Because I wanted to challenge myself. You know, I’ve always been interested in a Silk Road and I’d like to explore it with my own feet. At first, I spent several months preparing the necessary travel documents. And then I bought walking boots and sleeping bags for the journey. Besides, I read a lot about the cultures of the countries along the Silk Road. I even tried to learn some of their languages, but they are too difficult for me.

Mostly through a translation device, I also use body language and even drawings. Luckily, most people I met were very kind and helpful. One cold night, I got lost in a village in northwest China. A local family offered me a hot meal and a place to stay for the night. It was a simple act of kindness, but it meant the world to me at that time.

A Missing Pill
Mary had always enjoyed her quiet life after retirement. Her life was changed when she had to look after her two-year-old grandson Tom for the summer all by herself. One morning, Mary was reading a book when Tom was playing with his toy soldier by her side. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Thinking it was all right to leave Tom alone for a short while, Mary stood up and went to answer the door. It was her new neighbor who came to give her some homemade cakes. They chatted for a few minutes, then Mary went back to Tom with the cakes. What she saw shocked her.

She checked his mouth and found nothing there. Then Mary collected the pills and counted them quickly. One pill was missing. Mary was terrified and decided to take Tom to the hospital right away. When Mary picked up Tom from the floor, a blue pill fell off from the toy soldier in Tom’s hand. It was the missing pill.
