A biker wearing a funny hat passes by a Charcoal Chicken shop. Two men wearing sunglasses edge around a man lying on a street corner. A group of Hare Krishnas sing and play instruments as they dance.
These are three of many moments frozen in time by photographer Mary Hutchinson on Cuba St, perhaps Wellington’s most-wandered street-and certainly its coolest.
Last May, Hutchinson chose 60 Cuba St photos for her third book of black-and-white photography, Cuba People, self-published to time with her exhibition at Cuba St’s. Thistle Hall. Various passers-by recognized friends in the prints, and told her about the people pictured. Some told those friends to stop by. “Three women from the Hare Krishna photo came in, all excited,” she says. “They filmed me beside the photo, and I photographed them beside it. That was so much fun.”
Hutchinson photographs in black and white like the pioneers of street photography. Legally, you can photograph anyone in public, but often she asks permission first or-when the moment’s about to be gone-afterwards. The vast majority says yes, and she offers to email them copies. “Sometimes, people are unaware they’ve been photographed, but I make a judgment about whether they’ll mind or not.”
Hutchinson says she wants to be “a voice for the unfamous people”. Consequently, homeless people, beggars and addicts populate the pages of Cuba People and her book Newtown Forever, which accompanied her exhibition at the Newtown Festival. “That’s partly because I see those people around, and partly because they often get blanked by people like me. I want to balance that out a bit.”
“I want to show our shared human nature and the contrasting lifestyles in our urban communities,” she says. “I once photographed an old man with amazing eyes. I didn’t know him but a friend did, and she gave his family a copy after he died. That’s what moves me: the times in life when something unexpectedly joins up.”
4. Which of the following could be seen in “the photo” underlined in paragraph 3
A. People dancing and singing. B. A bicyclist passing by a shop.
C. Hutchinson and the three women. D. The exhibition at Cuba St’s Thistle Hall.
5. What is the probable reason why Hutchinson asks permission to photograph someone
A. It is required by law. B. It is required in Wellington.
C. She wants to show respect for them. D. She wants to attract their attention.
6. What is the main purpose of Cuba People
A. To promote street photography. B. To present a colorful urban life.
C. To show what happens on Cuba St. D. To get ordinary people known to the public.
7. What can we infer about the photo of the old man
A. It is related to country life. B. It caused some unexpected problems.
C. It reminds people of good times in life. D. It turned out to be precious to his family.

Catfish effect is the effect that a strong competitor has in causing the weak to better themselves. Actions done to actively apply this effect in an organization are termed catfish management.
In Norway, live sardines are several times more expensive than frozen ones, and are valued for better texture and flavor. It was said that only one ship could bring live sardines home, and the shipmaster kept his method a secret. After he died, people found that there was one catfish in the tank. The catfish keeps swimming, and the sardines try to avoid this predator (捕食者). This increased level of activity keeps the sardines active, thus, increasing their survival rate greatly.
Catfish effect has been one of the hottest topics in human resources management. Therefore, I will keep the explanation short and sweet. When an outsider joins a well-established team as a competitor, he causes the weak to better their performance. This method is meant to motivate each of the teammates to feel the competition in order to keep up the competitiveness level of the whole team.
However, adding a catfish in the team can also bring in the downside in the group’s dynamics.
The team would go back to the storming stage. Under-performers would become more negative about the change that the catfish tried to implement (實施) because they would see it as a threat. The failed attempt of implementation of changing will create under-performance in the team as a whole, which will lead to a greater management challenge.
The key employee or backbone employee will feel demotivated because the opportunity to get a more senior job has decreased. If there are too many catfish in the company, this would generate a stressful work environment. The employee would constantly worry if they are being “preyed” by the catfish. The mental burden would create a harmful corporate culture and increase the distrust between employees.
A high standard is required on the catfish. The catfish would eventually turn into a leading role in the team. Lack in leadership skill from the catfish would lead to a bigger chaos in the workplace. Worst situation would be setting up a bad leadership role model to further an unhealthy competitive environment.
8. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about
A. The magic trick of catching sardines. B. The underlying logic of the effect.
C. The exact origin of the legend. D. The great wisdom of a catfish.
9. What may a catfish mean to backbones of the company
A. Unfair corporate culture. B. Violent work environment.
C. Great management challenge. D. Reduced promotion chance.
10. Which might be the solution to the downside of a catfish
A. Qualifying a catfish for a leading role. B. Setting up a harmonious relationship.
C. Creating a less competitive workplace. D. Stopping a catfish entering a company.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards adding a catfish in the company
A. Subjective. B. Pessimistic. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
When you see someone take the first sip of freshly-made milk tea, their face looks like pure joy. Today, millions of people enjoy this experience. Across the world, customers flock to their favorite spots to meet with friends and savor (細品) these tasty drinks.
In the early 2000s, though, milk tea was just coming on the scene. The few brands that had successfully established themselves in the industry were dearly concerned: Would milk tea just be another fashion food Sure, people are enjoying it today, but would they still be in a year, or five years And with so much new excitement for this product, would people be able to distinguish milk tea companies These are the questions that Serenitea, a milk tea company, faced in 2014. While successfully opening 60 stores, they found themselves in a strategic fog, which led them to research into the deep, unexplored psychology of milk tea.
Like Airbnb, Serenite a partnered with an agency, CIA Bootleg Manila (CBM) which specializes in finding out deep consumer insights. The agency adopted a series of intensive,psychological-based techniques in their market research. Specifically, they explore the consumers’ deeper, emotional connections to milk tea, including their earliest childhood memories of milk and tea.
What they found was that milk tea was a complex topic. Their research revealed that milk tea produced three consistent psychological responses. First, people were connected to milk through the concept of nurture (營養); They fondly remembered their childhood and being cared for by their mothers. Next, consumers connected tea to its healing properties. They would recall receiving tea when they had a stomachache or seeing their parents drinking herbal tea for health reasons. Lastly, they associated milk tea itself with teenage fun: a guilty pleasure of their youth.
They had uncovered three psychological cornerstones (基石) of the milk tea experience: nurture, healing, and teenage fun. This set of insights was important. By taking these factors into consideration, milk tea brands could make a plan of an entirely new path.
12 What was Serenitea’s concern in the early 2000s
A. Whether milk tea would become too expensive.
B. Whether milk tea would lose its flavor over time.
C. Whether milk tea would attract too many competitors.
D. Whether milk tea would remain popular in the long term.
13. What does CBM find about milk tea
A. Milk tea is welcomed by parents.
B. Milk tea is associated with teenage fun.
C. Milk tea does harm to our mental health.
D. Milk tea has no healing effect on consumers.
14. What could brands do to make a new path
A. Pay more attention to the package.
B. Locate more stores in the big cities.
C. Offer as many new flavors as possible.
D. Focus on milk tea’s psychological value.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Revealing Milk Tea Psychology
B. How to Make Milk Tea Popular
C. Sharing the Pure Joy of Milk Tea
D. A New Method to Business Success

