Chinese people don’t always give a clock to someone. A clock sounds like “zhong” in Chinese. So giving someone a clock is like saying “your time is up”. People will think it’s not lucky, especially for old people.
Buying pears and shoes is also not a good gift. Pears sound like “li” and shoes sound like “xie” in Chinese. They are not good gifts for friends or parents, because they mean something bad in Chinese.
What is a good gift then Money can be the answer! A “red envelope” (紅包) with money is the best gift in China. People give red envelopes to show their love. You may have already forgotten the days when you had to learn how to use chopsticks. Every Chinese kid has to learn to use them for some time. But chopsticks are not just simple tools to pick up food. They come with their own special rules and traditions.
Playing with chopsticks is seen as bad manners, just as playing with forks and knives in a Western country would be rude.
There are also some superstitions (迷信) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense (香) that Chinese people use to honour the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.
You should not tap chopsticks on the edge of the bowl either, as beggars do this to ask for food. Parents might get angry if children do this as they don’t want their children to be as poor as beggars in the future.
Apart from (除了) being tableware (餐具), chopsticks can also be a great gift. In Chinese, “chopsticks” are known as “kuaizi”, which means having babies soon. Newlyweds (新婚夫婦) sometimes receive chopsticks as a wedding gift. Skilled craftsmen (手藝人) paint beautiful images on chopsticks to make them look like a fine artwork.

When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. The ways of greeting are not always the same in different countries.
In America, two people usually greet each other with a handshake. It is a way to show respect (尊重) to the other person. Athletes (運動員) from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don’t shake hands when they meet people they already know well. When American friends meet each other, they might only wave (揮手), or maybe just nod (點頭) their heads.
Kissing is sometimes used as a way to greet someone. In France, when people meet, they kiss each other on the face.
In Japan, people bow to each other every time they meet. Even family members bow to each other. How low to bow depends on how respected the other person is.
Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. People can do this with a quick “hi”, a handshake, or even a simple smile. The important thing is that the people they are greeting understand them.
1.What does the passage mainly talk about
2.Why do athletes from opposite teams shake hands before a game in America
3.Do all American friends greet each other with a handshake when they meet each other

Many books have been written about the art of giving. But what about the art of receiving Sometimes receiving a gift can be difficult, especially when someone buys you a gift you don’t want.
“I remember when I was about twelve years old, my parents bought me a purple wallet,” laughs Mary. “It really made me feel embarrassed (尷尬), because to be honest, I thought the wallet was really ugly! Still, I pretended (假裝) that I liked it because I knew it would make my parents happy.”
Bill agrees. “That sounds like my grandparents. A few years ago, my grandparents gave me an orange sweater for my birthday. I used to wear it every time I visited their house, but when I left their house, I took it off! Of course, this made me feel guilty (內疚的). It was a very nice thought, but my grandparents and I have different tastes! I think it’s hard to buy clothes or other personal things for people.”
To make things easier, some people would rather just give money. In some cultures, however, receiving money can make people uncomfortable. “When someone gives me money, it just makes me think they are being lazy”, says John Wilson, “In England, we have a saying: It’s the thought that counts. I prefer to receive a gift that has some thought behind it. I don’t mind if it’s something I don’t need. If someone has thought about a gift for me, it always makes me happy.”
Different people have very different thoughts on this subject! So maybe the art of receiving is even more difficult than the art of giving. What do you think
1.How did Mary feel when she received a purple wallet
2.When did Bill wear the orange sweater
3.Why do some people like to give money
4.What gift does John Wilson like
5.If you receive a gift from your parents, but you don’t like it, what will you do

If you spend some time in an English speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However, if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China, we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone, “Would you mind doing this ” or “Would you mind not doing that ” People don’t usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.
Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him, “Would you mind picking it up ”
1.What does the underlined word “etiquette” probably mean
2.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
3.If your friend talks loudly in the museum, what would you say to him/her
4.In which countries can people stand close to the person they are talking with
5.What does the writer think of “etiquette” in the last paragraph

Gift-giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
When people give gifts, sometimes colour is important. For example, for many Chinese people around the world, red is a lucky colour, and people often like to wrap (包) gifts in red. However, do you know that in Korea, red is a colour of bad things If you want to give gifts to people there, you shouldn’t wrap the gifts in this colour.
What about Western (西方的) countries In Western countries, the colour of wrapping paper is not really important. But colour is really important when giving flowers, especially roses. Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs so that they will not think us ill-mannered(沒有禮貌的). Here are examples of the things that a person with good education does or does not do.
If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in, please.” After you come into the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a table before you or sent to your hand, you will say “thank you” and receive it with two hands, not one hand or they will think you are ill-mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is a good manner to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes the drink or the food to show he has enjoyed it. That will make the host pleasant.
1. Does the writer think it is necessary to know different customs in different countries
2.When can you enter the room if you visit a friend in China
3.What should you say when a cup of tea is sent to your hand
4.In which country do you have to take off your shoes before entering a house

