定語從句(3) “介詞+關系代詞”引導的定語從句
一、 關系代詞的確定
“介詞+關系代詞”既可以引導限制性定語從句,也可以引導非限制性定語從句。在此結構中,先行詞指人時關系代詞用whom,不可以用who或that;先行詞指物時關系代詞用which,不可以用that。但如果介詞后置,則不受這種限制,限制性定語從句中的關系代詞還可以省去,尤其是在口語中。
二、介詞的選取
(3)The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is close to 6,400 kilometres in length—roughly 100 kilometres longer than the Yangtze River.
亞馬孫河是這片熱帶雨林名字的由來,全長約6 400千米——約比長江長100千米。
1.“介詞+關系代詞”中介詞的選取主要看以下三方面:
(1)根據定語從句修飾先行詞的習慣來確定介詞;
(2)根據定語從句中某些詞或短語的習慣搭配來確定介詞;
(3)根據上下文要表達的具體意思來確定介詞。
2.當定語從句中的動詞短語含有不可拆分的介詞時,該介詞不能放在關系代詞前面。常見的這類動詞短語有look at、 look into、 listen to、 hear from、 look after、 break into等。
三、“介詞+關系代詞”的特殊用法
(4)Look at the building, the roof of which(= whose roof) is white.
看那座建筑, 它的屋頂是白色的。
(5)There are two buildings, the larger of which stands nearly a hundred feet high.
這里有兩座建筑物,較大的那座幾乎有100英尺高。
1.the way作先行詞,后接定語從句時,若關系詞在從句中作狀語,則用in which/that,可省略。
2.“代詞(all/each/one/many/much/some/none/both)/數詞+of+which/whom”通常在定語從句中作主語,說明整體中的一部分。
3.“介詞+which”在定語從句中,可作時間、地點和原因狀語,代替相應的關系副詞when、where和why。
4.“the+名詞+of+which/whom”引導定語從句時,of which/whom充當定語,修飾前面的名詞,整個結構相當于“whose+名詞”引導的定語從句。
5.“the+形容詞比較級/最高級+of+which/whom”引導非限制性定語從句。
