音節是以元音（音標）為主體構成的發音單位，任何一個單詞都可以分解為一個個音節朗讀。音節的核心發音是元音音標，每一個音節里都要有一個元音音標，音節的分界線是輔音音標。
一個英語單詞，如果由兩個或兩個以上的音節組成，念得比較響的音節就是重讀音節，其他音節是非重讀音節。
在音標中，符號 ' 后面的那個音節就是重讀音節，其余的音節就是非重讀音節。
如 visit[ v z t]如這個單詞有兩個音節，第一個音節是vi,
它的元音音標是vi[ v ]的i[ ],第二個音節是sit,它的元音音標
是sit[z t]的i[ ], 這兩個音節的分界線就是輔音音標s[z].
單詞的重讀音節與非重讀音節
如 visit[ v z t]的重讀音節是vi[ v ]

重音的位置
1.雙音節詞的重音
一般的雙音節詞，重音在第一個音節上，如worker/ w k /工人。有的雙音節詞，重音在第二個音節上，如tonight/t na t/在今晚。
2.多音節詞的重音
多音節詞的重音，一般在第一個音節上，如：family/ f m li/。也有的在第二個音節上，如：tomorrow/t m r /。