Now, more and more foreigners are living in China. They are studying or working here. They love China very much, and are used to the daily life here. But sometimes they have problems. For example, some of them don’t know how to give gifts. There are some suggestions for them.
It’s necessary to bring a gift.
In China, it’s a traditional custom to bring a gift when you are invited to someone’s home.
Usually fresh flowers and fruits are your best choices. The number “eight” is considered lucky, so eight apples or eight oranges are a good idea.
You’d better wrap(包裝) your gift.
When you buy a gift, the seller usually helps you wrap the gift. Don’t be surprised if your gift is wrapped. Because wrapping paper can make your gifts look more beautiful. In China, people don’t open gifts at once. They usually do it in the evening or after you leave.
Give something that can be shared.
If you have some co-workers, don’t give gifts to only one person. You’d better treat them equally. It’s better to give something that can be shared, like food.

In the eyes of many foreigners, the Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. And Western hosts sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests. It is because the guest-host relationship(關系)in China is quite different from that in some western countries.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese friend’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to(根據)the host’s way of doing things is usual behaviour for a guest.
My wife’s mother, a very kind Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that.
In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their houses. At the very least, you should ask “Is it OK if I smoke ” But don’t be surprised if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.” In my culture, if you smoke in their houses, you are a bad guest, but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their houses, they are not rude hosts.
In a word, no matter where you are, the best way to be a good guest is to adapt to(適應)the local customs. Just as the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
1.To many foreigners, who are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world
2.What is usual behaviour for a guest in the west
3.How does the writer feel when he sees some guests smoking in his wife’s mother’s home
4.If a guest wants to smoke in an American host’s home, what question should he ask
5.What do you think is impolite for a guest to do (請自擬一句話作答)
Akuapem is in the eastern part of Ghana. The sun there shines all the time. The local people are very friendly and hospitable (好客的). Now let’s have a look at how Akuapem people receive a visitor.
A visitor is often welcomed warmly in a family of Akuapem. After the visitor is welcomed into the house, he is offered a seat and water at the very beginning, because the host thinks that the visitors must have come from a very long journey and need water. If there is a group of visitors, the host will greet the visitors from right to left. And the host shakes only with his right hand, because Akuapem people think the left hand is not clean.
Next, the visitor is asked how his journey was and why he has come. While the conversation (對話) is going on, the wife and the children, especially girls, are preparing food for the visitor. The visitor can choose his favourite food. After the visitor finishes eating, the host and the visitor go on with their conversation. Usually this is a short one because the visitor is getting ready to say “Goodbye”.
When the visitor is leaving, he is often given some food. He is also accompanied (陪伴) by one of the children to the nearest station. The child who accompanies the visitor will not come back home until the visitor leaves safely.
Whether he is a close friend or just a stranger, this is always how friendly Akuapem people receive a visitor.
1.What are the people in Akuapem like
2.How do the Akuapem people often welcome a visitor
3.Why is a visitor often offered water at the very beginning
4.Can a visitor choose his favourite food
5.When will the child who accompanies the visitor return home

Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal. They include how to handle knives, forks and spoons and how to eat in a polite manner. To behave well abroad, you are to know some table manners.
EATING MANNERS
Japan: It is “perfectly” okay to slurp (發出嘖嘖聲) when you eat noodles. Unlike making big noises, slurping slightly is not rude. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp.
Russia: Your wrists should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in left hand, and knife in the right. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat.
France: Never discuss money or religion over dinner. What is different from the manners in Russia is that finishing everything on your plate is considered good manners.
Mexico: Whenever you catch the eye of someone who’s eating, even a stranger, it’s good manners to say “provecho”, which means enjoy. In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It’s a social occasion — lunches are seldom quick and suppers can last for hours. Where you sit matters in the country. You must say “enjoy your meal” before you leave the table.
DRINKING MANNERS
America: If you empty a bottle into someone’s glass, it obliges that person to buy the next bottle. It’s polite to put the last drops into your own glass.
Australia: In a pub it’s usual to buy a round of drinks for everyone in your group. When it’s your turn, say “It’s my round”. When it’s their round, they will buy it for you. Don’t leave before you’ve bought a round.
Japan: Don’t fill your own glass of alcohol. Instead, you should pour for others and wait for them to do it for you.

