Imagine a world with no more wild animals: no elephants, no tigers or lions. To most people, that thought is too terrible. So they are doing something about it. Betty is one of them.
Being surrounded by wild animals—feeding them and caring for them—is all Betty has wanted to do with her life. And that is exactly what she does!
Betty is the human “mother” to the 500 animals that live on her family wildlife farm in San. Antonio, Texas. On the farm, she cares for animals from all over the world. She says she loves them all. However, two giraffes (長頸鹿) take up a special place in her heart. The population of giraffes in the wild has declined by 80% in the last 15 years. “I’m so glad to get help from five wildlife researchers. All our hard work helps protect giraffes living in the wild.”
Besides her animal caring, Betty also holds a monthly class, where she teaches school children about animals. Betty also opens the farm to the public. Visitors not only learn about the animals, they can also get close to them. For animals, people are part of their natural environment.
The farm is a conservation (保護) area, an educational center and an animal park. As the animals walk peacefully around the grounds, it is easy to forget that San Antonio, a busy city, is just a few minutes away.

2.Why do two giraffes take up a special place in Betty’s heart
3.How often does Betty teach school children about animals

Shadow puppets (皮影戲) is a famous Chinese art of storytelling. It is more than 2,000 years old. Although there was lots of earlier information of shadow play in China, it wasn’t clearly written in history books until the Northern Song dynasty. During the Tang dynasty, shadow play became an art in China and was popular with people and many people loved it very much during the Song dynasty. People performed it when they had holidays and festivals. In the Yuan dynasty, it was performed in some other countries.
During the play, the performers stand behind a screen with a light behind them. They control the puppets with thin sticks in their hands and they put the puppets very close to the screen so people can see it clearly. They tell the story by singing. Shadow puppets are made of leather (皮革). Each puppet is painted in bright colors and put on a stick. Different colors are used to show good and bad persons in the drama. Some puppets have movable (移動) arms and legs.
In fact, being a shadow play artist is not easy. The performer needs to spend a long time watching and studying how people and animals move. Before giving the performance, he needs to practice very hard. In this way, he can do well in the play to make people think the puppets real. What’s more, working with others together is also important during the play, because a puppet may need four or five sticks and two or three performers to control it together.
Now, with TV and films, shadow play is not as popular as it once was, but it is a symbol of Chinese culture for sure and we Chinese should develop it.

These websites also let travelers write about and show photos of the sights, shops and restaurants they went to. Shadow puppetry (皮影戲) started during the Western Han Dynasty and it has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap.
The puppets are usually made from leather (皮革) or paper. It is hard to make them. The puppet-makers have to take 24 steps, which include washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting, to make a puppet.
Just like many things that are in danger, traditional arts also face the risk of disappearing. “Many young people still think that shadow puppetry is an old-fashioned folk art,” said Liu Chaokan, the sixth-generation inheritor (繼承人) of shadow puppetry in Yunnan province.
Liu understands why old art forms couldn’t interest young people, so he connects new stories with the traditional form of storytelling. In a recent show based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West, Baigujing dances to a Korean pop song. Popular Chinese cartoon characters, together with the modern factors (元素), are Liu’s secret in getting the attention of children. “Since they couldn’t understand those old stories, why don’t we show them the cartoon characters they love in shadow puppetry shows ” said Liu.
To keep the old art forever young, Liu thinks they should respect (尊重) its traditions and protect the basic of the art.
