Over the past seven years, he’s held a basketball camp for poor kids, giving them the guidance and support they need to succeed.Newell hopes that his teachings will inspire the kids at his camp to achieve things he never could.
When asked how he would feel if one of those kids made it to the NBA, and mentioned his camp as a reason he made it there, Newell said he’d feel as happy as he was when he made it to the NBA.
5.What was Newell’s dream while he was growing up?( )

My kitchen may be the best kitchen on the planet. That is because when I look out of its window, I can see the west side of Grandeur Peak.Grandeur Peak is one of the most attractive mountains in the central Wasatch, with its animals, trees, morning clouds, evening sunset, and the mountain’s paragliders (滑翔傘運動員).
The number of paragliders flying above Grandeur Peak has grown over the past 15 years, so much so that they have become part of the mountain. But during the past year they have largely disappeared. Some paragliders told me that the wind became too strong to fly in.
The wind is too strong! Is this another character of our changing climate? Will paragliding be a sport influenced by a warming planet?
Utah has been much windier in the past few years. For me, a scientist who studies living things, with only a limited understanding of atmospheric (大氣的) science, it is easy to believe that our future will be windier:higher temperatures mean more energy in the atmosphere, and more atmospheric energy means stronger wind, at least in my mind.Adding to this, the year is getting super hot, and the planet is warming faster than scientists predicted.I can’t help but worry that the future of paragliding in Utah is not bright.
I’m writing to the brave people who fly from Grandeur Peak with beautiful wings.I want you to join Clean the Darn Air, a group that’s working hard to fight climate change and air pollution — I’m part of it too.We are introducing a measure, which aims to remove the state sales tax (稅) on grocery store food and put a carbon tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in its place:gas, electricity produced from fossil fuels, and natural gas.The goal isn’t to make taxes higher. The idea is to encourage everyone to reduce their use of fossil fuels.
So, paragliders, join us.Now is the time to take care of our planet. If we succeed, then Utah can be an example to others in fighting climate change.
9.Why does the author mention his kitchen?( )
A.To share his love of cooking dishes.
B.To bring back his memories of paragliding.
C.To introduce Grandeur Peak’s paragliding.
D.To describe his adventures around Grandeur Peak.
10.What happened in the past year?( )
A.The author saw less paragliding.
B.Few people visited Grandeur Peak.
C.Air pollution became serious in Utah.
D.Strong winds stopped people going outside.
11.What opinion does the author express in Paragraph 4?( )
A.Utah will focus on energy production.
B.It will be windier and warmer in Utah.

D.The study of atmospheric science will face challenges.
12.What did the author call on paragliders to do?( )
A.Buy those foods that are taxed less.
B.Reduce their use of gas in daily life.
C.Join him to support a program about taxing.
D.Join a group to improve their paragliding skills.

“In the Freedom Optimist’s Shooting Stars soccer program,
children with physical, intellectual, or emotional disabilities are paired
with players from local youth soccer teams who volunteer to give attendees
a memorable and fun youth athletics experience,” Shooting Stars
Coordinator Scott Walthour said.
“It’s a great opportunity for the kids to get outside and play with
children they wouldn’t normally get to communicate with,” Walthour
said.“The Stars players can get exposed to a sport that they normally
wouldn’t be exposed to, with lots of support, and the youth mentors
(導師) can learn how to communicate with children that are different
from themselves.”
Both the spring and fall seasons of the program are made up of four
one-hour sessions (時間段) on Friday evenings over four
weeks.Sessions begin with low-key and silly warm-ups, followed by
time for players to visit soccer skill stations that change from week to
week. The Stars players are welcome to do whatever seems like the most
fun but they do not play games.
The spring season ended this Friday with an award ceremony.Sixty-
four players signed up to play this spring and about 40 attended each
meeting. The program is aimed at kids aged 5 to 18 with special physical,
mental, or emotional needs, but those outside of that range are
welcome.Walthour said the program has never turned anyone away.
More than 100 volunteers typically show up for Stars
practices.Volunteers show up about 15 minutes early to receive instruction
about best practices when mentoring a Stars player and are paired with the
same players from week to week, when possible.
Attendance is on the rise, and the program is seeking sponsors (贊
助者) to help pay the cost of giving players free awards and soccer
equipment.“Shooting Stars operates at a low cost because making money
is not the point of the program. We do this program for the kids,”
Walthour said.

