The suffixes -ful and -less

We can add the suffix -ful or -less to some nouns to form adjectives. The suffix -ful means “full of”. The suffix -less means “without”.

TIP：Not all words have both -ful and -less as suffixes.

-ful后綴
-ful多加在名詞之后表示“充滿(mǎn)……的、富有……的、具有……的、有……性質(zhì)（或傾向）的”的意思，是最常用的形容詞后綴。如：
hopeful 有希望的（hope希望）　　　 　　
wonderful 好極的，精彩的（wonder驚奇）
careful 小心的、細(xì)心的（care關(guān)心）
helpful 有幫助的（help幫助）
useful 有用的（use使用）
meaningful 有意義的（meaning意思）
-less后綴
-less多加在名詞之后表示否定（不、無(wú)）的意思，表示“沒(méi)有……的”，是最常用的形容詞后綴。如：
colourless 無(wú)色的
hopeless 無(wú)助的
useless 無(wú)用的
meaningless 無(wú)意義的
My best friend Max is a cheerful person. He always looks on the bright side of things. He is also very helpful. Once I had a sleepless night because I was worried about a volleyball game. I felt helpless. The next day, Max came and gave me some useful advice.
