At the breakfast

Moments later

After receiving the order to abandon ship

For many years

The next day

Today
wake-up call came as usual,
made bed,
helped clean the room

Huge crushing sound from above——Japanese planes circled like eagles.

A bomb hit the USS Arizona and Russell was thrown more than 100 meters across the ship.

Louis saved more men from the water, dragging them into the lifeboat.

Russell refused to talk about what happened that morning, describing it simply as “hell”.

President Roosevelt declared war on Japan.

The USS Arizona lies where it sank, whose location is marked with a memorial shaped like a bridge

Before the attack As usual, the wake-up call came at 5:45 a.m. The men aboard the warship USS Arizona went to the washroom, dressed in their uniforms and sat down to breakfast.
During the attack Hundreds of Japanese planes circled like eagles and dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor, and one hit the USS Arizona from above. Clouds of black smoke rose into the sky and hung over the sea. Russell was severely injured. Louis helped the injured ones and saved more men from water even after receiving the order to abandon ship. Russell was saved and survived.

4. Please retell what happened that day from Louis’s perspective.
Everything seemed normal that day. When we sat down to breakfast aboard the USS Arizona, a bomb hit our ship. I was fortunate to have only minor injuries. When I got to the deck, what I saw was terrible. Many of my friends were dead or thrown into the sea. I tried my best to help those who were still alive and saved many people’s lives. Some people regard me as a hero, but I think heroes are the ones that gave their lives that day.

Step
1. Read the first paragraph and answer the following questions.
◆ What’s the main idea of the first paragraph
It describes the routine of the crew’s daily life.

3
Step
◆ What is the function of the last sentence
The last sentence creates suspense because the reader’s attention is drawn to the possibility that it would not be a normal day on board the ship. The sentence also presents a sharp contrast between the first and second paragraphs, thus impressing the reader with the cruelty of the sudden attack. Meanwhile, it lays the groundwork for the following paragraphs which describe the attack in detail.

Step
4. Read the article again and underline the sentences showing the war’s physical and mental impacts on individuals.
Physical impacts
He suffered serious burns on his hands, arms and legs, and watched many of his friends die.
With only minor injuries, he was able to help others who were severely burnt and in terrible pain.
Russell was saved from the water, but he was badly hurt, bleeding heavily.
Mental impacts
For many years, Russell refused to talk about what happened that morning, describing it simply as “hell”.
His wife Elsa said, “When he opened up later on, he always mentioned the horror of it.”
Appreciating the title
4
Step
◆ After reading the whole passage, now how do you think of the title Are there any figures of speech in it
Russell described it as “hell”. Any topic related to the attack might awaken memories of his horrible experience. At the same time, metaphor is used here to make the description more powerful. The author compares the Pearl Harbor attack to “hell” to emphasize the devastation of the attack. At the same time, suspense is created, making the reader wonder what exactly happened at Pearl Harbor.
Further thinking
5
Step
◆ Why should we never forget the attack on Pearl Harbor
We should never forget the attack on Pearl Harbor because it is a reminder of the horror of war. Many lives are lost in wars. Families are torn apart and those who survive wars are often left with injuries to their bodies or their minds. The traumas of war make it difficult for them to live a normal life after experiencing things so frightening like bombs thundering, things being destroyed, and people struggling. Furthermore, the attack on Pearl Harbor should be a reminder that maintaining peace throughout the world is the only way this kind of tragedy would never happen again.
