The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Summer Solstice, the 10th solar term of the year, begins on June 21 this year and ends on July 6.

Summer Solstice is one of the first of China’s 24 Solar Terms to be established. It doesn’t represent the longest day, but is an important pivot upon which the year’s spiritual energy turns.

The characteristics
On the Summer Solstice itself, daylight lasts the longest for the whole year in the northern hemisphere. After this day, daylight hours get shorter and shorter and temperatures become higher in the northern hemisphere.

Summer Solstice is not the hottest time of the year. As Chinese folk saying goes: “The summer isn’t hot enough until Summer Solstice.” (夏至不過不熱) After Summer Solstice the temperature will continue to increase.
