January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named Deep Seek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as Open AI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of Open AI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than Open AI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a Deep Seek engineer said “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

Lin Tao, a young boy in Shenyang, realized the value of voluntary work after doing community service.
Last month his school organized a volunteering event. He repulsed to take part at first, because he thought it was meaningless. All the other classmates signed up for the event actively and his teacher encouraged him to join them. Therefore, he decided to have a try.
The event was held at a local park, where students got together to clean up litter, plant trees and paint walls. Lin Tao thought the work was boring and tiring. I was walking down the street in Beijing the other day and passed a couple sitting on a bench. “She must be 180 centimeters tall,” I heard the woman say to the man. I turned to look at them straight in the eye at once. I felt angry and awkward (尷尬的) that they were talking about me. The woman suddenly said, “Oh, she must understand Chinese.” “Yes, I do,” I replied. Then, they both smiled and laughed, and so did I.
This was yet another time in China when strangers stared or talked about my appearance (外表). It’s either because of my unusually tall height as a woman or because I am a foreigner. As a shy person, this makes me feel quite uncomfortable. I just want to fit in! I usually just try to ignore (忽視) such people, but this time, as soon as I talked to the couple, they changed from strangers to people I just shared a warm and funny moment with.
It reminded me how important it is to have the right attitude (態度) and to be understanding. There aren’t that many foreigners in China, so it’s only natural that Chinese people will feel curious about foreigners and how they look different.