Table manners can be very different in different cultures.
In China, when inviting guests for a meal, it’s polite to wait for the elderly to start eating first. We also use chopsticks gently and try not to make loud noises.
In France, dinner is a special time. People often say “Bon appetite!” to show their wishes for a good meal. Usually, French people taste each dish and enjoy the flavors (味道). And it may take hours for French people to finish a dinner.
In Japan, dining is a quiet and respectful thing. If a conversation is needed, it’s important for people to speak in a low voice. People sit upright and use chopsticks and bowls carefully. It’s polite to say “Itadakimasu” before they start to eat, which means “I humbly receive”.
In the US, people usually eat simple food such as a sandwich instead of spending a lot of time preparing a big meal. However, it’s still important to be careful with manners and never to eat with your mouth open or elbows (肘) on the table.

Diner parties usually start between 7 and 8 p.m. and end at about 11 p.m. Ask your hosts (主人) what time you should arrive. It’s polite to bring some flowers, chocolate or a bottle of wine (酒) as a gift.
Usually dinners start with drinks. Do you want to be polite Say how much you like the room or the pictures on the wall. But remember it’s not polite to ask how much things cost.
In many families, the husband sits at one end of the table and the wife sits at the other end. They eat with their guests.
You’ll probably start the meal with soup or something small, and then you’ll have meat or fish with vegetables. Finally, you’ll have dessert. It’s polite to finish everything on your plate and take more if you want.

Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you want a great visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of the country you are visiting.
People in India think it impolite to use the left hand to pass food at table. The left hand is used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shake his head at another to show that he doesn’t agree. However, in many parts of India shaking the head means “yes”.
In Bulgaria, you shake your head to mean “yes” and nod to mean “no”.
At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula (阿拉伯半島), you will find that your glass is full again as soon as you drink up . If you think that you have had enough, you can put your hand over the top.
In Europe it’s quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting and talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring trouble. Also, you should try not to touch the head of an adult (成人)—it’s just not good in Thailand.

People love their cell phones. They use them anywhere and everywhere. They talk in the car or on the bus. They talk in the shop or at the mall. They even talk on their cell phones when watching films.
The growing use of cell phones has also created a growing culture of rude behaviour. People are becoming so used to seeing and hearing cell phones, that some have forgotten proper cell phone etiquette. Yes, there are some dos and don’ts of cell phone use.
One of the worst habits of cell phone users is “cell yell”, or loud conversations in public places. Cell phone users need to respect the personal space of those around them. Loud, long rings are annoying. One should turn down your phone ringer (電話鈴聲) or better yet, turn it to vibrate (震動).
Remember, if the lights are off, your cell phone should be off too. It is rude to leave your cell phone ringer on in the cinema. It’s even ruder if you answer your phone and talk when watching the film. The same is true for concerts, plays, musicals and lectures. If the spotlight is not on you, you shouldn’t be talking.
Respect the rules of those places that request no cell phone use on their sites. When you make or receive calls, electromagnetic waves (電磁波) are sent through the air. Hospitals and airplanes have many electronic devices (儀器). When electromagnetic waves try to go through them, they sometimes stop working. A heart monitor could fail to work properly. A plane could crash.
The next time you turn on your beloved cell phone, think of those around you. Help create a kinder world, not a ruder one.
1.What is “cell yell”
2.What does the underlined word “etiquette” mean
3.How are cell phone calls carried through the air
4.Why should cell phones not be used on airplanes
5.What are some good manners of cell phone use (舉兩個例子)
Traveling to another country is exciting and fun. But if you don’t learn about local traditions, your trip may get into trouble. To help stop things like that, I list some cultural taboos (禁忌) in several countries. Let’s take a look and then you can have a great trip there.
Mexico
In Mexico, bringing an expensive gift to someone’s home is a no-no. It could be seen as a bribe (賄賂). For local people, some simple things like flowers are good gifts. But you shouldn’t take along red flowers, because in Mexican culture, they symbolize death and can be connected with witchcraft (巫術).
The US
Americans have a tradition of tipping (給小費). You can tip waiters, taxi drivers, hotel doormen…nearly anyone with a service job.
Pay attention when you talk with Americans. Questions like “How old are you ” may be common between friends. But as tourists in the US, it is not polite to ask people’s age.
Britain
British people are known for queuing (排隊). From the supermarket to the underground, queues are very common in Britain. Usually, it takes a British person six months of their life in queues. If you jump the queue in Britain, you may make them angry.
Japan
You should never wear shoes indoors in Japan. When visiting someone’s home, it is rude to enter with shoes on. Shoes should be taken off at the door and replaced with indoor slippers (拖鞋). This is also the same when you try clothes on in a clothes shop. You should take off your shoes before going into the fitting room (試衣間). There are indoor shoes prepared for customers inside.
1.What are good gifts for local people in Mexico
2.Why shouldn’t tourists ask people’s age in the US
3.How long does it usually take a British person in queues

A visitor is often welcomed warmly in a family of Akuapem.
