In the third grade, ten-year-old Jane read a book about poaching (偷獵) the endangered tigers and cutting down forests at will. She told her friend Holt about it and she really wanted to help save the tigers.
Despite being in elementary school, the two girls have organized fundraisers (募捐活動).During their first year, the girls raised $1,500 to save tigers.“We went to a zoo and asked if we could help and it became this huge fun thing. We never expected it to get so big,” the girls said.
When Jane and Holt pitched their ideas in the zoo to ask for funds, their table was packed with zoo guests all afternoon. This year’s goal is $2,500.Whatever they raise will be matched by the Zoological Society and all will be donated (捐贈) to the Tiger Protection Fund.
On top of helping the animal, the girls would also be excited about their names to be proudly posted at the zoo’s entrance on a sign with other donors.“If we get our names on it, it’s going to feel like being famous, and it’s going to be like a dream come true for us,” Jane said. They said they were close to their goal and the zoo couldn’t be happier.
“Their awareness of what’s happening to tigers and their wanting to educate people on what’s happening to tigers are unbelievable,” Kassner, an animal expert, said.“Three kinds of tigers have already died out and the remaining six are all endangered. The ‘Tiger Girls’ are bringing a big and positive effect and won’t be stopping anytime soon.”

Wood stork, which was on the brink of extinction in 1984, has recovered enough in Florida and other southern states. The American wildlife officials proposed removing the waterfowl (水禽) from the endangered species list.
This symbolic species, which is the only stork native to North America, has rebounded (反彈) because dedicated partners in the southeast have worked tirelessly to restore ecosystems that support it.In addition, the wood stork has increased its range in coastal areas. The birds have adapted to new nesting areas, tripling the number of colonies across their range from 29 to 99 in recent years.
Credit goes mainly to the wildlife protection provided by the Endangered Species Act(ESA), which can impose restrictions on a variety of activities in areas where such species are located, such as development, mining and oil drilling. The act saved the wood stork and it helped preserve and rebuild vital habitats throughout the southeast, which has improved water quality and benefited countless other species who call the area home. The Endangered Species Act has saved 99% of the species that have been on the list since 1973, with 100 types of plants and animals delisted because they have recovered or are at least stable.
The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service said that restoration of the wood stork’s habitat, especially in the Florida Everglades and adjacent Big Cypress National Preserve, led to a sharp increase in breeding pairs. Those numbers had shrunk to just 5,000 pairs in 1984, whereas there are more than 10,000 pairs today.
“The proposed delisting of the wood stork is a significant milestone and a remarkable achievement of the hard work by federal agencies, state and local governments, tribes, conservation organizations, and private citizens in protecting and restoring our most at-risk species,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said.
If the wood stork is delisted, officials said it would remain protected by other laws including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Clean Water Act.A monitoring plan, would be put in place for at least five years to ensure the stork population remains stable.

B.Saving of the Endangered Wood Stork Progresses
C.Efforts to Restore the Wildlife Habitat Pay Off

For many of us, our closest meeting with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of amazing creatures. It’s an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for the animals? A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum.Later, live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in zoos — animal protection was not a priority. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for animals, making bigger enclosures (圍場), removing bars, and, to some extent, copying their natural habitats.
Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals and using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are here to help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public.Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection programmes.
Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect species that are under threat in the wild due to climate change.Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Protection at the University of Salford says, “We wouldn’t have a lot of different species today if it wasn’t for zoos.” Some zoos have breeding (繁殖) programmes which help to preserve the future of species.Actor Leonardo DiCaprio praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its protection work.It brought a rare fish species back from the dead after breeding and releasing a school of golden fish back into their native river.
While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC:“Taking a walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon.”
9.What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A.The conditions for animals are improving.
B.People used to kill animals for entertainment.

D.Animal protection has always been the biggest concern.
10.Why is The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To prove it is cruel to keep animals in zoos.
B.To show zoos are making efforts to protect wildlife.
C.To question whether it is useful to educate the public.
D.To express not all the zoos are well managed.
11.Why are some species in danger according to Paragraph 3?
A.Because of little resources.
B.Because of heavy pollution.

12.What is Jon Coe’s attitude towards meeting wildlife in the future?
A.Doubtful. B.Worried.

