Tu Youyou’s discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素) and its use in the treatment of malaria (瘧疾) is regarded as one of the most significant breakthroughs of the 20th century. For her groundbreaking work, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 5, 2015.
Tu is the first female citizen of the People’s Republic
of China to receive a Nobel Prize in any category.
