After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.

X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad R ntgen (1845-1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation(放射線) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones(骨頭). Later, R ntgen took a photo of his wife’s hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray It’s because R ntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery(外科手術).

R ntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize(諾貝爾獎) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’t think. I investigated(研究).”
R ntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents(專利權) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.

六、 (2025·原創)閱讀理解。
The Summer Olympic Games ended in Paris, France. The world’s best players, about 10,500, took part in the Paris Games. They played 32 different sports. Over 10 million people saw the events in Paris. More than 30 million watched them from around the world.
Getting to the Olympics
The youngest athlete was an 11-year-old skateboarder from China—Zheng Haohao. The Olympics’ oldest athlete was a 65-year-old horseback rider from Spain.

Some athletes faced major health problems. The gymnast Sunisa “Suni” Lee won a gold medal in women’s gymnastics at the 2020 Olympics. In 2023, she found out that she had a serious illness. But she never gave up. She ended up winning three medals.
Going for greatness
The women on Team USA did very well. They won 67 of Team USA’s 126 medals. The US won the most medals. China won the second-most medals.
Shows of support

Almost 10 million fans watched the Olympic Games. Crowds greeted the athletes with cheers. Armand “Mondo” Duplantis is a Swedish pole vaulter(撐竿跳高運動員). He set a new world record. When that happened, fans in the stands made some serious noise.
Athletes showed support for one another, too. The DPRK and the ROK are neighbors. But they have a tense relationship. Still, table tennis players from the two countries took a photo together on the medal podium. The DPRK won silver. The ROK won bronze.
Goodbye, Paris; Hello, LA

Do you know the history of the zipper The zipper is a very common thing for us now. But it took people a long time to bring the small zipper into this world.
Whitcomb Judson produced the first zipper. The zipper was made up of some hooks(鉤子) and eyes(扣眼). At that time it was called the “Clasp Locker” and was not easy to use. Later Whitcomb opened a company to produce the “Clasp Locker”, but it didn’t sell well.

It was an electrical engineer called Gideon Sundback that helped make the modern zipper. At first, he worked for a big company. His skill was so good that he became the head designer(設計師). Unluckily, his wife died later. (A) After that, to get out of the sadness, he began to spend every minute improving the zipper. By December 1913, he had come up with the idea of the modern zipper. It was two lines of teeth guided by the slider. Gideon also designed the machine to produce his zipper. A machine could produce several hundred zippers each day.

It was about 20 years later that the zipper began to be widely used in the fashion. (B) In the 1930s, it was used in children’s clothes, making it possible for children to dress themselves. In 1937 French designers used zippers in men’s trousers instead of buttons. When zippers opened on both ends, they became more popular. Thanks to the early efforts of many famous zipper inventors, today zippers can meet people’s needs.