The Monarch’s Journey
Many animals move from one place to another① at certain times of the year. This annual② movement is called migration③.They migrate to find food, seek④ a partner, or in search of⑤ warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly.
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects⑥ with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey.Somehow⑦ they manage⑧ to travel around 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico.However,[1]until recently no one knew how they did this.
  [1]句中how引導賓語從句。
[2]A team of scientists led⑨ by Professor⑩ Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day.It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun. [3]These two pieces of information — the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky — allow the butterfly to determine the way to go.[4]Eventually , it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.
  [2]句中led ...Washington為過去分詞短語作后置定語。

The research on the monarch’s behaviour has however led to a greater awareness of this creature .People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to feed on .If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again.[7]The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive and keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come.

In the third grade, ten-year-old Jane read a book about poaching
(偷獵) the endangered tigers and cutting down forests at will. She told
her friend Holt about it and she really wanted to help save the tigers.
Despite being in elementary school, the two girls have organized
fundraisers (募捐活動).During their first year, the girls raised $1,
500 to save tigers.“We went to a zoo and asked if we could help and it
became this huge fun thing. We never expected it to get so big,” the
girls said.
When Jane and Holt pitched their ideas in the zoo to ask for funds,
their table was packed with zoo guests all afternoon. This year’s goal is
$2,500.Whatever they raise will be matched by the Zoological Society
and all will be donated (捐贈) to the Tiger Protection Fund.
On top of helping the animal, the girls would also be excited about
their names to be proudly posted at the zoo’s entrance on a sign with
other donors.“If we get our names on it, it’s going to feel like being
famous, and it’s going to be like a dream come true for us,” Jane
said. They said they were close to their goal and the zoo couldn’t be happier.
“Their awareness of what’s happening to tigers and their wanting
to educate people on what’s happening to tigers are unbelievable,”
Kassner, an animal expert, said.“Three kinds of tigers have already
died out and the remaining six are all endangered. The ‘Tiger Girls’ are
bringing a big and positive effect and won’t be stopping anytime soon.”
“I’m so happy that we’ve come this far.We can do this now
though we’re only fifth graders and just imagine what we can do in the
future,” Holt said.

Wood stork, which was on the brink of extinction in 1984, has
recovered enough in Florida and other southern states. The American
wildlife officials proposed removing the waterfowl (水禽) from the
endangered species list.
This symbolic species, which is the only stork native to North
America, has rebounded (反彈) because dedicated partners in the
southeast have worked tirelessly to restore ecosystems that support it.In
addition, the wood stork has increased its range in coastal areas. The
birds have adapted to new nesting areas, tripling the number of colonies
across their range from 29 to 99 in recent years.
Credit goes mainly to the wildlife protection provided by the
Endangered Species Act(ESA), which can impose restrictions on a
variety of activities in areas where such species are located, such as
development, mining and oil drilling. The act saved the wood stork and it
helped preserve and rebuild vital habitats throughout the southeast, which
has improved water quality and benefited countless other species who call
the area home. The Endangered Species Act has saved 99% of the species
that have been on the list since 1973, with 100 types of plants and
animals delisted because they have recovered or are at least stable.
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that restoration of the wood
stork’s habitat, especially in the Florida Everglades and adjacent Big
Cypress National Preserve, led to a sharp increase in breeding
pairs. Those numbers had shrunk to just 5,000 pairs in 1984, whereas
there are more than 10,000 pairs today.
“The proposed delisting of the wood stork is a significant milestone
and a remarkable achievement of the hard work by federal agencies, state
and local governments, tribes, conservation organizations, and private
citizens in protecting and restoring our most at-risk species,” Interior
Secretary Deb Haaland said.
If the wood stork is delisted, officials said it would remain protected
by other laws including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Clean Water
Act.A monitoring plan, would be put in place for at least five years to
ensure the stork population remains stable.

C
For many of us, our closest meeting with wild animals is at a
zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of
amazing creatures. It’s an enjoyable and educational experience for us,
but is it the best environment for the animals? A long time ago, people
could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum.Later,
live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to
the public in zoos — animal protection was not a priority. But modern zoos
and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for
animals, making bigger enclosures (圍場), removing bars, and,
to some extent, copying their natural habitats.
Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals and
using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are
here to help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK, the
introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate
the public.Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and
funding protection programmes.
Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect
species that are under threat in the wild due to climate change.Robert
Young, Chair in Wildlife Protection at the University of Salford says,
“We wouldn’t have a lot of different species today if it wasn’t for
zoos.” Some zoos have breeding (繁殖) programmes which help to
preserve the future of species.Actor Leonardo DiCaprio praised Chester
Zoo in the UK for its protection work.It brought a rare fish species back
from the dead after breeding and releasing a school of golden fish back into their native river.
While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to
meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon
Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC:“Taking a walk through a group
of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty
soon.”