Most of us grab a cup of coffee and a quick bite in the morning and eat more as the day goes on. ___16___ However, more and more studies on health suggest we may be doing it all backward.
___17___ It suggests that we should start our day with a big breakfast and follow it with a smaller lunch and a light supper. More research is needed, but a series of experiments in animals and humans have pointed in the same direction: ___18___ “I always tell people not to eat close to bedtime,” said a doctor in the United States. “Try to eat earlier in the day.”
“Having the largest meal in the morning appears to have advantages for weight control compared with having a large meal in the evening,” said one of the researchers. Our body uses insulin(胰島素) to process the sugars in foods, she explained. The action of the hormone (激素) appears to be at its peak performance early in the day. “If you give a healthy individual a big meal in the morning, the blood glucose(葡萄糖) might stay high one or two hours before coming back to normal,” Dr. Kahleova added. “Now, you give the same big meal to the same healthy individual at night. ___19___” Doctors call this “evening diabetes(糖尿病)”.
Dr. Kahleova said that the message is simple. It’s just like the old proverb: “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.” Good as it is, this piece of advice may be hard to follow. Nowadays, family life and social get-togethers often sit down to a big meal at the end of the day. ___20___
A. Doctors have already taken note.
B. The blood glucose will stay high up to three hours.
C. The largest meal of the day usually comes in the evening.
D. A U. S. survey of the diet patterns provides the latest evidence.

Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were going to drive from New York to Virginia to visit relatives. She could not wait. She had missed playing with her cousins and talking to her aunt and uncle.
After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Joan’s dad looked to Joan and her mother. “Is everyone ready for our road trip ” They both grinned (露齒而笑) and nodded.
It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed that the car began to veer (突然變向) to the side of the road.
Joan’s father got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great sigh. He poked his head through the passenger side window. “We have a flat tire,” he said to Joan’s mom.
“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia,” she suggested. Joan’s father looked down at his feet sheepishly (羞怯地). “I ... haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”
Her mother seemed frustrated (沮喪), but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,” she suggested.
But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no reception in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly (茫然地) at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.
Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center.
Joan looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia Her relatives would surely be worried about them.

【46題答案】
【答案】 I’m Li Hua, Chairman of the Students’ Union. I represent the Students’ Union to make a proposal “care for the environment”.
Nowadays, the environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious and global warming causes frequent extreme weather, which warns us that protecting the environment is becoming urgent.
As students, we should do our parts. Firstly, participate in voluntary work such as planting trees and picking up rubbish. Additionally, it is strongly suggested that we live a low-carbon life. 【答案】 When Joan looked out the window, she saw a car approaching. She waved to the driver and shouted loudly. Fortunately, the car stopped, and an old lady got out of the car. She said, “What’s going on, dear ” Joan explained the whole accident in detail. The lady said, “I will go home and ask my husband to help you. He is good at fixing cars.” Joan looked at the lady in disbelief, not believing her husband would come. However, she had no choice. Finally, she watched the old lady’s car slowly disappear at the end of the road.
Joan saw clouds in the sky, and it began to rain. The only thing they could do was to stay in the car. The sky was getting darker, but no one came. Joan was worried. Suddenly, one small shining light popped up, and a man appeared. He said, “I’m here to help you.” “He is the old lady’s husband,” Joan cried, not believing what she saw. He didn’t have to offer help, but he volunteered to come anyway. He quickly replaced the tire, and the car started again. The family thanked the man and went to their relatives’ house. Whenever Joan recalls this experience, she always feels warm and thankful.
