Section Ⅳ Writing a story about a misunderstanding in English
Ⅰ.閱讀理解
Today we are going to talk about the expression: A rolling stone gathers no moss (苔蘚).Most of you probably know that a stone is the same thing as a rock. But what about moss?
Moss is a very soft, green plant. It has very small leaves and does not flower. It loves shade and water, so moss grows well on wet ground, trees and rocks. In fact, rocks and stones that line shady creeks (小溪) and rivers are often mossy.Moss grows slowly and is a rootless plant. It spreads well over non-moving surfaces. In fact, to prevent moss from growing on stones in your garden, you can just move the rocks around, turning them over now and then.
Why? Just as the saying goes, “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” Writer Shelley Gollust explained that the saying can be understood in a couple of ways.It can mean that a person who never settles down in one place will not gather wealth or long-lasting relationships. The moss that slowly spreads across the rock represents the money and friends we make over time.
But there is another way we use this expression.Think about a rolling stone. It leads a carefree life, on the move with no moss to worry about.People who are “rolling stones” live without the restrictions that come with responsibilities. They go anywhere anytime they want. And they don’t stay anywhere long enough to form attachments (愛戀).A free spirit is also a term we use to describe such a person. They are not tied down with lots of traditional responsibilities.
A rolling stone could also be described as “nomadic (游牧的)”.Experts at the Merriam-Webster online dictionary define (下定義) a nomad as “a member of a group of people who move from place to place”.Often nomads move around to find food. However, these days we can use the word “nomadic” to describe anyone who moves around a lot.

Single mother Krystal works hard to provide daily necessities for her kid. They may not have many material things. But love is clearly in no short supply.
Krystal was having a particularly tough time making ends meet. The bike she rode to work broke and couldn’t be used. But she couldn’t afford a new one.So she had to walk to work, spending an extra hour on the way.Once in a while, she would wonder whether there was hope in life. Her son, 13-year-old William Preston, couldn’t help but notice.
Seeing his mother work so hard to earn money, William, the sweet young man, was always helping his mother with housework. He didn’t want to see his mom walking to work every day.So, he decided he was going to do whatever it took to buy his mom another bike.
William saw on YouTube that a boy bought his mom a bike and then surprised her with it.He also wanted to do that.William came across a cheap used bike on sale on Facebook. And he knew what he needed to do to help out his struggling mom.
In fact, the 13-year-old has been doing yard work for people in his community to make some money. So, he continued to work hard and save money, which was impressive enough for someone his age.But William took it one step further.
Back in his own room, William was staring at the big box of toys that his relatives and friends had bought him as gifts. He treasured the toys.He spent most of his spare time playing with them.Among them was the game player Xbox, his most prized possession (財產(chǎn)).When his mother called him to have supper, he had an idea.

we sat around the table, enjoying the delicious food.A few minutes
later, Fred got up from his seat and answered a call.Returning to the
table, he told us that he had bigger fish to fry and asked us to wait for a
moment. We all expected him to bring us some fish when he returned. However, he came back with nothing soon.I asked where the
fish was, which made him very puzzled.Suddenly, he realised that I
misunderstood him, so he explained to us that having bigger fish to fry
means having something more important to do in English. We all laughed
and continued our dinner.

Ⅰ.閱讀理解
Today we are going to talk about the expression: A rolling stone
gathers no moss (苔蘚).Most of you probably know that a stone is the
same thing as a rock. But what about moss?
Moss is a very soft, green plant. It has very small leaves and does
not flower. It loves shade and water, so moss grows well on wet
ground, trees and rocks. In fact, rocks and stones that line shady creeks
(小溪) and rivers are often mossy.Moss grows slowly and is a rootless
plant. It spreads well over non-moving surfaces. In fact, to prevent moss
from growing on stones in your garden, you can just move the rocks
around, turning them over now and then.
Why? Just as the saying goes, “A rolling stone gathers no
moss.” Writer Shelley Gollust explained that the saying can be
understood in a couple of ways.It can mean that a person who never settles down in one place will not gather wealth or long-lasting relationships. The moss that slowly spreads across the rock represents the money and friends we make over time.
But there is another way we use this expression.Think about a rolling
stone. It leads a carefree life, on the move with no moss to worry
about.People who are “rolling stones” live without the restrictions that
come with responsibilities. They go anywhere anytime they want. And
they don’t stay anywhere long enough to form attachments (愛戀).A
free spirit is also a term we use to describe such a person. They are not tied
down with lots of traditional responsibilities.
A rolling stone could also be described as “nomadic (游牧
的)”.Experts at the Merriam-Webster online dictionary define (下定
義) a nomad as “a member of a group of people who move from place
to place”.Often nomads move around to find food. However, these
days we can use the word “nomadic” to describe anyone who moves
around a lot.

Ⅲ.讀后續(xù)寫
  閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構
成一篇完整的短文。
Single mother Krystal works hard to provide daily necessities for her
kid. They may not have many material things. But love is clearly in no
short supply.
Krystal was having a particularly tough time making ends meet. The
bike she rode to work broke and couldn’t be used. But she couldn’t
afford a new one.So she had to walk to work, spending an extra hour on
the way.Once in a while, she would wonder whether there was hope in
life. Her son, 13-year-old William Preston, couldn’t help but notice.
Seeing his mother work so hard to earn money, William, the sweet
young man, was always helping his mother with housework. He didn’t
want to see his mom walking to work every day.So, he decided he was
going to do whatever it took to buy his mom another bike.
William saw on YouTube that a boy bought his mom a bike and then
surprised her with it.He also wanted to do that.William came across a
cheap used bike on sale on Facebook. And he knew what he needed to do
to help out his struggling mom.
In fact, the 13-year-old has been doing yard work for people in his
community to make some money. So, he continued to work hard and
save money, which was impressive enough for someone his age.But
William took it one step further.
Back in his own room, William was staring at the big box of toys
that his relatives and friends had bought him as gifts. He treasured the
toys.He spent most of his spare time playing with them.Among them was
the game player Xbox, his most prized possession (財產(chǎn)).When his
mother called him to have supper, he had an idea.

With the money he had saved, William bought the bike on
Facebook.

參考范文:
After school, he brought his Xbox to a second-hand shop nearby.
When asked why he wanted to sell the game player, William told the
shopkeeper about his idea. The shopkeeper was impressed by the
considerate boy and bought the game player at a relatively higher
price. With this money in his pocket, William figured out that he needed
to do yard work for one more week to get enough money for the bike.Day
after day, the money in his pocket increased. On the seventh day, he
finally managed to save enough money.
With the money he had saved, William bought the bike on
Facebook. When Krystal came back from work with tired body, she was
surprised to see a bike in the house.Learning what William had done for
her, tears welled up in her eyes. She gave William a big hug, saying,
“I love you, my dear son.Thank you so much.” Krystal shared their
story on YouTube, “When I was in a tough time, my son William
came here. His act of kindness has helped restore my hope for the
future.”
