Welcome to Computer-based English Listening and Speaking Test. CELST is a module of National Matriculation English Test (Guangdong Version), consisting of three parts. Part A is Reading Aloud. In this part, you are required to watch a video clip and read after the speaker in the video. Part B is Role Play. In this part, you are required to act as a role and complete three communicative tasks: listen to a speaker, ask the speaker three questions and then answer five questions from the computer acting as another role. Part C is Retelling. In this part, you are required to listen to a monologue, and then retell what you have heard in your own words.
As Chinese New Year draws near, while some are having fun on ice, for others, ice is an obstruction. While sailing an ice-bound sea, a ship can very easily get stuck. But it can’t suppress people’s desire to go home for reunion. That’s why people have come up with this combination. Whenever they run into obstructing sea ice, the excavator comes into play, breaking up the ice and allowing passengers to return home safely. This is what Chinese people are like. No matter how far away they are or how difficult it is, they get together for reunion on this day.
W: Hi, Tom, I heard that you were on TV last week.
M: Yes, a friend invited me to a TV interview. It was my first time
sitting in front of the cameras.

M: It was okay. I was a bit nervous at the beginning, though.

It all started from a first trip to Hainan. On that trip, I noticed the fishtails were very different in colors and patterns. So I took photos of the tails only. Later, I put some of the fishtail photos online. Surprisingly, they attracted the attention of many people across the country. A teacher even sent me an email. That email meant a lot to me.

A Familiar Stranger
Tom loved reading very much. Recently, he joined a book club. There he met Mary. Tom found they had the same taste for books. One day at a book club event, Tom recommended to Mary a book he had just read. Tom said the author of the book was his favorite writer, but there was little information about the writer except for the pen name. Tom told Mary that he really wanted to meet the writer in person. Mary smiled and said, “I'm sure you will." Several months later, the book club organized a meeting for writers to meet with their readers. Tom was excited to know that his favorite writer would be there too. On the day of the meeting, Tom arrived early. When he entered the room, he saw Mary sitting in the front row. He went over and sat next to her. They chatted for a while, then the meeting started. When his favorite writer's name was announced, Tom was surprised to see Mary stand up. She nodded at Tom with a smile and then walked right to the stage. At that moment, Tom realized that Mary was the very writer he had always wanted to meet.
