One of the biggest advantages of a holiday in Chongming is that it’s really close to the city of Shanghai. When I visited the island in 2021 with my parents for the first time, we took Bus Shen-Chong Line 2 from Pudong, Shanghai. It took us thirty minutes from our home to the bus stop in Pudong. And the one-way trip to Chongming Island took only one and a half hours.
We stayed at a comfortable resort (度假勝地) in the east of the island first. We spent the morning visiting Chinese-style buildings and large gardens. ▲ Then in the afternoon, we spent some hours exploring (探索) the Dongtan Wetland Park—its lakes, bamboo, birds and sheep. On our second day, we visited the Chongming Museum. The museum tells stories of the island’s history. There was a show about old boats and the famous traveler Zheng He. If you feel sad or upset, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be more suitable for you.
Some scientists at Ohio State University, the U.S., have found that sad movies can make people happier. They published their study in a magazine called Communication Research.
Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated. They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness.
According to the result of the survey, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives and pared to those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.
“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad moods (情緒) would make people more thoughtful. “Good moods are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But bad emotions, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Therefore, seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad, but that will cause you to think more about your own close relationships and value them more.”

Dear Mary,
How is everything going with you I am writing this letter to invite you to go to attend a talk held by our school. It will be held at 9 a.m. on 12 June at the school hall.
The purpose of the talk is to teach the students rules for eating. There will be a lot of advice on table manners. For example, you should not start eating until everyone is ready, and it is impolite to make too much noise while eating or drinking. You should not talk or eat with food in your mouth. Before you leave, wait for everyone to finish. These will make both guests and hosts comfortable at the table.
Mary, I know you are interested in Chinese table manners. So, would you please come to attend it with me I am sure you will find it useful.
