After Twenty Years is set in the early 1900s, near the end of America’s Westward Expansion (美國(guó)西進(jìn)運(yùn)動(dòng)), which started in the early 1800s.
During the expansion, many Americans went to the West (美國(guó)西部) to make money. New York City is located in the north-east of the US and was already a big city by then.