For young athletes, it’s important to listen to those who blazed a
trail before them. It’s an opportunity to know what to do at the right
moments, and what not to do when put in certain situations. It’s what
former basketball player Alexander K Newell wishes he had while growing
up.
He’s now imparting what he learned in his journey as an athlete to
the next generation.“I wanted to write a book to tell the youngsters about
my life,”said Newell.“And how I was going down the right path.”
His book, If These Bricks Could Talk, is an autobiography of his
life as a Detroit high school basketball star from the Brewster Projects and
how his decisions led him away from possible fame (名聲) and
fortune.
As a high schooler, Newell averaged nearly 25 points a game at
Murray-Wright High School, a school that produced some famous
athletic alumni (校友), such as Detroit Tigers legend (傳奇人物)
Hal Newhouser.
Newell ever played for Alabama State.Later he dropped out after
experiencing limited success with the Hornets.Still determined to make his
professional basketball dreams come true, Newell tried everything he
could, even taking a chance against a Detroit Pistons legend.
“I got a team, so I could play against Isiah Thomas because I
wanted to measure my game,”Newell said.“Isiah Thomas, I knew
he played for the Pistons, but I want to see where I’m at.”
Over the past seven years, he’s held a basketball camp for poor
kids, giving them the guidance and support they need to succeed.Newell
hopes that his teachings will inspire the kids at his camp to achieve things
he never could.
When asked how he would feel if one of those kids made it to the
NBA, and mentioned his camp as a reason he made it there, Newell
said he’d feel as happy as he was when he made it to the NBA.

My kitchen may be the best kitchen on the planet. That is because
when I look out of its window, I can see the west side of Grandeur
Peak.Grandeur Peak is one of the most attractive mountains in the central
Wasatch, with its animals, trees, morning clouds, evening sunset,
and the mountain’s paragliders (滑翔傘運動員).
The number of paragliders flying above Grandeur Peak has grown
over the past 15 years, so much so that they have become part of the
mountain. But during the past year they have largely disappeared. Some
paragliders told me that the wind became too strong to fly in.
The wind is too strong! Is this another character of our changing
climate? Will paragliding be a sport influenced by a warming planet?
Utah has been much windier in the past few years. For me, a
scientist who studies living things, with only a limited understanding of
atmospheric (大氣的) science, it is easy to believe that our future will
be windier:higher temperatures mean more energy in the atmosphere,
and more atmospheric energy means stronger wind, at least in my
mind.Adding to this, the year is getting super hot, and the planet is
warming faster than scientists predicted.I can’t help but worry that the
future of paragliding in Utah is not bright.
I’m writing to the brave people who fly from Grandeur Peak with
beautiful wings.I want you to join Clean the Darn Air, a group that’s
working hard to fight climate change and air pollution — I’m part of it
too.We are introducing a measure, which aims to remove the state sales
tax (稅) on grocery store food and put a carbon tax on fossil fuels (化
石燃料) in its place:gas, electricity produced from fossil fuels, and
natural gas.The goal isn’t to make taxes higher. The idea is to encourage
everyone to reduce their use of fossil fuels.
So, paragliders, join us.Now is the time to take care of our
planet. If we succeed, then Utah can be an example to others in fighting
climate change.

A. Utah will focus on energy production.
B. It will be windier and warmer in Utah.

your mind.可知,運動是一種發展心智力量的完美方式。此處承

易怒的原因)符合語境。
