Do you want to surprise your friends Brian, Danny and I did an experiment in science class this week. I suggest you try it, too! First, get a jar full of water and a piece of cardboard. Cover the jar with the cardboard and turn the jar over. Next, take your hand off. Can you guess what happens The cardboard holds the water in the jar!

be like意為“像”,多指品質、性格等內在方面的相似。
(1)look like偏于外貌上的形似。
(2)take after意為“(外貌或行為)像(父母)”。
2.Everyone here is fine.
everyone為不定代詞,意為“每個人,人人”。不定代詞作主語時,謂語動詞應用單數形式;不定代詞被形容詞修飾時,形容詞應后置;含有不定代詞的句子在進行肯定和否定轉化時,可將不定代詞進行變化;“不定代詞+else”意為“別的……”;不定代詞的所有格直接在詞尾加“’s”,“不定代詞+else”的所有格需在else后加“’s”。

suggest為動詞,意為“提議,提出”,后可接名詞/v.-ing,或接that引導的賓語從句,that從句用“should+動詞原形”,should可以省略。
suggestion作可數名詞,意為“建議,意見”。

本句中的短語full of water用在名詞jar之后作定語,不定式、介詞短語和定語從句等都可用在名詞后作定語。
5.Cover the jar with the cardboard and turn the jar over.
turn…over意為“將……翻過來。”
turn over還意為“移交,仔細考慮”。
6.The air pressure pushing up on the cardboard is higher than that of the water pushing down from inside the jar.
◆push up意為“向上推,提高”。
◆push down意為“向下按,推倒,壓倒”。
◆that用來替代“the+前述名詞”,以避免重復。

in place意為“原位,在恰當的位置”。

effect為名詞,意為“結果,影響”。have an effect on意為“對……有影響”。

development為名詞,意為“發展,成長”,the development of意為“……的發展”。
develop為動詞,意為“(使)成長,發展”,a developing country發展中國家,a developed country發達國家。
