A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
①... They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
②... Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sinkand put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down.the fire so it cooked nicely.
③Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear!The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible during the rest of that school year.
Some jobs were more interesting than others,and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous years. Rita, a kind and quiet girl, had carried out the teacher's instrutions perfertly. All the children thought Rita would be given the best job.
But there was a big supprise. Each child received a normal job like preparing the computer for lessons, cleaning the blackboard, or looking after one of the pets. But Rita's job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita couldn't help feeling disappointed. With tears welling up in her eyes, she stood up and asked why she was given such an insignificant task. The teacher hugged her, kissed her on her forehead and said,“If you can take good care of the ant,you are sure to win a reward. After all,you have to do what are apparently the smallest tasks before being given the most important ones. I believe you can make it.”Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They said it was unfair for her.
However,Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest.“I will turn this little task into something great,”Rita said to herself... So, Rita started investigating
everything about her little ant, modified the little box to make it perfect for the ant and gave the antthe best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had expected.
One day in spiring, the classroom door opened and in came a man,who looked very important. The teachor goterrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez, an entomologist（昆蟲學家）from Florida Natural Reserve. He has something special to announce.”

At the sight of the puzzled students, he explained,"Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant given to you. You've won the competition!"Wonderful news, indeed!
Hearing the good news,the whole class was filled with joy and celebration.Everyone understood why the teacher had insisted that the ant was a special one. They thanked the teacher for thinking of entering them in the competition, and thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And they also learnt that to be given the most important tasks you have to know how to be responsible even in what are apparently the smallest tasks. And without doubt,it was Rita who was most pleased with this, having said to herself many times that she would turn the little job into something really great.
