(2024·江蘇徐州·中考真題)The police have many ways of catching criminals. One way of catching them is by fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is the study of the patterns on our fingertips. We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly the same for hundreds of years. However, it wasn’t until 1910 that the first criminal in the USA was convicted (被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence.
Early on the morning of September 19, 1910, Hiller’s wife noticed that the light which they usually left on was off. The only problem was no one saw the criminal. However, the police had started using fingerprinting at that time. According to Hiller’s wife, only several hours before Hiller’s death, he had painted some wood near the kitchen window. (2024·江蘇蘇州·中考真題)Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手電筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.
But something was different. Something had changed.

Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”

(2024·湖北武漢·模擬預測)Stefanie Perner has been skateboarding since she was a child, and for her, it’s much more than just a hobby. It’s her way of exploring a city and forming a connection wherever she goes.
When she arrived in Beijing from Germany at the age of 20, she found skateboarding to be her compass (指南針) in exploring this city. Her first impression of Beijing was its blend (融合) of ancient buildings and modern architecture (建筑), which provided an inclusive mix of skate spots. Each spot offered its own set of challenges and opportunities for creative expression.
The skateboarding community in Beijing had also taken her by surprise. She remembered the first time going out on a street skating session with her Canadian friend. (2024·浙江溫州·二模)
I saw her at the play and because of her invitation, I sat beside her. “Do you remember the first time I saw you You asked me to have lunch,” she asked.
Did I remember
It was twenty years ago. I was living in a tiny flat and making little money.
After reading my book, she wrote to ask if I’d have a chat with her and give her a lunch at Foyot’s. Foyot’s was such an expensive restaurant that I never went there before, but I had 80 and a lunch shouldn’t cost over 15. So I agreed.
Still, I was shocked to see the prices. They were much higher than I expected, but her words comforted me, “I never eat more than one thing for lunch.”
“Don’t say that!” I answered generously (慷慨地).
“I never eat more than one thing, except a little salmon (三文魚) ” Well, a beautiful salmon just came in Foyot’s. I ordered it for my guest. And the waiter asked if she’d have something else.
“No, I never eat more than one thing, unless you had caviar (魚子醬),” My heart sank (下沉), but I told the waiter to bring it. For myself, I chose the cheapest dish.
She talked happily while I was wondering whether I had enough money to pay the bill. If no, it’d be awful to borrow from my guest, and I’d say my money was stolen. It’d be worse if she had no enough money either. Then I had to leave my watch here.
She finished eating. “Coffee ” I asked. “No more than one thing, except ice cream and coffee.” I didn’t care now, ordering one for her and another for myself. Then a terrible thing happened. The waiter came with huge peaches, and my guest took one.
At last, the bill came. I knew she thought me mean (吝嗇的) when I left only 3 for the waiter as the tip, and there was nothing in my pocket.
“Follow my example,” she said as we left. “Never eat more than one thing for lunch.”
“I’ll do better,” I replied. “I’ll eat nothing for dinner tonight.”

(2024·廣東廣州·二模)When his ship was damaged in a storm, Gulliver was washed up on the island of Lilliput. All of the people, animals and things in that country were tiny. The average Lilliputian stood only six inches tall—so to them, Gulliver was a giant!
He soon made friends with the Emperor of Lilliput and the emperor’s family. They made sure that their guest was well taken care of! Each day, he was served with good meals.
Gulliver repaid the Lilliputians’ kindness by doing jobs for them. He could plough (犁) a field with his comb, lift rocks without difficulty and construct stone houses as if he was playing with toy blocks.
The only problem for Gulliver was getting a good night’s sleep! He had a quilt that was made of many Lilliputian blankets, and it was very comfortable. But his bed was made from lots of tiny beds tied together—and it was terribly uncomfortable! He couldn’t sleep well. After too many sleepless nights, Gulliver had an idea.
He made a plan on the largest piece of paper he could find. The emperor and empress looked at it, nodded, and began giving orders to their people. People in Lilliput tried their best to help to make his “invention”.
After many days, Gulliver’s invention was ready, and all the tiny people gathered to see it. The thing was about two metres long, and it looked like a strange floppy balloon.
The crowd watched as Gulliver picked it up and began blowing into it through a tiny valve (閥門) in the side. It started to puff (噴出) up as he filled it with lungfuls of air.
At last, it was full, and he plugged the valve with a cork. The object looked like a huge rectangular cake as it sat on the ground!
