Wool is a great natural material that has been used by humans. It comes from the soft coat of sheep. Humans have been wearing wool for over 12,000 years. Today, more than 100 million sheep around the world are used each year for woollen products, like sweaters and scarves.
Why do so many people like woollen products One of the great things about wool is that it is a great insulator. This means it keeps us warm when it’s cold outside. It also has tiny air pockets that trap (收集) heat, making it perfect for those cold days.
Another advantage of wool is that it is breathable. It allows air to pass through, keeping us cool in the summer as well. Unlike other materials, it can prevent us from overheating, and make us feel comfortable.
Wool is not only warm and breathable, but it is also durable (耐用的) and long-lasting. It’s strong enough for outdoor activities like hiking or playing in the snow. Woollen clothes can be passed down from one generation (一代人) to another, creating a beautiful connection between family members.
Making wool products requires a lot of efforts and a series of processes, which start with cutting. The sheep farmers cut the wool off the sheep by hand in spring. In some places, farmers use machines to do this quickly. Don’t worry: cutting is safe and painless for the sheep, just like getting a haircut! After the cutting, hundreds of kilos of wool are packed together. Once the wool is collected, it goes through a process called scouring. It means wool is washed to remove any dirt and oil. Then the wool is made into yarn (紗線), which is used to make different woollen products. After the yarn is coloured, skilled workers make it into various products.
Wool is made into all kinds of woollen products after processing and is used widely in our daily life.
21. How does the writer show that wool is a great material in Paragraph 1
A. By explaining ideas. B. By showing facts. C. By comparing reasons.
22. What’s the advantage of wool according to the passage
A. It can be used for a long time. B. It can stop air from passing through. C. It can produce and give out heat.
23. What does the underlined word “scouring” mean
A. Cutting. B. Making up. C. Cleaning.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as Open AI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of Open AI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than Open AI’s model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
25. How much did the team spend in building DeepSeek-R1
A. $5.58 million. B. $65 billion. C. $10 million.
26. What can we learn about DeepSeek-R1 from paragraph 2
A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It becomes better through practice. C. It copies answers from other AIs.
27. Why is DeepSeek-R1 called “a big step forward”
A. It uses the most expensive tools.
B. It shows smart ideas can beat expensive tools.
C. It was created by U.S. scientists.
28. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To compare Chinese and American, AI technologies.
B. To explain how computer chips work.
C. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.

One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker (看管人), went with him. I pulled the cart (二輪車). The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare not to go forward, and I made a dead stop, “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward,
“Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter ” shouted my master, “The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it. You’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home, the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
John took me to the stable (馬廄). Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it, for I was tired.

My family has always had family dinner, as far as I can remember. Since I was a little boy, my mother has insisted (堅持) that we attend family dinners at least once a week. Every Sunday, my mother would prepare a lot of food and bring it to my grandmother’s house. We would wait for more family members to come before eating together at table, my grandmother’s dinner table.
I used to feel that was a silly little tradition. But now I find it’s wonderful to get together as a family to talk about anything and everything after a long week of school and work. Every time I sit at the dinner table my grandmother’s dinner table, I look around and find so many people who truly love me, a warm feeling comes to my mind. It’s a love that feels so warm and nice. For me, dinner is not just a meal, but a chance to reconnect (重新連接) with each other.
I finally realize the true meaning of this tradition. It’s not about the dinners or activities. It’s about family, a group of people who care about each other. All the memories around my grandmother’s dinner table will last forever.
